As a 51-year resident of Memphis, we were thrilled when the Feds got involved with this. Until then, we were expecting the usual injustice from our justice system - the proverbial slap on the wrist. But a badge is no exemption from the law... or, at least, it shouldn't be. We do have a lot of good officers in Memphis. As a downtown resident, I meet many of them. We need more like that lot... and none like the other.

Indeed! I worked downtown and Beale St area and the officers were mostly good cops trying to keep a lid on tourists and amateur crooks. That was 25 years ago and I'm glad to be out of Memphis these days. Loved it while I was there but time changes things.

I saw the racism institutionalized in our justice system beginning with the April 23, 1985 murder of Lloyd D. "Tony" Stevenson at the hands of the Portland Police. United States Marine Corp Veteran, father of five--Fred Meyer security guard; a large Black man--Lloyd had stopped a robbery at a 7-11. The police, busy with their suspect--noticed a fight in the other corner of the parking lot. The officers rushed over, and since "the big Black man must be the bad guy"--they went after Lloyd. Choked him. He never got to see his kids again. In response to public outcry, members of the police printed up T-shirts, with the image of a revolver pointed out at you, and the slogan "Don't Choke 'em, SMOKE 'em!" --the unwritten but obvious subtext: "We will now escalate police violence against Blacks, in response to your blowback. We can murder with impunity--and don't you forget it." Terror is a favorite tool of cowards. I remember when Stevenson was buried with military honors--then too there was racist static--as if a murdered Marine deserved any less. As a little kid the whole terrifying story made me sad, and furious. Reality sunk in: Systemic violence--to the point of murder? Racism was alive and well--and it was way worse than just a hideous personal character flaw. Tony wasn't the first... Not by a long shot. But he could've been the last. Public outcry over police violence still elicits the same cowardly responses: "We are the power. You cannot deny us our racism. We will respond by escalating police violence." I know the DOJ has investigations open regarding Portland, but I don't know the specifics currently. @katec7862 So you might be right about that.

@anotherkenlon

Sad part is they *are* bad apples. It's just that no one remembers the full saying: "A bad apple spoils the whole barrel." If you have a bunch of apples stored, and none of them start rotting, then they can stay good a very long time, drying out but still being edible. But if one actually starts to rot, *all* of them will rot. And that's what's happened to the police - anyone who goes in with decent intentions doesn't stay that way.

I'm actually a little skeptical about that. I think it would instead incentivize cops who might have come forward about a crime to keep quiet, because it would hurt them, too. I'm not sure how much it would prevent, though, so maybe there's an argument there, but if it's spread out, it's less of a deterrent than it should be. I think the officers involved should be liable, and anyone who knew, but didn't tell, should also face consequences, at the very least losing their job. Regarding that last bit, I like what the FBI does regarding candidness. If an FBI agent is asked about something serious like this, they have the right to not say anything if they want to, but that means they can't be an FBI agent anymore. No black spot or reprimand, just "okay thank you, we don't need your services anymore". That fosters a culture of candid transparency.
@YTEdy
@YTEdy Жыл бұрын
I agree. I would add that somewhere between 95% and possibly up to 98% of cops try to do a good job. We hear about the mistakes, but that doesn't mean all cops should be punished for the mistakes of a minority. There would also be legal issues of taking from their pension, just as you wouldn't take from every teacher's pension if a few teachers were caught molesting students. @@MeldaRavaniel

The problem is systematic. Anyone who is interested can find the manuals used to train police officers. Those manuals and programs are based on treating the public as an occupied population with enemy combatants imbedded within the population. Our own taxpayers are considered to be threats to the police forces. As long as we are training an occupying army, don’t be shocked by the way our fellow citizens are treated.

Fewer than you would think, since, according to The Daily Memphian, since 2019, 40 people have died in custody in our jail at 201 Poplar, managed by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department. A couple of weeks ago some jail inmates were chained to each other and locked in a holding cell next to a courtroom. One stabbed another one to death. It's mostly havoc here in Memphis with our law enforcement. But some are not corrupt. A few months ago, two MPD officers were called for a homeless man making a disturbance in a public library. When they approached the guy, he shot one of the officers in the head. His partner eliminated the homeless guy. And don't even get me started on our stunning crime problem. Today, we were declared the most dangerous city in the US. Our crime stats leave Detroit and Baltimore in the dust. It's all complex. And no one seems to have any idea what to do to fix it. Certainly no systemic approach to addressing social inequality generations deep. Those scorpion cops were and are full out monsters. But our law enforcement people are really up against it with the rampant crime. If you live in Memphis, even if you love our city, and you're not scared witless even at home, you're just clueless.🎉

I actually watched all 4 of the videos they released on that, I normally would not but I was just looking for anything that might explain it. I hope the guy that got the plea was the one standing back because the two guys holding the man while the third that king hit him while immobilised, I don't think they are doing less time.

If this had been left up to the state and the PD, these "officers" would still be on the street stalking new victims. It's time for Memphis citizens to replace their city government with actual human beings who will clean out their PD.

The light green color that represents the LEO's shirt on Beau's t-shirt in this video would be the color of the Shelby County Sheriff and NOT Memphis Police Chief. Sarcasm!!! The Scorpion Division is allegedly the police chief's baby from when she headed or was connected to Atlanta Police's infamous Red Dog Scorpion Unit.

Beau, I hope this starts sending messages. I still don't understand why they need that 'Cop City' . Killing that beautiful young activist, as he sat, protesting the destruction of such a beautiful green space to train cops to be more 'military'? To have more groups like this? Why not out in Arizona. They could learn in hot, empty land! 👍💙💖💙🥰✌
