I see lot of people use controllers and heavily reliant on the sync button, but when their tracks won't sync, if the computer has trouble processing it, then there puzzled, its why you should always rely on your good old fashioned ear, its makes you a better DJ and its much more of a buzz mixing that way, even with CDJ's, you don't gain completely accurate ear for mixing as using vinyl is the the most fundamental method way of mixing

orrr you could just beatmatch by putting the tune in, speeding up or slowing down the track using the side of the cdjs platter wheel and adjust the pitch accordingly depending on whether you had to speed it up or slow it down. Instead of taking like 4 mins to go through the whole pitch range lol

CDJs are very fun. I also have a Pioneer DDJ-T1 controller and thats fun too. Very similar to CDJs. But there's nothing like going back to your roots and loading a record onto the platter, setting the pitch, licking your finger tips, back spinning, twisting the center...
@eddiemperor10 жыл бұрын
I don't do that spin on the jog-wheel to sync, simply hit cue button on every four count. Don't follow the CDj's BPM counters they are never accurate, the jog-wheel goes clockwise when trying to sync if turn back the jog-wheel your track needs to slow down if you have to move it up your track is going too slow, your tracks are ready to be mixed perfectly once your sync track can be beatmatched at least at a 32 count beat. real DJ's beatmatch by ear, anyone can mix with a computer. The mixing itself is another skill knowing how to work with Mids Highs Lows and Gain.
@bubz41962 жыл бұрын
the bpm counters are usually accurate when you scan through recordbox first. but yea on CDJ 900s you needed to beatmatch by ears. These didn't even have a synch
@tomstickland12 жыл бұрын
I taught myself to beat match using an old pitch adjustable tape player. Years ago. You can match things up within a few seconds with practice. Then need to leave them playing for longer to get them closer. Pretty much all of the big names adjust the EQ to kill the bass on one of the tracks. That tends to hide slightly out of sync tracks. Swap the bass EQ over at some point in the cross over.

***** What Is wrong with using the sync button! So narrow minded. It's the same principle as telling an F1 driver he's not allowed to use flappy paddle gearbox. I use the sync button to instantaneously get my tracks in sync so I can remix 4 tracks together with ease, where as manual beat-matching would not allow for this. Where some more modern DJ's lack skill in the art of beat-matching they use that time to make up for it in more creative ways, and often this translates to the crowd better!

Still there is a costly display which displays the BPM's, you can just move the pitch control to match the decks BPM's. Also this guy is teaching beginners how to essentially mix, it is most like they will using vdj's with a sync function as vdjs are cheap. Don't also give me, ohh you need to be able to beatmatch for oldschool songs with real drummers, because this DJ plays straight house!
@SlayerDarkRaver12 жыл бұрын
You acctually dont need to stop it every time. If you use your jog wheel to slow the track down, or touch the plattern if you use vinyls, at the same time as you turn your pitch down you can beatmatch faster. Wich can come in handy if the track your playing just have 30 sec left and you need to beatmatch fast. Practise and enjoy
@dan_rtype10 жыл бұрын
It's pretty easy to beatmatch when the CD decks tell you the bpm and and keep the grooves locked unlike records. So all the CD DJs talking shit about Traktor and the sync button should really STFU. Try riding the pitch while mixing on vinyl, completely different ballgame.

Ofcourse it can be both! That shouldn't be a problem. Only the thing that you have to keep in thoughed is that the song will get an end so cut/fade the sample/loop at the right time for the new song coming in! Otherwise you would get an awefull silence.
@Supersonicboom711 жыл бұрын
Since when does beat matching distinguishes good Dj's apart from bad ones. Haha bad example since in the past it would be very much that. He has CDj's which display the tempo on the LCD screen, and this is correct 95% of the time and almost 100% of the time for house with a regular 4/4 Beat. This eliminates the need for using your ears for this, you can even use a sync button to get them in time near to 100% of the time. Instead of wasting time beat matching, use your time to be creative and mash up, scratch and live remix not to beat match. What separates good and bad Dj's these days is their creativity. ( I know this vid is made 4 years ago but still with his expensive decks he's lying if he says he beat matches, or he's and idiot or I'm mistaken that his decks have sync function)
@Samimolette10 жыл бұрын
Hallelujah ! someone is speaking the truth right here ! cause yeah , beatmashing is pretty cool when your only job as a dj is to switch from deck A to deck B and the track running is an 8 min long generic house track, but THEN when playing hip hop with 3 decks at once, have fun syncing the acapella while scratching and adding effects...
@iKennectz6 жыл бұрын
The second you press sync is the second you stop you cease to be a DJ and start being an Ipod with legs. Real Djs do all that while beatmatching. Some tracks the way they are produced naturally slightly fade off 4:4 point as they progress, if you don't know how to adjust that as it goes you'll have times where you totally bomb. Plus you'll mess up the next track as well and so on and so forth. Not enough people have trained ears and if you learn to beatmatch you're training your ears which is an extremely significant and important DJing skill.

