2 clarifications. #1 Dlc and such have “always” been eligible, this was just the first time they clarified that. #2 Game Direction is more of a “thing the studio tried and executed greatly that the industry can follow” vs GOTY being “the overall best package a game has from top to bottom”. There was a year RE7 got the Direction nom cuz it was a bold new take on the franchise they executed well, but not for GOTY cuz it’s overall package wasn’t as full as the rest.

Someone can think that FF7R is the best game that came out that year, while also thinking Dragon's Dogma is a better RPG game. Comparing a general GOTY and a specific type just comes off to me as someone who solely uses the categories to vote for which game they enjoyed the most, which I don't think will be happening a lot of the time. It's almost the complete opposite of what you did for the best family game. By your logic should've Astro Bot have been the winner of that category? Since Astro Bot was one of the GOTY nominees and Mario Party Jamboree isn't then shouldn't that mean that Astro Bot is better? That kind of thinking just comes off as stubborn and tunnelvisioned, not really looking at what the actual category is and just voting based on which one you think is better overall, which isn't the case for 90% of the categories. I think Fortnite is the best ongoing game, but do I think it's a better game than Helldiver 2 or Final Fantasy XIV? Not necessarily, but when voting for the best ongoing game, I vote for whichever game firs the bill the best. Fortnite (in my opinion at least) has the best "ongoing" aspect, whether I think the game is actually the best of the 5 is irrelevant because that's not what the category is about.

It’s not a whole new game. It still has the same mechanics and everything. It’s just an expansion of the game people already liked. They changed little to nothing about it, only added to it. It may have as much content as another game, but it’s not a new game. No matter what people say it’s a dlc that doesn’t actually change the game, it just adds to it, and you have to beat a massive chunk of the base game to even get to it. Sotet is a dlc not a new game regardless of what people think. That spot should have gone to something else

Honestly if a dlc is the same size as a normal game, I don’t mind its inclusion, but I do agree it should’ve been in its own category instead. We are in a period in time where companies keep adding content to their main games, sometimes it’s so they don’t have to make an entirely new game, but most of the time it’s because of the “games as a service” stuff that games like Fortnite ended up popularizing. Why risk making a new game when you can just use the same engine to make new content for less cost? I don’t mind dlc that adds significant amounts of content to a game I already like, it’s when the dlc gets lazy that I have issues with. 😅

DLC has always been eligible, even in categories that specify "game". This isn't really a new thing, it's just new that a DLC has had the critical reception and public hype that it would need to compete with the best full game releases of the year.

The Elden Ring DLC s basically a full-fat expansion pack, which is what these proper full DLC releases were known as back in the day, it's a real shame they aren't released as standalone physical releases any more, expansion packs were often bigger & better, than the OG game.

Honestly Metaphor is WAYYY better than what you giving it credit for. Just finished it yesterday, And yeah it's far and away my GOTY. Music, Art Direction, Narrative, I could go on, Maybe I'm just biased cause i LOVE Persona games, But yeah i was blown away with Metaphor, I hope it wins but sadly I don't see that happening.

Wish you'd do your research. DLC hasn't suddenly been allowed, it was always allowed. Witcher 3 DLC won over DS3 when it came out. The rules weren't changed, they just clarified the rules that were already in place. It's hard to take you seriously when you can't do a shred of research.

There are 2 extremely easy solutions to this issue. The first is make an entire separate category for DLC that can't be nominated anywhere else, and the second is to make it so that any games nominated for GOTY cannot be nominated for any other category. That literally solves everything

I could be absolutely wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure that DLC could've always been included, it was just never considered before because DLC's by nature are less popular than the game they're attached too, Shadow of the Erdtree is not only a massive DLC, but it's also the DLC a game that A) already won GOTY and B) sparked a massive amount of people to not only get the 40$ expansion, but also brought in MORE people to both the base game and DLC, the reason I think it was "added" was to make it more clear that they were including it and why I could absolutely be wrong about my theory, the people upstairs could just think Eldenring is game of the century, but this isn't the first time I've heard about DLC technically being considered even though it never has been before, and if any DLC should be considered for GOTY, Shadow of the Erdtree definitely takes that title

@primateboogaloo overall 2024 wasn't a good year for new games. EOW was an 8/10 and PoP Lost Crown was a 9.5/10 for me, but when the rest of the games this year are like 7.5 quality, they default to the top due to weaker competition.

Nah fam, Elden Ring Shadows of the Erdtree is a game by itself. They raised the bar on gaming with Elden Ring, and Raised the bar on dlc so high that many see it as a separate game. The bar had been dropping for years and Elden Ring raised it so high, it got other games looking different. The other developers NEED to up their game if they are threatened by an amazing game's dlc thats so big it qualify for what others call a full size game. Other companies would have taken Shadows and make it a full game sequel with minor fluff to say its a worthy sequel, but not Fromsoft...this time. Scared at the prospect of them being bought out by proxy. If Sony does, its over.

Personally, I think FF7 Rebirth got way too much hype, but this is also coming from someone who loves the OG and feels slightly after the second installment of their Remake series is now only on PS5 instead of PS4, which the console I own and refuse to purchase another Sony device after terrible customer service assistance. There is more to it, but that didn't help my desire to give Sony another chance with my wallet. XD I also don't find realistic graphics = great game design, BUT, I've always been more for animation that isn't heavily CGI but traditional line work, which ATLUS has always been better at implementing, which is why I prefer Metaphor. Either way, the only game I actually played in this entire list, was Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, so my vote isn't much. XD
