Wait, you forgot to mention Balatro when you were talking about this year's GOTY contenders. It really stands out to me because it is one of the only games nominated for Game of the Year that doesn't have any narrative elements at all, and is there solely on the strength of its deceptively simple yet adictive game loop. It is cool to see a game devoid of all the bells and whistles that we kinda expect of modern video games competing for the top spot against juggernauts with budgets millions of times its size. That said, Metaphor Refantazio is my actual game of the year pick. As a big JRPG fan, it is very exciting to see two nominated this year, and Metaphor in particular delivers just about everything I want from a game like this. All the while expanding on ideas and mechanics of past ATLUS games in ways that are simultaneously familiar yet refreshingly new. Though, it is worth mentioning I was still playing rounds of Balatro between long play sessions of Metaphor.

I'm more of a souls guy, but I really respect TLOU2 in alot of ways. You can literally forget about the story th e characters and just focus on the technical and gameplay aspects and its a masterpiece. Even down to the controls. Like I thought call of duty had good analog aiming mechanics. Now, I appreciate how dark and brutal the story is, but I get the push back. I just don't think all that is a big deal because of how impressive the gameplay and technical aspects of the game is. That said. Baldurs gate 3 is even MORE IMPRESSIVE. THE AMOUNT OF CHOICE IN GAMEPLAY IS RIDICULOUS. It's like turn based deus ex. Just wanted to highlight those two games. Elden ring and sekiro obviously rule.

As someone who has been a Dragon Age fan since 2015, I want to give a bit of a heads up for Veilguard-- it looks pretty but it lacks the depth, conflict and good writing that the previous Dragon Age games had. It's basically an action adventure game masquerading as an RPG/Dragon Age game-- previous choices from other games do not import to Veilguard (save for 3 from DAI), the approval/disapproval system only adds XP to the companions, the game is more fast paced with limited pausing and little strategy and the writing is incredibly "evil vs good", weirdly modern and soft. It's a shame because Origins, 2 and Inquisition are such solid games in their own ways, but Veilguard fell flat for a looot of people. If you want to play a goody two shoes character in a game with action gameplay and you don't care much for the deep lore, it'll be fun. Otherwise... yeah, needless to say myself and many others are disappointed. And no, it definitely would not have deserved GOTY, and I'm not surprised it only got one nomination. Anyways, sorry for the tirade but wanted to give a disclaimer to any new Dragon Age fans such as yourself ! Feel free to ask questions if you have any. I had tried a few souls games before elden ring but never could get into them. I didnt like having to grind the same area over and over when i was too underleveled. Elden ring was the first fame ive ever played to NG+ 9 (i think 7 is thr max but i beat it 8 times on my ps4 and then bought it again and beat it on ps5 to prepare for the dlc). It blew my mind how amazing that game was I loved it so much that now im a huge solsborne/ soulslike fanboy. Lies of p, lords of the fallen, demon souls, etc. i try to play souls games whenever i get the chance and all because of elden ring. The open world mechanic is perfect for a souls game. If something is tok hard then id just go try to find new weapons, armor, spells, etc. somewhere else or just find a new place to grind. Its wild that the game made me love the genre so much that i dont mind grinding the same enemies over and over in other souls games now (the exact reason i was initially turned off from them). Once i got a taste of what it feels like tk overcome an area or a boss in souls games, i was hooked. It deserves game of the decade imho (this is coming from someone whos favorite game series is zelda anf still thinks elden ring blows breath and tears out of the water... Although those are a close second.... Kinda ironic considering i believe zelda heavily inspired dark souls) Ok enough of my elden ring rant. Lets finish watching the video now lol

For my goty this year i picked black myth wukong. That game was amazing. From the epic intro that blew me away, to the jaw dropping secret ending, the game felt perfect to me. In my comment about soulsborne/ soulslike i didnt say this game because wukong feels like a perfect mesh of many genres. I agree that elden ring shouldnt of won this year. There should be a dlc award (maybe there is and i just cant remember lol). I do however think it drserved a nomination ( yea blabla somenother games didnt get nominated because of it bla bla) but elden rings dlc sends a message to the world (just like the base game and balders gate 3): this is what games can be when a studio gives it 100% on all fronts. No wonder so many other studios hated on those two games because they inadvertently called them out dor their bullshit. From a gaming standpoint i dont think shadow of the erdtree deserved goty because it just felt too empty compared to the base game to me. I knwo it was huge but in the base game u could drop a pin anywhere, go there and boom! You will find something to do or explore that you werent expecting or looking for. The dlc had way to many moments where id be exploring with nothing to find. Let me be clear though, this is only IN COMPARISON to the base game. Compared to the majority of video games elden ring dlc is double or more than many odher games Also thr fact that you cant playnit without sinking an enormous anout of time into the base game feels like it shoildnt be considered a game of thr year though my argumrnt still stands i believe it deserved to be nominated because of the statement it makes on the contemporary gaming industry lol

