Second shot: caught with more ease Beau then looks at both hands, realizes she can't catch a third bullet and stares down the barrel right before Percy pulls the trigger straight in her face, blowing her off her feet. Then he puts a foot on her shoulder as she lies there and unloads Animus into her torso.

It's kinda just a bargain bin battlemaster crossbow fighter, really. The only thing that made Percy strong was the "golden snitch" which was obviously a badly balanced D20 and bad homebrewing that led to some odd interactions between gunslinger maneuvers and, well, y'know, there not being saving throws or limitations for most of the added effects. I don't know why they bothered with homebrewing gunslinger instead of just reflavoring a crossbow fighter. Taliesin's a very tactical player and it would've been a treat to see what hijinks he could get up to with commander's strike in a party with Vax/Grog, or just completely unload on someone with precision strike+sharpshooter+action surge.
@keithreinsel78423 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-zf3yk Have you played the gunslinger class as well as the crossbow battlemaster? I find the gunslinger to be much more fun flavor and style wise. They rebalanced gunslinger as they went along-keep in mind Percy is now a level 20 Gunslinger. And he did all of that without Bad News-which packs a punch-and without using grit points.
@JohnSmith-zf3yk3 жыл бұрын
@@keithreinsel7842 I played a version of it a couple years ago for a one shot and found it pretty underwhelming at level 11. There're really 3(4 if you count the somewhat niche commander's strike) big reasons crossbow battlemaster outperforms gunslinger: 1). Precision Strike can be used before or after an attack roll(It's basically your very own bardic inspiration) which lets you gamble on sharpshooter more often for gobs of damage. 2). There are a lot of really good maneuvers and more of them than there are trick shots. Additionally you'll usually get more mileage out of your superiority die than you will grit, since the former is static and the latter depends on having a high wisdom. 3). This never really came up in the one-shot I played, but consistency is important. When the fight is already going well, you don't need to take gambles. If things are going poorly, Gunslinger has the unavoidable handicap of potentially making an already bad fight worse(misfires/breaks). And get creative my man! There's nothing stopping you from adding some spicy flavor to a character without touching the mechanics at all. I could reflavor a BM Fighter right now in which he uses a rapid fire "power staff" instead of a hand crossbow without touching any of the dice or class features.
@RoxxiTheDiceGoblin2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-zf3yk Good points, and a fair review, but I'll throw my two ecnts in here as well as someone who's played Matt's Gunslinger and looked at other options when DM's weren't willing to allow the flavour. I'll start off with this: It's not about optimisation,, at the end of the day? FUCK Optimisation, do I try and make a build as good as it can be? Yes I do, but that's where my optimisation ends, flavour is everything, and Gunslinger's FLAVOUR is very important to a gunner based character compared to the build you're suggesting. Now to your points: 1: You get Grit points back on signficant kills and critical hits, this allows a fair DM to keep giving you a resource for your trick shots, if the DM isn't being fair then yes, this can be nightmare'ish to deal with, but imo, no worse than any other class's limited resources, and much stronger than precision strike for so many reasons. 2: That is 100% completely subjective and entirely depends on your play style and the type of characters you like making, there are far more trick shots I've used regularly than there are maneuvers, in fact whenever I make a Battlemaster I use the SAME exact maneuvers everytime because they are the only ones that fit what I like to do and how I like to play with my characters. I feel I have far more options with Trick Shots. See? Subejctive. 3: Misfire/Breaks aren't as big of a problem as you're making it out to be, most guns have a misfire score of like... 3 or 2, unless you're will wheaton chances of rolling those consistently enough for it to create this "handicap" you're talking about is very very unlikely, in fact this is about as likely as something with a -3 succeeding a DC16 saving throw, and sure it's an action to repair, but again: FLAVOUR And to address your final point about reflavouring classes without touching the mechanics at all. You're not wrong, you absolutely can do that, hell I do it a ton myself and have done for a huge amount of different characters, but it can only go so far. Mechanical flavour is just as important as reflavouring stuff that already exists, because some stuff just doesn't work with the theme's of someone's character. Matt's Gunslinger was made to fit a theme that carried over from Pathfinder 5e, that of a gunner who's primary focus is using guns and making guns. It synergises well with a variety of classes that you can use to increase that flavour further, for example, Matt's Gunslinger and Artifcer is one of my favourite combinations as it fully encaptulates a tinkerer archetype, which is what percy is and what the mechanics of the class reflect.
@JohnSmith-zf3yk2 жыл бұрын
@@RoxxiTheDiceGoblin To be fair, the ultimate problem I have with gunslinger is the win more/lose more(point 1 and 3) of the class everything else is more or less fine and just gripes on my part. If the fight is so hard that you need those extra grit points, that fight is probably overtuned. The logic is you're already critting and killing things. If you still feel like you NEED those extra grit points that fight in all honesty is probably overtuned or not meant to be won. On the other hand if the fight is that hard, having a gun jam can be rough while a break can be disastrous. I don't know about you but I don't use poorly weighted dice like Taliesin's "golden snitch". Any dice I use goes through the cup of water test and if I can't get 10 different results after a minute of flicking it in the water I don't use that die. My stance remains the same for the most part. I feel like something needs to be changed in the kit to make it less swingy. The extra grit points likely won't turn a lost fight into a victory but a gun break can turn a won fight into a loss. Now, I will say: If your campaign starts at a later level like 5 and you can bring along an extra gun or two then I think gunslinger is fine. A gun jam won't cost your whole attack action to unjam and a gun break won't be nearly as penalizing since you can just drop it and pull out another gun. Out of the gate at level 1 having a gunslinger in the party can actually be pretty dangerous. Something to keep in mind is my perspective of gunslinger as someone that plays a lot of arcane casters: Some of the best CC spells require an action and skill check to escape or be rescued from and that alone makes them great. Gunslingers self-impose those great CC spells /on themselves/ whenever a gun jams before level 10 which isn't something you want to have happen in a hard fight.