If your synch doesn't work, the problem is in the beat detection of your track and you have to do that manually. If you can fix the car, why walk? Of course knowing how to beat match is important, and so is physical exercise like walking. But if you're in a hurry, you're much better off taking the car. One should know how to beatmatch, but also know that it's not essential to do it every time.

some newer models of the pioneer cdj actually show the bpm of the songs so you can easily adjust the bpm of the song, then use this kind of method for more fine tuning. This is true. I learned on vinyl, now a controller user, and beatmatching is an important skill. However, even on CDJs it's braindead easy because they have BMP displays. It's not very hard to move your pitch slider until the numbers are the same and wait until the end of the 16th bar to start the next track. I really feel the focus on beatmatching is completely overblown. It took me 2-3 months of practice to do it on vinyl. There is so much more to mixing than just beatmatching.
@bertquasar11 жыл бұрын
I agree - it just allows you more time to work on more important things than adjusting a pitch slider. There's no reason to do that anymore - and it's just a waste of time since Traktor displays the BPM anyways.

well not all songs are at totally different speeds, so many especially house music are anywhere from 118-130 and many are right in between say 124. still if you dont make full use of that pitch control and tighten it up before bringing it in you got a train wreck. also a tip is even when they are fitted well, finger tighten turn the center pin that comes through the record hole rather than turn the record with your finger, its more precise, while adjusting of course.
@grubbytech11 жыл бұрын
Actually you can use the BPM indicator for rapid beat matching. I use it regularly. What you do is to set the BPM on the pitch controller so that it just creeps into the BPM you want, then after that all the other tracks you can rapidly set by just setting the pitch controller to the same BPM. It's easy, try it fella.
@forwardpdx12 жыл бұрын
i use it sometimes for really specific stuff, but if your a dj who relies on sync, more than likely you are doing automated train wrecks, 90% of the time the sync button is not correct.

U still gotta do it by heart and ears. And I dont use my sync button.

@AndriiLemonade Haha buddy, don't know how you spin your tracks, but the essential thing a DJ does is this, beatmatching. @Friizky i feel you. im not saying you have to use the sync button. im just saying that people should stop hating. the person t=up there using the sync could actually be a great beat matcher. and someone that doesnt use the sync button and only beatmatches can still be a terrible DJ.
@cruisemissle8712 жыл бұрын
Sometimes even the sync functions of the dj software fail, because the beatgrid may have been set off beat by the software (this sometimes happens!) or the bpm has been analyzed falsely. What you need then are exactly the skills of setting a good cue point and pitch bending properly, which are explained here. Back then I also started with vinyl and CDs just like here. Thats why I understand very well whats happening when I use Traktor Pro or Serato for mixing.

In the mean time, whist doing the pitch up and then pushing off with every little pitch down adjustment, the record runs out and your like oh shit....OR train your ears to be able to hear when the beat in your headphones is moving faster or slower than the beat in your monitors and simply adjust the pitch fader at the same time as bending the tempo of the track (works for cd and vinyl) to keep it inline with the beat coming through your monitors. faster & leaves more time for other techniques :)

If you want to learn beatmatching in its true form, this is the way. To just look at a display and copy it to the other cdj is not beatmatching, anyone can do that. Try dj'ing with cdj-200 on your next gig. If you make it through the night without any trainwrecks, you can call yourself a dj!

Totally, mixing with Traktor or other pc softwares. Even those with CDj 2000, where CDs arent necessery anymore, just getting to easy

The reason he waited to drop the first beat is because he didnt want to interrupt the measure the other song was in. (I think its called measure). Most house/dance music is 4 bars per measure, and typically you get a better mix when you start one measure at the end of another, it keeps the music more in time.

I'd be more apt to subscribe if you used the old vinyl beat matching system. It translates well to the digital decks you're using and is a good thing to learn. There's nothing fast about the way you matched those up. I can do the same thing in less than 5 seconds using digital vinyl and have it land dead on every time. Also, a working knowledge of the speed of the track your playing helps.
