The thing with the hats and the statues is probably based on a japanese short story were an old man who usually sells strawhats in town. One day when he couldn't sell them he encountered several statues on his way home. He gave his hats to the statues, including the one hat he wore himself. The following night the statues gave him and his wive a reward.

Playing this without a guide would be miserable. It is the classic "talk to everyone over and over until you find the sequence of conversations that triggers something important". It took his 7 hours to beat it while knowing EXACTLY where to go. It would probably take 3x that or more to do blind even if you could read the text

What an interesting and obscure game! By the way, each of the characters does have a name but likely the translator doesn't know/mistranslates those sections so here they are based on the order you showed them. little girl: 春朝今日子 (shunchou kyouko) "younger sister" (妹) straw hat kid: 春朝二郎 (shunchou jirou). "younger brother" (弟) backwards hat: 春朝一郎 (shunchou ichirou). "older brother" (兄) bike girl: 春朝真理子 (shunchou mariko). "older sister" (姉) mom: 春朝敏子 (shunchou toshiko*) "mother" (母) *the reading of 敏子 can actually be several things including satoko, hayako, haruko, and others. dad: 春朝秀男 (shunchou hideo) "father" (父) Anyway it's no big deal but it is interesting that these characters have "canon" names. By the way fun fact, in the old days male children would often be named by the order of their birth, so like 一郎 means "first son" and 二郎 "second son". these days it's not as commonly adhered to, but yeah oh and btw the ナミテントウ (namitentou) is a kind of ladybug. tentou is the word broadly used for ladybugs. if you've seen digimon as a kid, tentomon is named because they look like a ladybug.

The reason why this game was harder than just translating text is because it is flooded with cultural references. A Japanese person would know to give straw hats to the kappa statues because… well, that’s a story that everyone knows. A straw hat seller that traveled outside of town and unfortunately couldn’t make any sales. Even though he was poor, he still gave his unsold hats to some statues on the road, statues that represented gods and were in the middle of nowhere. This act of kindness was rewarded, but tbh I don’t remember the tale that well, but it’s something along those lines. The main plot of a catfish causing an earthquake is probably another one of those tales that they know. If anyone played Monster Hunter Tri, the plot is a coast village that is suffering from regular earthquakes, and eventually one of the monsters that you take down is Gobul, kind of an anglerfish mixed with a pufferfish mixed with a catfish kinda monster. They’re not the actual cause of the earthquakes, and they’re not actually a catfish like in this N64 game, but I find it too similar to be just a coincidence. Anyways, good thing there was a guide, because these kind of things are extremely difficult and you’d probably need an actual Japanese person helping with understanding that stuff. Cultural stuff
