I may have missed this, but if you number the cabinet doors and cover with tape, then you are painting over that. Do you then remove the tape, install the door and then spot paint to cover the number in the end? Same with arrows on the drawer fronts. I've been putting the cabinet number where the hinge would go but you have it right in the middle.

Great tip. Put your hinges in small zip lock baggies and put the number on them. This way all screws and any other items ie rubber bumpers are all in the bag. You never loose anything unless you loose the whole bag. I put them in a cheap basket from the dollar store so not to misplace anything. I think I would have painted that brick white also to give that kitchen a brighter look.

I do occasionally (just not usually in video). The main reason you see me use certain tools on this channel is because I am trying to do everything with DIY methods. The channel is DIY Painting and I want it to all show methods that an average homeowner can do. If I pull out my $500 sander, $700 vacuum, and $2000 sprayer, that's not really DIY anymore, but Pro Painting Tips. Know what I mean?

Stumbled on this excellent video. Will you have your painting kit back in stock? I have a 1978 kitchen with gingerbreaded solid oak. My hubs loves to cook and wants easy-to-clean surfaces. Even said he preferred melamine laminate for ease of clean. I vote keeping oak, but promised I'd paint the cabinets with good strong paint.

Is it possible to use a roller for painting on the cabinets? I am doing this on a vintage camper and all the walls are wood grain. I've sanded everything down and vacuumed. Started applying the USG but its an insane amount of handheld brush work. Will a roller do the trick? Or will it not get into the grooves enough?
@diypainting7 ай бұрын
A roller can work great. Just thin the USG down a bit or it won't roll very well. make sure to work it in a bit too. A foam roller also works great for priming and top coating if you don't mind a little bit of texture (not bad though, just more than spraying).

Would you recommend thinning Cabinet Coat at 20% using a Graco True Coat 360 airless.

Great video! I know you didn't use Zinsser Smart Prime in this kitchen cupboard reno, but I seen you recommend it in another one of your videos as one of the best to prevent bleed through with original oak. I have been having that problem with other primers and wanted to try the Zinsser Smart Prime, but I can't seem to find it on Amazon or any local hardware stores. Does it no longer exist? My search keeps redirecting me to Zinsser 1-2-3 Bullseye. Does that have the same quality as the Smart Prime?
@diypainting7 ай бұрын
Zinsser 1-2-3 is fine, but I wouldn't use it. If you have a Sherwin close by, go and ask for Extreme Block Water Based Primer and use that. If you have any bleed through after that, my guess is it would only be small spots. If you have some spots, hit those with a spray can of Kilz Original. That's what I do and I don't have any issues.

Does the primer allow tannins to bleed?

Water based primers do tend to allow tannic acids to bleed through. So an oil or lacquer based primer may help or at least use one to hit bleed through spots.

Why don’t you use an orbital sander with a soft pad for curved edges to knock down the bulk and only hand sand where orbital can’t reach ?
@diypainting8 ай бұрын
Orbital tends to be too aggressive for this step imo. They can easily sand through finish, grain filler or primer way too easily. I prefer the control of hand sanding, but I have started using a 3x4 sander lately and found it to be a pretty good balance in between the orbital and hand sanding.

It is funny that this guy does not paint the inside of cabinets. I cannot think of a single house that I have lived in in my adult life that I did not painted inside of cabinets. Quite a few residents I painted the inside of the cabinets but left the outside of the cabinets alone. But then again we're in the Northeast US we're half of the year your 6 hours or so of good bright daylight is not that bright. There is nothing I hate more than trying to find something in the cabinet and it is so dark in that cabinet you can't see anything. Painting the inside of cabinets white is the fastest, cheapest, and easiest way to make it easier to see what you're looking for inside cabinets especially in houses that are on the darker side (like our current house that is blocked with a few windows to say all the rooms are on the dark side is an understatement)
@diypainting6 күн бұрын

Painting over Oak... not my taste.. I would of gone with sanding down to the bare wood and light stain to give it a mellow natural oak look.. white paint in a kitchen with gas stove.. is going to look like crap because natural gas stoves leaves residue on everything will get yellowed quick. Also, replace the counter top with a granite or quartz would of been more bang for the buck.
@diypainting6 күн бұрын
Modern water-based enamels, especially those made with acrylic or acrylic-urethane blends, are designed to resist yellowing. They do not rely on alkyd resins (like oil based enamels do), which are prone to oxidation and yellowing. Also, high-quality water-based enamels (like these) include UV-resistant components that help maintain color when exposed to sunlight. Also, if you're getting any cooking residue on your cabinets, you probably need better ventilation in your kitchen.

You spray the paint from the bottom-up because your brain has rationalized that it will be the path of least resistance for you, making it easier to finish off the area youre painting. whether or not that's true I don't know. but that's what your brain has likely figured out. You are obviously a detailed oriented person. The only reason I comment on this is because I do the exact same thing
