If you are in the US you will need a plug in transformer to run the 220v pump: geni.us/1zn4
Good mesh bags for media: geni.us/FaWBt
FILTER MEDIA, FULL FILTER UPGRADE KITS OR INDIVIDUAL PARTS HERE: www.filterpro.c...
Frozen food: geni.us/LNA8 (select type - loads to choose from)
Since coming up with the 'internal moving bed filter' idea and posting videos on KZbin years ago I have been constantly working on new ideas for filters - some worked some didn't but this one is a great one.
Here's another filter idea from Pondguru but this one is aimed at people who breed fish, have fish houses or highly stocked tanks.
Much of the time those multi-tank scenarios rely on foam filters driven by air which can be very noisy and offer limited processing of nitrate so therefore require large regular water changes.
With this design I have managed to create a filter which aerates water silently and has adjustable bubble size.
It offers effective mechanical and biological filtration and will reduce not only ammonia and nitrite but also NITRATE as it uses Biohome Ultimate which supports aerobic and anaerobic bacteria better than any other media.
The filter is washable and you can customise it to offer chemical filtration with addition of carbon or set it to condition the water by swapping out some media for a peat ball if you want lower pH.
The whole outer tube of the filter will attract detritus, algae etc. so will feed fry and shrimps.
The materials necessary for making your own filter available from
ww.filterpro.co.uk

That's great to hear and thanks for the good feedback. For clarity and health of water it really helped me realise something I'd hoped to achieve for many years - still can't believe that manufacturers don't integrate this sort of pump which properly oxygenates the water into their internal filter designs.

I believe your filter is by far the best that I have seen. Your friend gave you the foundation to put it into a very good idea. I am having problems finding the white poly tubes here in Florida,USA I have also looked for the small pumps themselves and I cannot find them. I have plecos,shrimps and royal plecos that would benefit from your filter.

You may find the pumps from suppliers of hydroponics gear but the tubes are proving difficult to buy at anything less than 100 at a time and the damn companies won't send a sample out.

I noticed another benefit is that you when changing filter media or whatever inserts you like inside, you could do each side one at a time. This keeps at least 50% of all the beneficial bacteria in the filter ready to colonize the another half when brand new stuff is inserted. Love the idea.

Brilliant video. I made a canister filter for my turtle aquariums loosely based off of your model. I used 4" x 24" pvc pipe filled with media and sponge for filtration (I will add peat to the filter next cleaning). I used an external filter to draw the water from the tank, through the filtration, and back to the aquarium. Thanks for giving me a solid foundation to work with!

No worries, man. The principles of filtration are quite simple so I just love to throw them out there and enjoy it when people adopt some of it for their own filters. You'd be amazed how many of the big fish channels on KZbin still have no idea about the right way to set up a filter, lol

As the air is drawn in and chopped into tiny pieces thus forming various size bubbles I couldn't really think what else to call it but if you have a suggestion I would welcome it. Standard venturi on outlet of pump are simply air bubbles - one size only but this way they are chopped up. Better having shredded air in the tank than shredded paper or shredded wheat, lol

I have several videos lined up for over the next few weeks. Some of them will be diy filters, some are my own design and some are based on some you have done. Of course ill never make claim to anything that is not mine and will tag and mention you in any of the ones I use if yours. One of the videos however will be looking at the different medias available and I would be interested in some of your biohome media, where would I go about purchasing some please? I would only need small amounts for video purpose. Look forward to hearing back from you :)

Aye! I love this filter! I have a tank with large gold fish, red eared slider turtle, and a pleco... Yep, it's a constant chore to keep it clean. I believe when I add this with just the coarse, medium, and fine foams, it will handle keeping the water clear. The other two filters can then keep the water healthy. Thank you!

I made an invisible filter based on your past video. I could not find a plastic 'rock' from any store here in Canada. However, I found a big pirate ship, in two parts. I drilled tiny holes in the top, silicone pieces of acrylic to make 'chambers' that I filled with bio-balls and an airline rock+tube. Now they look like moss-covered sunken ship broken in two, that bubble constantly. In reality they combine to make a huge air powered bio-filter. I got pictures together, just need to make a video of it in action. I will package it up on KZbin and paste the link for it soon.

Foam filters are gold. Especially if your raising fry.The added fine aeration is gold as well for fry. One thing Id change with the design though. In the middle I put some pipe where the pump sits. Other wise the pump wont pull from the sides enough most of the water will come from the middle skipping all your filter media.

The polyester tube would simply block up first around the areas of most draw and would always move to the point of least resistance but that is a possibility, yes.

the one thing people still don't know to use especially cycling a tank with this that fluval clear max does nitrates, nitrites and phosphate removal for up to 80 gallons. this type filter is perfect for that and carbon with zeolite to remove ammonia and chlorine as well. really cool design and so simple for any one to add one of each of those media and the tank cycles in a 4 days rather then 5-8 because the nitrate and ammonia spikes are reduced or non existent.

