Great stuff!! I wish I would've spent my 20s doing these things. I was an alcoholic and have been sober for nearly 3 years now. My 40s is my decade. I started sailing lesson in San Diego last year...never too late! Keep up the good work!

In the boating world, they have a name for what you are suffering from in regards to wanting just a little more room. It's called "2 ft'itis". It infects the best of us and I'm not sure if there is any permanent cure. The only thing that keeps it under control is the check book. Good luck and thanks for wearing the vest.

Sam, I love your attitude! I left NY at 18 and became proficient in many new things, traveled and lived in many places. At 61, I don't regret a minute of it. Now, I own a 50' motor yacht (dive charters in Okinawa) but although I did the ASA sailing courses, sailing is a little tougher on ones body than motor boating. So I'll sail vicariously around the world through young people like you, but I also get to chill on my motor boat. There is nothing like being on the water, but also nothing like living your dreams, and not living the way others prescribe them for you. If you decide to visit Okinawa, let us know. Plenty of Americans (military) here who would shake your hand.

I solo-sailed a 23' Sea Sprite on Long Island for several years, including several excursions out onto the Atlantic so I'm quite familiar with small boat sailing. I know how exhausting it can be because you get to go through every top and bottom of each wave. Watching your vlogs is eerie in the way that I can completely identify with everything you do, including weighing and setting anchor using sail only, or trying to keep your tacks to a minimum. I found my exhaustion limit was between seven to ten hours depending on the type of sailing. If you identified your make of boat I missed it, so please reshare. Also, if you could do a vlog where you list all the tips and tricks that you've learned I think your viewers would enjoy that. The last thing, when I considered trading up in size I looked long and hard at a 32' Contessa. Lots to recommend that boat but you can do your own research. Keep the videos coming.

Btw long form rules the day, ppl want every second of this. That dude that kayaked out in Molokai cove, exactly what happened to the British I’m sure, or anyone sailing up for that matter hundreds of years ago. They say the Chinese sailed 10k years ago west, around India, all the way to Southern Africa, every port they showed locals with gifts and love and showed no aggression or weapons of any kind, they were welcomed at every port, until they arrived at modern day Somalia, where the Europeans had come with hostility before them...you can prob guess what happened to the peaceful Chinese explorers there. Can’t live without this channel now! So awesome.

hey amigo, i just found your channel and i'm super stoked for you...sailing across the pacific on a hunter 23 is real adventure. hawaii is a difficult place to sail. i lived there for 11 years until finding a ketch in sausalito and sailing to mexico, where i live now...mexico is so much like hawaii WAS, and the sailing is wonderful...consistent winds from 10-20 almost all the time in the banderas bay, and wonderful lifestyle...no huge seas and 40 knot winds, and NO SUCH THING as paying 60$ to ANCHOR! fucking maui...hahaha.. i have one piece of advice...be very careful about with your anchor rode...i nearly chafed through mine once...it easily gets trapped under rocks or coral when the wind dies, and then snags when the wind picks up. if i were you, i would attempt to anchor as shallow as possible, in order to have as little rode on the bottom as possible. best thing is to have at least 60 feet of chain on a boat that size...that way you can anchor in 20 feet, let out all the chain and just a enough rode for the chain to clear the boat, giving you a nearly all chain scope with the benefit of a 'snubber' rode. there are a lot of great, 'small' boats under 30 feet. old cal jensens are a great value...old pearson 'triton' 28...contessa...for sailing in strong seas, i would stay away from more modern boats, like hunters, catalinas, columbias, and the many boats built for 'light' duty. truth is, after what you have accomplished, most boats any bit larger will seem like luxury cruisers...hahahaha...but when the wind and seas get up, it's the scantlings that matter...and the maintenance. until you have seen a main sheet track torn off the boat with the sound of a bomb exploding, you may not grasp the actual value, and importance, of the quality and size of each bit that holds a boat together. cheaply made plastic boats often find the decks ripped from the hulls in heavy seas!! who cares about the 'space' below on those days?? hahaha anyway...good luck amigo. i look forward to following your adventures, and becoming a supporter of yours.

Just one foot bigger than the Vega but much heavier and stable, very safe boat. Try to find a Vega, they usually sell cheap and they are great boats for what you need.

Fishing - if you're moving along, maybe 5 knots or so, try a lure that dives down (Rapala makes some good ones that look like sardines), or if you're going a bit slower maybe a 'spoon' lure - they are shiny and spin around. Anything you can troll behind you should do the trick, and if you use a diving lure or a spoon, it will stay below the surface (where birds won't likely snag it).

Enjoying the heck out of your sailing, Sam. Think about putting on at least one fin before jumping off of the boat! There are wicked currents there, as you are discovering. I know they would haul me out to sea. Keep on adventuring! Love your gadgets, too. Hope you don't lose anymore overboard, or off of surfboards. Don't worry about the flack from the fishing public. Sailing is what TransPac is all about. No need to harm the birds or the fish. Tackle and gear occupies valuable space on your boat. Better off provisioning meals you can cook up (or not) on your cooker. Keep living my adventure for me! Thanks!