I mean obviously you can't have Beau and Keyleth at the same time unless you just want Marisha to put on a one-woman show. And if you had Travis as Grog instead of Fjord, then someone in the VM team has to play their M9 character instead. you could sub in Ashley for Yasha, but then VM would be completely down a healer and then M9 could just have Beau burn all her ki points stunning Grog while Yasha keeps whittling down his HP. If you had both Grog and Keyleth in play, you'd need _two_ people from the VM lineup here to switch to M9. Otherwise the entire PVP would be Jester soloing all of VM minus their weakest member. So if we stick with the earlier choice of Yasha for M9, then either Sam or Liam will have to switch. If Caleb's in play, VM lose their rogue and M9 get a primary caster. Selecting Nott would probably give us the most balance (barb vs barb, CODzilla vs CODzilla, rogue vs rogue).

I haven't watched Season One of Critical Role, but why's this gun guy allowed to take Bonus actions in the middle of his Action? Does he have some kind of homebrew class feature that lets him do that?
@navyblueprince3 жыл бұрын
yes! There's, unfortunately, no Gunslinger class for 5th edition so Matt had to homebrew Percy's abilities.

Bonus actions, per RAW, can be taken at any point of the turn, even during an action, in the same way that movement can be split up as you go.If a Fighter 5/Rogue 2 wanted to use one attack on an enemy, then bonus action Disengage from that enemy, and then move and attack another enemy with their second attack that's within their movement speed, that's totally possible.

But maybe Matt's got a houserule about it or something. Like Holding Turns, or treating Natural 20s as special (when it's not an attack roll or a Death save).

So from what i know, percy's guns have specific ammo counts and needs to reload before firing if he runs out of ammo. Part of the class was to reload as a bonus action, but it consumes the bonus action and without reloading, no attack. His bigger rifle, bad news, was a singleshot rifle for example

When you have multiple attacks you can use a bonus action in between separate attacks. There's nothing in the rules that says all attacks have to be taken before you can do anything else. It just means you can't take any other main actions in that turn. So when you take the Attack action, and have extra attacks from the feature of the same name, you can break them up however you choose, just like movement. So basically, if you have the means, you can attack, bonus action healing word, move, attack, attack, or something similar.
