FYI, the BEST cover that YES ever did was Simon & Garfunkel's *America* and to the best of my knowledge, it was the LAST cover they ever recorded in a studio (at least for the next 10 albums or so). I mention it because it never showed up on any of the regular studio albums, although I think it was put on the Yesterdays album you held up. They supposedly recorded it around the *The Yes Album-Fragile* period & I think it might have been released as a single. It is absolutely full of YES Ear Candy. As you might expect by now, when they got done with their inspirations, the final product was a completely different song from the original. Absolutely brilliant, a MUST LISTEN YES song. Enjoy!

Agreed. And note that all the other songs on the “Yesterdays” album are culled from the first two albums. So listen to “America,” and then you can cross that album off your list.

@@markdrechsler5660 If he wants to review only music he hasn't listened to before, then when he listens to America off the Yesterdays album, he might want to give Dear Father on that album a listen, as it's supposed to be different from the one he's already heard (and it's a good early YES song :)

Hi Jim, me again, thanks for giving these much maligned Yes albums some love. From Yesterdays you absolutely must listen to their cover of Simon and Garfunkle's America, Yessification at it's zenith, even if you don't do a vid I think you'll love it. 🙂👍👍

How strange that I didn't notice the likeness of "Seeds of love" by Tears for Fears and "Time and a word" by Yes ! After all these years, both great songs though. I suppose if you were to scrutinize most songs, there will be a little bit "Borrowed" from somewhere or other. It doesn't deter from the fact that this is a great album and set up what was to follow, namely and arguably, Yes' best three albums - The Yes Album - Fragile and Close to the Edge. An argument for another day, just so pleased that this band exist at all !!!

Glad you enjoyed. I'm still really impressed with the quality of the vinyl. Speaking of influences, the theme at the very start of The Prophet is from Holst's The Planets, in particular Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity. Still really excited for side 2 of Going For The One, if only to listen to Wondrous Stories followed by Awaken. I strongly feel they go together thematically, not particularly musically. I'll go in to that once you get in to side 2 of that album.

Relayer was influenced by the aggressive jazz rock of Mahavishnu Orchestra according to Jon Anderson. Rick Wakeman leaving the band after Tales from Topographic Oceans, a grandiose conceptual project he did'nt like, was replaced by the Swiss keyboardist Patrick Moraz from the bands Mainhorse and Refugee, who was more of a jazz rock player than Wakeman. Wakeman said he was satisfied with Relayer sounding totally different from anything he would have done musically. Wakeman did return in 1977 for the Going For The One album and then the 1978 Tormato album.

Thanks Jim! My favourite from this album is Time And A Word. However, there a lot of other strong songs on the album. The desire to move forward and develop their music lost them two members. Pete Banks was unhappy with adding orchestration to the album so he left and was replaced by Steve Howe for The Yes Album. Tony Kaye lasted one album longer and was reluctant to expand his keyboards with synthisizers so he was replaced by Rick Wakeman on Fragile.

A naive Yes exploring where to go. It would lead to great albums. Only a few songs from this album, like Time and a word and Sweet Dreams made it into a live performance, as far as I know. Don’t forget the album: Anderson, Brufort, Wakeman and Howe.

Just in case some out there have never seen it, here's Yes on Belgian TV promoting Time and a Word after Steve Howe had replaced Peter Banks: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYeViICAmcqHosk I've also seen in-studio promos for a couple TaaW songs with the band miming along (with Peter Banks.) But the Belgian TV film is gold, because that era after Steve had joined but before they retreated to the Devon farm to write The Yes Album was short but important in terms of Steve finding his place in the band's soundscape. There are some bootlegs out there where you can hear what the band sounded like.

The cover of America on Yesterdays is amazing and definitely worth a spin. IIRC, the rest of that compilation were songs from the first two records, which you’ve already covered. Also, Seeds of Love is an amazing album. If you haven’t heard the whole album, definitely check it out. TFF has an extremely underrated discography.

 The two tracks which bookend the album, the cover of Simon and Garfunkel's America and Dear Father are the only two tracks from Yesterdays not on the first two albums. Both are good, but America is especially worth giving a listen. I highly recommend listening to Simon and Garfunkel's original first, if you don't know it.

I really liked this! For some strange reason I lost track of Yes after their first three albums. But you’re pulling me back in and now I’m going to try and make up for lost time, so thanks! Btw, the first time I saw Yes was in 1972 at an outdoor concert in CT, USA promoting Close To The Edge. The second time was in Leicester, U.K., in 2014…a gap of 42 years! (minus Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson). Fortunately Chris Squire was still alive (RIP). Anyway, they performed their first three albums (all in order, I should add). I was in my element! Sorry if I told you all this before…the mind goes first, they say. Hehe Oh, and just remembered… the warm up bands for YES in ‘72 was Edgar Winter who had just released ‘Frankenstein’ and a little known band called The Eagles? They had a hit with ‘Witchy Woman’. I wonder whatever became of them? Ps… love Seeds of Love.

Yes and Jon have done the song Time And A Word live many times, it's one of my favorite early tracks. I agree, side 1 is better for sure, except for Time And A Word which is the best song on the album, love it.

Just recently discovered and subscribed to your channel, Jim, and am really enjoying it. Great to see your appreciation of Yes' first two albums, which to me are criminally underrated and under-reacted. Well done! I wish you could have experienced their catalog in release order, but regardless, I'm looking forward to your continued explorations. Also, not sure if your familiar with them, but if you're interested in what Mr Banks and Mr Kaye did after leaving the group, I'd suggest you at least give a listen to Banks' band Flash's first couple of albums and Kaye's group Badger and their interesting choice to make their first album a live one (One Live Badger) with a gorgeous Roger Dean cover. Keep up the good work and enjoy!😀👍🏼

The album cover was banned in America, deemed "inappropriate" by the American record distributors, so they had to make an alternate cover, which is just a pic of the band that includes Steve Howe, since he had already joined by that time. So silly 🙂

Have been watching a few YES reactions with ya, and have enjoyed every moment. I burned these albums up back in high school and college in the 70s. The only thing we had back then were vinyls of course, that is until the newfangled 8 track tapes came out, and we were on top of the world. Glad that you use vinyls. I still will NEVER use headphones, as that I feel you also lose a LOT of sound when they are used. We still used big amps and big speakers, in order to feel the vibrations moving throughout your body. In the old days we used to put the turntable in a different room altogether than the listening room, because the loudness of the tunes and the vibration would actually cause the needle to lose place and skip. A lot of words, and none of those were the point of the comment. My question was why do you manually put the needle on the record?? In the old days this would be extremely worrying. In fact, it might have even caused a fist fight (not really, but almost) (one reason for that is that many times we were a little "high", and accidents would happen with very bad results, so automated was better). Just wondering. Keep up the GREAT work. I have all of these tunes, of course, but sometimes it's cool to see someone else has class and great taste also!!