The Veilguard is pretty good imo, the user reviews across Steam, PlayStation and Xbox are positive, but it's not as good as Origins or Inquisition and the characters aren't as good as 2
@SpongeDidTheMath8 күн бұрын
That's good to hear, I figured the backlash for Veilguard was more just degens on Twitter being mad for whatever reason. I talked to a friend recently about her experiences with Inquisition and she also loves it, but feels the Veilguard is getting too much hate for what it is. It's a bit more "accessible" (for lack of a better word) than previous titles, but still very good. Her words. Thanks for the input! :D
@anthonysmurthwaite62588 күн бұрын
@@SpongeDidTheMath the game isn't perfect but 99% of the hate is coming from people who never played a Dragon Age game, and I knew this game was going to get tons of hate even if literally everyone who played it thought it was a masterpiece because before release it was already getting tons of hate for everything from the option to have top surgery scars to there being possible gay relationships even though Bioware included gay romance options long before it was socially common for media to acknowledge same sex relationships without prejudice
@anthonysmurthwaite62588 күн бұрын
@@SpongeDidTheMath people will point to the meta critic user score as "proof" the game is hated, but you don't need to have even seen gameplay to submit a user review on metacritic so controversial games will never have accurate user scores on metacritic, the user reviews on Steam, PlayStation and Xbox are much better at showing opinions for paid games

Breath of the Wild certainly deserves all the awards it has gotten... but for me the openness, lack of poper dungeons, and just overall straying from the classic Zelda formular, killed the franchise for me. And now even the 2D games are dying with Echoes of Wisdom abandoning tight puzzle-design in favor of the shitty BotW-style of "multiple solutions" and "everthing works on everything". I mean, when the solution to reach another ledge is to make a bridge out of beds... I know the game isn't taking itself serious anymore, and that saddens me. Yes, I hate fun.

😅 i have an issue with souls games People who suck at it aren't having skill issue it's just hard for them to remember the memory based game mechanics I think a lot of new players to the gaming world never actually played something requiring actual skill For example people who play shooters especially Pubg steam FIFA games and whatever other games that actually require you to learn how to do difficult button inputs or learn a certain timings in game to do a special movement or action actually outsmarting an enemy Souls bourne games aren't skill based it has very minimal action inputs it's easy to get into the difficulty for some myself i don't see it difficult is the timing of dodging and hitting the combat is of so little variety it's quite baffling people find it hard the stamina bar is all what matters to center your attention on when you do it's a pathetic game to play Imo i think gamers are starting to lose critical thinking in their preference and play style it's quite sad

as much as i like Breath of the wild , being an old school gamer that grew up[ on classic zelda games , i found mysef not quite fuly satisfied with BotW. cetain thing about it eft me wanting od zelda . first off the weapon breaking mechanic was more annoying to me than any thing. even the master sword broke and required you to give it "rest" all the time. alsot eh puzle dungeons whie fun eft me wanting classic Zelda maxe dungeon crawls like the od days . I Still ahve yet to get to tears of the kingdom because it folows some of these same mechanics and i got so many other games i'm playing at the moment i jsut haven't had time for it.

Honestly, that's a very valid opinion. While I did love Skyrim my FIRST time playing, I couldn't play it again. I tried twice and just found the experience too linear. I've met people who have 1000+ hours in it and I'm blown away at how LOL

@ I also feel the same way about Skyrim, but not because it’s boring, it’s just outdated, sure the game was revolutionising at the time, but as games evolved it’s not that unique now. And about the “TikTok effect”, I’ve uninstalled it long ago cause of the reason you said, and I can play longer games now and still have fun, I had a blast with death stranding for example, times have changed pops.