No worries, the filter is in one of our tanks at work so I will do update videos as the materials for its construction become available. Until that point it is just a concept. I have no experience of planted tanks so I'm definitely not the one to offer any advice / judgement on that set-up. Although popularity is no measure of knowledge the main guy I can think of who would offer something useful on planted tanks would be 'Dustinsfishtanks' as he is all about the planted tanks and growing of plants. I have tried to contact him a few times without any replies but maybe you would have more joy. Maybe he doesn't like fat baldy Englishmen, lol

Pondguru's manufacture and design of the polyester media filter tube is very good. However, I am pondering the question of best practices in regard to integration of biologic media into the design ( post positive aeration ). However, while my experience with anaerobic activity has been mostly due to prolonged maintenance intervals and poor practices in regard to fluid flow, I will build and use this set -up as a nearly perfect cost effective (and adaptive) filter in my nano display. Thanks to pondguru.

If just using that pump, it's much quieter if you wrap foam around the water intakes and let it hang against the side of the tank (soaks up the vibrations) instead of using the suckers. Stops small fish getting sucked in too. Also find it makes a lot more very small bubbles (as well as the big ones) when the air intake is is fully open. But it's noisy fully open - the noise comes out of the air pipe. Cheers for the helpful videos mate.

Marion Illies No worries - I have 100 tubes arriving from China in next 2 weeks and also smaller tubes which will allow multiple filters to be joined together.

great video.. I do the same thing but I use a 2 litre soda bottle and sponges.. cheap.. and works awesome.. harbor freight has a good assortment of pumps. I use 2 800 gal per hour pumps on my 100 gallon tank. water is always clean. it's quite too..

Brilliant filter idea! The bit about changing the internal pieces to sort out whatever the need is makes it have some very widespread potential applications. Have you found a source for the tubes yet? It might be interesting to try this in my aquaponic garden ... Thanks for sharing with the community, I'll let you know if I give it a try!

I bought the 450 litre air pump just on the strength of this video. I've got a couple of common musk turtles and some white cloud mountain minnows in my 4' tank and the pump ensures there's plenty of oxygen in the water. I'm also running an external filter which does 1600 litres per hour and I'm thinking about improving it as per your other video.

As an extra for a turtle tank it will be a great supplement to your main filtration as water i turtle tanks can be very quickly de-oxygenated as they are such heavy polluters.

You should be careful with that kind of aeration. It works well and I like it. I even used to add a air hose line to the intake years ago. To the point to much fine air bubbles can give some fish Popeye in some fish. I only tested Goldfish but I suspect it could cause in some other fish as well. If you do run into that problem just go back to a regular air stone and the problem should resolve on its own. I do like the filter idea.

Where can I find a pump like this?? Seems like most of the pumps out there have an air intake at the water exit, while the pump here has an intake before the propellor...

You are a genius, I have been trying to improve on my current filter and all ideas are good, but not great, and usually end up with a bulky apparatus inside the tank of ouside of it that honestly looks stupid. I can generaly make this one to suite different tank sizes by adjusting the size of the tube and even the pump. Believe or not, there are smaller pumps out there that work on 12volts easily convertible to a 110/120v with a few transistors on the wall plug (not outlet)

Yes there's a world of little pumps out there just ready to experiment with, lol. If I had time I would be tinkering away all day every day but damn work gets in the way. Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos.

It can be driven with an air pump or water pump or a pump like the one in this video.

Might see what I can source for parts locally, but surely it's possible to make a unit where you don't need to remove the plug. Looking forward to trying it though.
@pondguru

Yes you don't need to cut off the plug - just pass the air line and cable through the pipe and out the ends. I was just trying to maximize cable length in the video.

Excellent!!! My idea is = you can make the polyester tube out of FELT. It comes in all kinds of thicknesses - just pick the thickness you want, and roll and sew to size.
@pondguru
@pondguru 10 жыл бұрын
Yes felt should work too. Hopefully I can get the ready made tubes as they fit these little pumps perfectly. Really looking forward to pulling the components together and offering people something they can customise for mechanical, biological, chemical or water conditioning or a combination of any of those as that flexibility is something I have been looking hard for. It would be a great shame if this never got beyond the concept stage. Thanks for watching and appreciating the videos, man.

This is a great little filter with unlimited potential. I do have a question though. How does it remove nitrate? I thought you needed an oxygen free enviroment to accomplish this.
@pondguru
@pondguru 10 жыл бұрын
Check out the videos about biohome media. Its structure supports both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria for effective processing of nitrates. Glad you enjoyed the video, man. I have one coming up on the internal (microscopic) views inside the biohome medias which may be of interest.

@pondguru how will this work for nitrates if you are passing air thru it? Don't the bacteria which convert nitrate to nitrogen need an oxygen depleted and low water flow environment?
@tworoelio
@tworoelio 5 жыл бұрын
Dawgz that’s correct ! This is just a fun diy mod but not the holy grail. Also all the dirt and bad bacteria’s will stay in the water. And this thing will clog up so fast that in the end it just works as a large medium filter.

@pondguru
@pondguru 7 жыл бұрын
For full cycle filtration (reduction in nitrate) a single filter would be fine for 50 litres - 100 litres. What that is in gallons depends if it is UK or US gallons. 1 US gallon = 3.8 litres 1 UK gallon = 4.54 litres

2 things I like about this filtr 1.it dosent use an external air pump so its very quiet and 2. it is fully submerged so it dosent cool the water by removeing it from the tank and then pumping it back in again.
