I have read both the short version & the long version reviewed here. Both are brilliant but the long version is the one to go for. Simply put: BEST BOOK EVER. All of Mark's books are the best Beatle books, starting with The Beatles Live! in 1986 and coming up to today. I met him at the Liverpool convention in1989 & took his photo holding "Recording Sessions" which at that time was the best Beatle book ever. Can't wait for Vol 2.

Good post, Andrew. I have the shorter version, and this was my spring/summer read during lockdown. I spent many an happy hour lost in the story whilst reading this in my back garden a few months ago, and I was gutted when I made it to the end. So much so that I'm now thinking of buying the larger version and starting all over again. Looking forward to the second (and third) volumes so much now, so I just hope (from a selfish point of view) Mr Lewisohn stays fit and healthy.....!!!

very nice review of the best Beatles Book and as you said a must have for every Beatles fan. I purchased the full set in Liverpool in 2014 and read them fairly quickly as the more you read the more your wanted to find out more and more. I saw Mark browsing in the Adelphi Hotel at Beatles week there and I was too shy to talk to him but wish I did. I as you, can not wait for Volume 2 !

I’ve read the extended version twice. I am so excited for vol. 2 which he has hopefully begun writing. It is now 10 years later and there is no indication when it will be published. I really hope there is an extended edition for vol. 2. My era as an American fan begins in November 1963 so vol 2 will cover the Beatles from January 1963 probably through the end of 1966. As the Kinks sang, ‘so tired of waiting…”

I bought the full book in 2 separate parts to read on kindle reader/tablet. One with kindle and other part with Google equivalent. The best Beatles book(s) by far that I've ever read. You get to know them in a way I never did before. And you see some characters in depth that weren't really in the foreground before (like Ringo's fearsome mum! ).

I bought the expanded edition a couple of years ago and since then I've been reading it. What a wonderful journey into pre-Beatles history! Tried to compare the full version with the shortened one - no way I'd choose the second for my reading: too much precious information is simply thrown out. If you are interested in such a work, go and find the expanded edition, it’s great 👍

I picked up the abridged paperback version a few weeks ago, and am about 180 pages in right now, which puts me in mid-1958. It's a great book, but I am glad I got the shorter version. There is plenty of detail there, and important contextual information about their environment and influences, but if Ringo doesn't see that drum in the window until 300 pages into the expanded version, I think I might have lost interest by that point.

Great Video, the extended version is for sure on my list. Thanks for the advice! Just recieved the Uncut magazine with Paul. Looks like an interesting interview with Paul, I will read this evening. I would have asked him: You have said that in the 70''s there where a couple of times when 3 of the former Beatles members actually where positive to a reunion, but it always ended with one who said no. Can you tell us about one of these concrete situations and who said no? ( I suspect that could have been George). Also I would have asked Paul if he could disclose any information about future releases in the archive series.

There are often one or two footnotes on each page, So over the course of 1500 pages that's a heck of a lot of extra information to show at the end of the book! Do I mean footnotes? Great video mate. I've had both versions of this book, starting with the abridged version. While they are both excellent, the mass of info in the two volume extended set is mind blowing. I think as you say, there are many good Beatle books out there; including the two of Mark's you mentioned. I throughly enjoyed "A Twist Of Lennon" by John's first wife Cynthia. It gave an insight into the formative years and a glimpse from the eye of the hurricane that was Beatlemania. "Pre Fab" by Colin Hanton is also enjoyable. With anecdotes from the early Quarrymen days, the morphing from Skiffle to Rock'n'roll; the first recordings etc.. Here's hoping that Mr. Lewisohn delivers us part 2 in the near future. I certain knew some guys who were Merseybeat peers of The Beatles from back in the day, who sadly have passed away in the interim between the first volume and the present. I know those lads were hoping to read the whole series before the great gig in the sky. Talking of which, two books by Manfred Kuhlmann "Beat Water Cross The Mersey" and "Some Other Guys" are great books showing the other bands of Merseybeat and how big that scene was. They've accompanying 5 C D collection too, with home demos, private recordings, failed audition recordings etc.. Worth a look at the unique melting pot The Beatles didn't invent, but were born from. Cheers Andrew

Hi Andrew thanks for the video I have not read the book however I do have some questions. Being that Mark was so much associated with The Beatles aside from his research. Do you feel he was being objective in his presentation of The Beatles? What I’m trying to say here is does he show the bad with the good or are The Beatles portrayed in a positive way through out? Would the surviving Beatles as well as Olivia and now Sean approve of a biopic based on Mark’s research in the way of the biopics “”Ray” and “Walk the Line” where they showed the ups and downs; drug use and legal troubles?

Not everyone seems to agree with me, but I really love the narrator of the audiobook, based on the shorter of the two print books. His voices for each of the six main characters (Martin, Epstein and the 4) are easy to recognize. I've listened to it several times and I also have the extended edition in print but I still haven't gotten a feel for exactly what's missing. The way I've been using the extended edition is to keep the 2nd part open to the index, and to keep Chronicle open to the page with every tune the Beatles played live. As I go through each song and cover song, I go through each page reference and it's just amazing how detail there is on each song. The index is really thorough well put together.

