Oh, to have Jordan Peterson as a therapist! I am confident he could show me a path forward out of the depressive pit I know so well. His analysis of situations are always so dead on, or at least the ones that speak to my own experiences. I think he could fix me in one go. 😂 I sure love this man. Actually, both of these men are a delight to listen to. Now I just need to listen to this again, take notes, and figure out a game plan to become that better, future me. ❤

The "danger of hope" is precisely why it's better to underpromise and overdeliver than vice versa. The pain of disappointment is far greater than the surprise of exceeding expectations.

Well said, I wonder if your can apply this equation to the opposite sphere of emotion, such as negativity. In a situation that'll likely cause you difficulty, with a little bit of anxiety and fear. Perhaps you should overestimate the challenge you're going into and then it'll turn out not as bad as you think. Therefore the pleasures of finding out it's not as bad is greater than the feeling of fear of the situation you expected.

You've misunderstood "hope". JP isn't referring hope as if one hopes for a magical outcome outside of our control. He meant it the correct way which is to undertake a task or a challenge in hopes of culminating the task set before you. Again dopamine is the pursuit, the appetite not "hopes for gratification". There is no danger to hope to better ourselves.

Definitely something ive had to acknowledge and work on. I would often visualise and anticipate how a social event would go to get the motivation to do it, only to feel depressed and underwhelmed during/after because it didnt go as i had expected. The overwhelm of putting mysepf out of my comfort zone and feeling that it was "for nothing" spiralled me mentally. Its extremely hard now to go into things "blindly" (needing control but accepting i dont actually have it) and be ok with whatever does/doesnt happen. There is an inherent need for that dopamine hit of "i actually enjoyed myself" -to often find it doesnt come to fruition, is one of the hardest tests/lessons of life im struggling to accept. Its hard to not feel that sense of "i cant enjoy anything in life - with or without hope attached".

So focusing on a specific situation where can improve, in looking at minimum issue of problem that you are facing. Point made in how to help make a case for yourself - even if you are making depressive reactions to setbacks that are creating problems in having the resilience to move forward. Really profound implications for moving forward in a constructive and healthy way.

Dopamine is supposed to be linked to pleasure, anticipation and addiction. I begin to think that it's nice, maybe somewhat necessary but also short acting. Serotonin gets my attention since it seems related to deeper changes like satisfaction, winning and status. I get a Dopamine spike if I eat sugar which I try to avoid, I don't want my life to be joyless but addiction is destructive. My serotonin rises after a heavy workout and I feel that I have achieved something. Success makes me happy but also esteem and self promotion. Does that make sense?

If you have kids, you know you shouldn't get their hopes up. Also, any sort of reward should not be given constant nor not at all. It should be random, i.e., good behavior at dinner out or a store, reward randomly. It helps to create civil behavior. IMHO.

So in order to beat self doubt, you must need to learn the proper way of handling failures and mistakes. You need to regain your sense of self. For me, the proper way is to trace back the roots of the problem and create future selves that corrects or avoid the roots that caused the failure or mistake in the first place. In simple explanation, learn from your failures.

JP IS BASICALLY MAKING THE CASE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A PERSONA THAT REVOLVES AROUND ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR THAT WILL EVENTUALLY CONSUME AND hurt the physical body so the dopaminergic system itself is not to blame but rather the reinforcing psychosocial structures that reinforce the destructive behavior. One must learn to self observe the thread that goes far back to the very creation of that compulsive behavior to reposition yourself in a TODAY of working on yourself by using your dopaminergic system in a healthy way which Huberman and Lempke have ample information on the techniques to do so. That will help create the needed distance for you to help you observe the difference and help you disconnect from the old self destructive patterns more easily. All the best!

my whole wide entire life, it’s like, I go in “spurts”. Spurts of beating self doubt followed by spurts of depression and stuff. Adhd, addictions, albeit low level. But still debilitating. Maybe per my adhd, still haven’t found the silver bullet to overcoming spurts of depression and self doubt. But I also know I have overcome it at times. So, my nee strategy is telling myself over and over as often as possible..”catch myself. stop. start over again” it works some of time😅. I’ve basically concluded it will always be a struggle and maybe that’s not ok.. but it’s not not ok either😂. Stop! Start over again. And I pray in Jesus name more and more hopefully also. Also. I quit all my adhd Vyvanse and meds and stuff. I decided that, maybe adhd drugs weren’t helping my other addiction issues…

So essentially, the anticipation and the excitement of a goal for example is where your dopamine rises and your anatomical system subconsciously takes that goal as a reward so it’s sealed that if you don’t hit that Goal , there will be deep disappointment where as if you didn’t put so much emphasis on the goal , there wouldn’t be such a drastic drop in dopamine . I guess you could say it’s better to not over estimate your abilities, don’t give it power , and that can be said with anything.

The information is incredible, but I think Dr.Jordan B Peterson should try to use the Feynman technique to explain things, this is explaining things as if you are talking with a 5 year old, this would help everyone to understand better what it is said. I find it very difficult as a non native speaker to understand everything of the conversation that I know is very interesting.

ATTENTION: BOYCOTT AND REPORT THIS USER Stop impersonating Dr. Peterson with this page that uses the exact same profile picture Dr. Peterson uses. I’ve reported you to KZbin, writing therein: This user should be banned from copying and using the same “profile image” that the real Jordan Peterson account uses; it’s a form of deception, impersonating someone famous. I myself took many weeks or months to recognize that I was watching 2 separate channels. User adds links to real JP “socials”

Truth is a good strategy because truth gives correct data, even if that data is oops I made a mistake there because it would be known and corrected. Gee these 2 inspire me when they get together and have open conversations like this it’s an incredible flow. Thankyou for having your hearts on and having this wise helpful useful conversation. Like perfect example of how we all would all be able to sort out our problems differences ideas and the like and get somewhere useful as a result or at the very least having appreciation and insight feeling good from relating to one another. Can’t thank you enough guys. Priceless insights once again.

It's funny realizing the discussion is valid by having meaning given by every individual that has trouble getting under or over, till it becomes void of meaning, when you accept that through middle get's you past "it" .Sinners debating about how others sinners sin wrong.(wrong=distructively than we should, afford physically/mentally) .#just StartDoingSomething

Post partum has many more hormones involved besides dopamine. If the mother is allowed to bond and breasfeeds there will be far less chance of post partum. The breastfeeding releases oxytocin, and it is calming and nurturing.

The backlash, deserved or not, against the DW is real and growing. I hope you are given, and that you take, this opportunity to draw out the reasonable direction towards a solution to the dire position we as conservatives are now in. I've been conservative for 35 years, so my principals are hardened and I've been out of the desert of liberalism for most of my life. The newcomers that you, Ben, Drew, and Mike have given hope to are not as steadfast in their understanding or as thorough in their beliefs. I pray you're able to remain a lamp, the guiding light of peace and love and compassion and kindness that you have been for these people. In the name of The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit I pray Amen
