There is another side to this that I see isn’t being talked about. 87 year old male. Battled and won two rounds of cancer. Extremely low pain tolerance. Suffering from back pain for a year before discovering bone cancer. He chooses to end his life to avoid any more pain and suffering let alone the suffering of his loved ones watching him in this state and not be able to help him. He goes through conversations with his doctors regarding his prognosis and long term care needed and also discussed the pain and the suffering and sometimes people have just had enough. You must be of sound mind to make this decision. If all you have left to live for is chemo and radiation and surgeries at that age just to prolong a life that he feels personally is not worth living. To him that is not living. Sure, he could take matters into his own hands and end his life by performing his own suicide but look what that does to the people left behind? At least he had control over the when and where and who can be present. And to those loved ones of his who didn’t understand what this man had gone through and would end up going through, he was able to pacify them with his knowledge and understanding. MAID may not be a perfect ending but sometimes it’s the best option for those who choose it.
