Greetings from Greece! A thorough search with a torch of the slit at 1.53 might have yielded a bigger corvina and/or some goldbloch grouper (stira). Stiras (as well as corvinas) love this kind of morphology in the bottom especially in silty waters and frequently share holes together.
@DanielMann7 ай бұрын
Kalimera! I had a really good look in there with the 60cm gun later in the day. It wasn't that deep, around 8-9m so suspect the fish don't reside there as often. I was really hoping for a white grouper with the silty bottom but have never seen one in Albania. Only in Rhodes but with very similar bottom structure.

3:15 That's a Giant Tun (Tonna Galea) they used to be abundant in the Mediterranean but tour enterprises killed them for their shells to sell them as souvenir especially in Malta. Usually they keep the corals and water clean and are a good sign of a healthy environment, however they are poisonous if consumed. @Daniel Mann. They are also usually buried under the sand floor and only leave a small hole at the center, or they are half covered and look like a clay vase.
@DanielMann7 ай бұрын
Great information! I thought it was unusual to see such a large shell in a fairly touristic and populated area. I guess being poisonous to eat they are somewhat less desirable.
@morganames81427 ай бұрын
Daniel, (1) at 17 seconds into your video, you have a line attached to a weight belt-mounted loop on the middle of your back. Do you *usually* wear this line attached to your buoy? What's the decision-making that you employ as to whether to attach the surface support line and have to tow it around with you or rather to have the surface support station anchored? Is it just that you don't want to have to be retrieving the anchor (lifting the 2 - 3 kg weight through the water column) in order to reposition it for your next drop and then have to make surface swims from your ascent point back to the buoy? Does this line present an issue with fouling your freediving fins that you have to observe? Visibility looks incredible!!! (2) Interested in why -- if you knew you'd be dropping on rock formations ... given your previous experience here -- you, initially, would choose your longer speargun only to subsequently recognize the 60cm gun was more appropriate? Is your thinking that perhaps there just might be a target out-in-the-blue that would require increased range?? LOVE your body of work, Mate!!!!
@DanielMann7 ай бұрын
I have the drop weight on my belt on the swim out as it’s easier to move the speargun around instead of it being attached to that. I don’t normally fish like this but as mentioned it was just a few warm up dives before we got to the place we wanted to dive, I then anchored the float. The first drop on a place has the potential to find a large grouper out of a hole, a dentex or amberjack. Thats why I used the larger roller first. If you see nothing then looking in holes is the next strategy. It’s hard to do it the other way around because if you drop first with a 60cm gun and see a dentex, very difficult to shoot it.

Having dived that coast Dan, I would say on a clear viz day you might have seen that Bream from miles away and killed it with a long ambush but you would not have had a chance to shoot it just swimming along at 3 meters water as you were. Hi Daniel. Great video as always. I’m curious, do you still use the DJI Osmo Action 3? The shots are so crisp. I have bad experience with the Action 3 being unsharp and poor quality. /Mads
@DanielMann7 ай бұрын
Hi there, yes I’ve been using the Osmo action for all my POV stuff since spring last year. I don’t actually have a GoPro anymore (lost my hero 10 in spring!). I prefer the reliability of the Osmo action 3 and the battery life is way better. Never had a single issue with it to be honest. Only gripe is the white balance changes underwater as it doesn’t have a native white balance setting like the GoPros. Not enough to change back though. I think the unsharp images have been solved with firmware. Mine has always been great for me. I’ll probably get an action 4 at some stage.

How do you deal with fishing licences in the countries you go. I am planning to do a trip soon. Do you just pay the yearly fee or is there a special permit?
@DanielMann7 ай бұрын
Depends on the country. There isn’t a license in Albania or Greece. Denmark it’s an online thing and pretty cheap for the year. Spain is a bit of a mission but also valid for a year or two depending on the municipality. Croatia it’s an online one from a day to a week for visitors (not that cheap). Portugal is an online thing and I believe you pick a week or a month. Not the easiest online system. I should probably do a video on it all!