I only took one of the two volumes (from the 'extended' version box) to be signed - I realise I should have taken both now! Nice review, Andrew. What a lovely guy Mark is. I interviewed him for a couple of magazine features that year and he was extremely gracious with his time and his knowledge. And he remembered me when we met after the Hornsey Road show, which was really nice. As you say, his overriding driving force is to tell the Beatles' story right. Of course, the 'extended' version is actually Mark's full-length original work which he first submitted to the publishers. However, the publishers weren't expecting him to produce anything near as large, so asked for a mass market abridged version instead. Which of course took Mark another year of editing!

That's great that you got to interview Mark, Is it published online anywhere? I got these signed a year or two before the Hornsey Road shows, when he was doing a tour based on the With The Beatles 1963 era.

I've only read the standard version but even that blew my mind. Been reading Beatles books for over 40 years and thought I knew it all. I grew up with the Hunter Davies biography and Phillip Norman's 'Shout' or 'Shite' as Mr McCartney likes to call it. But, agreed this is the definitive text and can't imagine what skeletons he's going to pull out of the closet for the next volume. Can't wait. As for my favourite book, that would be Pete Dogget's 'You Never Give Me Your Money', you'll never look at the band the same way again after reading that. Take Care.

My own favourite is Revolution in the Head. I've read Tune In, but it was All Too Much, to coin a phrase. It's just physically too big. Nevertheless, I dip into it regularly. Mark has said that he is writing volumes two and three simultaneously - the books are not written end-to-end chronologically; more assembled as information comes to light and is dropped into the appropriate place. I heard an interview recently in which he revealed that Mean Mr Mustard was a real person that John read about in a newspaper. So Mark has done his research and slotted a brief biography into volume three.

A friend of mine is a close friend of Mark's, and he has told me of the lengths Mark goes to when researching for a book. For example, the famous 'story' of where John Lennon got the title of 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' says that he saw an magazine advert using that line. Mark has spent countless hours trawling US magazines of the period to back this up, rather than just take it as gospel. I guess we'll have to wait for Volume 3 to find out the result!

Hi Andrew, I know this is off topic a bit, but I’ve been meaning to ask you. Would I be alone in noticing remarkable similarities between the Macca song Heather from Driving Rain and the song Waterfalls by the Stone Roses. It’s uncanny how similar they are... to my ears anyway. Thank you.

Interesting, that's not something I've thought of before, and I've played waterfall on guitar at many gigs. So, thinking about it now, I can tell what you're probably talking about is that main piano riff in heather, that is then also used with the first lyric "I want to fly to the moon" I can see that that is similar to the melody of the first and second lines of the verses in waterfall. I'll have to play those two songs later and hope that it's something I can unhear in future! 😄

@@AndrewDixonMusic can I ask you one more thing, to clear up a mystery for me please? For decades I thought John Cleese was the posh British voice on the uncle Albert song from RAM. @@AndrewDixonMusic Thanks for clearing that up Andrew. I have to say it’s uncanny and remarkable how much that voice sounds like John Cleese and what’s more, it actually sounds even more like the Cleese character Basil Fawlty! As I said I just took it for granted for decades that it was Cleese. I mean just listen to the talking part of ‘We’re so sorry Uncle Albert but we haven’t heard a Bally (bloody?) thing all day. Ironically Basil Fawlty would not be a household name for another 4 or 5 years. How weird is it that Paul made up a voice that sounded identical to the main character and writer of what would go on to be the most successful British comedy of all time, a character that did not exist at the time the song was recorded. I think that’s mind blowing but then most things about Paul McCartney are!

As I write it is Spring 2022, and BBC radio is doing a season on 'modernism in literature'. So far we have had Marcel Proust and James Joyce competing for longest sentence and longest, hardest to read, book, where what they published was more of a literary maze than a book. It would seem to me that Mark Lewisholm tries to do for The Beatles what James Joyce did for Dublin with Ulysses, though Lewisham sticks to many facts where Joyce was happy to go off on a tangent. Lewisham borrows from modernism the idea of the whole of a book being far more than the sum of it's elements. Lewisholm uses shorter sentences and easier to follow syntax than James Joyce ever would. I am trying to imagine the audio books of these books might be like....

As it asks on the book in your video: "Who really were these people..." It turns out, they were not very likable. And not at all who I thought they were. My story mirrors Andrew's. I bought the book, it sat on my shelf only to be picked up years later during the pandemic. Bored, and with too much time in lockdown, I picked it up and couldn't stop reading. Mark's writing makes this a compelling read. But It's who I was reading about that left me saddened. I have been a life-long Beatles fan since seeing them on the Sullivan show in February, 1964. After reading this book, it turns out I feel as though I have wasted 50+ years of my life being a fan of this lot and helping make them millionaires in the process. For me, this is the book the bursts the Beatle bubble.
