how did you equip a shield when going up against the blazes? you can equip it by shift clicking to automatically place in offhand but you cant use the shift key you also cant access the regular inventory screen because that requires pressing the inventory key, and its not accessible through chest or crafting table menus you also are not allowed to put it into the offhand using the F key edit: i watched the video on twitch and saw that he used a dispenser to equip it like with armor
