I have been proudly registered Independent all my adult life. I live in a deep red state, so voting for the former "republican party" was always part of the deal. Literally almost no Democrats to vote for in my district. But I have voted straight 'D' ticket since 2000, after 5 crazies on the "supreme court" told the entire nation that our votes do not count. I am not a fan of the Corporate Democratic Party, either. So remaining Independent has been my personal protest against them. Not identifying with a political party that tries to ignore Progressives like myself. But I have to tell you, this Fascist move in Tennessee is something I have been watching for ever since 2016. The mask is TOTALLY off the former "republican party". What happened in the Tennessee legislature is just the beginning. You can count on every Red state legislature to get busy on a host of new "rules" to expel ANY dissenting voices of the opposition party. I may hate Corporate Oligarchy, but at least my vote still counts a little in a Corporate Oligarchy - I have to vote for whomever the Corporate-owned party tells me to vote for, and it will not be a Progressive a majority of the time, if ever. Blatant Fascist Authoritarianism from the former "republican party" is where I draw the line. Time to pick a side.

Adding that Mr. Jones can simply run for office again, be reinstated, and CAN'T ever be charged for the same offense again. How kind. Then I found a bit of hope in this from the NYT: "What would happen to the vacated seats? Special elections would be held to fill the seats of the expelled lawmakers. Mr. Jones and Mr. Pearson will be able to run again in the elections and be re-elected to their seats. Local governing bodies in each district can appoint temporary representatives - who could even be the expelled lawmakers themselves - to hold the seats until the special elections are held. Multiple members of the Metropolitan Council, which oversees Nashville, have pledged to nominate Mr. Jones to his seat as a temporary appointee." As always, we love you Beau. Thanks for all you do.

German here. I guess it's fair to say that we have a bit of experience voting for parties that clearly say that they want the people to shut up and obey. Why did the people nevertheless vote for them? Because they WANT to be ruled. Being ruled means that you aren't responsible for what's happening in your life. You were just following orders. If being free means being possibly held accountable, many will prefer to not be free (doesn't matter what they say in their Facebook profile).

I have said this for a long time. Making the choice requires taking some measure of responsibility. But if you can delegate yours responsibility to someone else, it seems so much easier. Read Mephisto. Author Klaus Mann shows how the nazi regime came to power by playing on peoples cowardice. One of the characters, an angry young nazi, realizes afterwards that they were not improving his life, and all their talk of workers rights and dignity for germany was hot air. He ends up dead soon after. This is what will happen to the supporters of fascist movements. They will be useful during the rise, then thrown to the wolves. Fascism is not about building, they will strip rights from people until there is no one left to strip rights from, forming a smaller and smaller in-group. It's a death cult.

@@joeb134 I think one of the biggest problems is that rural folk have often never lived in a city and lots of city folk never lived in a rural area. They don't understand the fundamentally different concerns and needs that come from the differences in population density. We need policies that can adapt to the various scenarios and honestly everyone is going to have to give up something. City people will need to fund more hospitals for rural areas and rural people might have to jump through more hoops to own guns because easy guns and living on top of each other is not a great mix at all and can't be solved unless we build a smuggler proof wall around the cities. Fundamentally, rural communities can easily come together to support those that are needy without a lot of government help. And if they don't manage to do it, then they aren't forced to interact daily with the people they have failed passing them on the street and having such numbers that it overwhelms the hospital or police. Where the numbers are so high a single church can't help even half of them. Which I think is why people tend to become more progressive once moving to the cities. That or become gated community type people.

I don’t know very much about Tennessee, but I do know how to read their State Constitution. Article II, Legislative Department, Section 27. “Any member of either House of the General Assembly shall have liberty to dissent from and protest against, any act or resolve which he may think injurious to the public or to any individual, and to have the reasons for his dissent entered on the journals.” The Section in question mentions nothing about proper behavior and good manners, the ‘decorum’ certain members of the legislature wring their hands over. Is the State of Tennessee violating its own Constitution along with the rights of its citizens?

This will rebound on the Republican Fascist racists like nothing they've ever seen. They didn't get the message in the 2018 mid-terms. They didn't get the message with the massive rejection of Trump in the 2020 Presidential election. They didn't get the message in the 2022 mid-terms, either. So, now we the sane people of America will wait for what is akin to the tidal wave that God Almighty sent to lift up Noah's Ark, folks. It's already started - in Wisconsin on April 4, 2023 when a "liberal" leaning Judge was elected by 11 points to the Wisconsin Supreme Court over the formerly endorsed "conservative" (a/k/a Fascist anti-women's rights elitist, the man who is a hater of everybody who isn't of European descent) candidate who was defeated when running for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 2020 and endorsed by Trump then. In Wisconsin, winning a state-wide election by 1 point is considered a "landslide" - so compare that to the outcome of the 2023 election for that seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court - ELEVEN points in favor of the "liberal" candidate. For the first time in 15 years, the "liberals" will be the majority (4-3) on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. That was the continuation of the 2024 election cycle tidal wave. Watch what happens as it increases in strength as a result of what the Republican super-majority did in the Tennessee Legislature.

I'm a Tennessean who had moved away, but found myself back here a little over 10 years ago because of circumstances beyond my control and am now the sole carer for my mother after she had a stroke. In that time, I've seen local elections go from an actual choice to the Republican candidate running unopposed. And it's always a forgone conclusion that the Republican will be elected as the state rep from this area. I vote for the Democrat, but it's like trying to stop a tsunami with plastic wrap. I'm deeply disturbed by what's happening here. But I truly feel that there is nothing I can do. Not to mention that I'm a bit preoccupied with caring for my mother while also being disabled myself. I have absolutely no energy for anything else on top of that. So, y'all, please keep in mind that there are those of us here in TN that are not okay with what's happening here, but at the same time are not in a position to do anything about it. It's kind of hard to when we aren't even given a choice when voting. It's not only frustrating, it's frightening - especially when we can see it's more than likely just only a matter of time before they come for us, too.

I'm a life-long East Tennessean. My family has voted republican since it was a dirty word before the War between the States. This is not the party they supported. And I've heard from a lot of similar people, people who have watched the state government lurch into Trump Populism led by the Republican party at all levels. And don't see today's party reflecting their beliefs. I suspect that a number of state representatives & senators will find serious primary opponents next year. And those who survive to the general won't have the support outside of the populist core that's taken over.
