Ehh he didn't really want to kill Maliketh. It was more of a last desperate fail-safe. Giving Rykard the Blasphemous Shards was a solid idea in theory since it would stave off Destined Death, and Rykard was otherwise immortal. The theory falls apart when you realize that he has no shot in hell at beating Maliketh even without Destined Death.

Marika ordered maliketh to steal the rune of death from the gloam eyed queen and the godskins to get rid of death in the lands between, she gave it to maliketh to protect it, a piece of it was stolen and used to kill godwyn, maliketh fused the rune of death into his body to prevent it from being stolen ever again, this caused his hunger for deathroot. So no, Marika did not trick him in any way. Still tho, must suck to be maliketh

Tbh I always figured that Maliketh actually was responsible for Marika's "death" in the past. A shadow is forced to kill their Empyrean should they disobey their fate; Marika attempted to shatter the Elden Ring, and we find her impaled on a red fragment of light similar to the Rune of Death in appearance, her body seemingly without a trace of life until Radagon takes over.

@@notsocrazytank707 From what I gather, Radagon and Marika aren't the same person, despite they forcibly conjoined themselves into one body. Similar to D and his "brother," they were born of different origins, but share one soul, which is what destines them to converge. While Marika was married to Godfrey, Radagon was in Liurnia with Rennala. It wasn't until Godfrey's exile that Radagon departed to join Marika in the capital. Radagon is also a descendant of the Fire Monks, natives of the Lands Between, despite Marika is a Numen from outside. As Melina recites of Marika's spoken echoes, Radagon had "yet to become a god," and was "yet to become [Marika]." Furthermore, Goldmask's final discovery was that Radagon and Marika, though they comprised one god, still possessed two minds with two ideals, which is what generates the instability of the Golden Order that Goldmask hoped to eradicate with Perfect Order. As we know from Blaidd's corruption, shadows are forced to slay their Empyrean should they disobey the Greater Will. Marika's attempt to shatter the Elden Ring is obviously a pretty bold move against her role as a god, so it makes sense that Maliketh, the wielder of Destined Death, would be the one to kill her. Perhaps that was part of her plan, though, and why she fused with Radagon in the first place... So yeah, Marika is functionally dead, I'd say, but Radagon survives to act as a god in her stead.

@@shawnwilcowski In lore, Maliketh defeated the Gloam-Eyed Queen in order to remove Destined Death from the Elden Ring, marking the foundation of the Golden Order. Since Death is antithetical to Marika and Eternity, I find it likely that Maliketh remained isolated in Farum Azula ever since, keeping Destined Death far away from the Erdtree. It wasn't until Ranni stole a fragment that Deathblight appeared on the mainland, and Maliketh moved to Caelid under the guise of Gurranq, the Beast Clergyman. That said, I agree he probably harbors some guilt for Marika's death-much like Blaidd when he laments being abandoned by Ranni in her anticipation of him being forced by the Two Fingers to turn on her.

What's really cool about playing as Maliketh is his movement looks really fun to play as. To the point that I could see there being a super high level spell where you turn into Maliketh for say 10 seconds or something. A lot of the "play as the boss" hacks are pretty boring because their attacks are OP and their movement is very limited because they weren't designed to be player controlled.
