Thank you for this wonderful piece of music . It thouches me right in the middle of my heart. It is one of those few pieces of music where I hear the first line and think : I want that on my funeral ! Beautiful piece, but I feel like the lines are a little stagnant and monotone in parts. It is all because the counterpoint rules are keeping it from being more fluid, but I think if you adjust the soprano and alto lines in some places, the counterpoint rules will allow for more fluctuation in the lines. I love the way it is written now, but I do think it can be done differently as well.
@tazeltine5 жыл бұрын
It's not what you do in music, it's how. The homophonic texture is fine. It has worked over 200 years. The singers and conductor have the responsibility to MAKE it interesting. Their fault, not the writing.

Wrong notes in altos on river, and corresponding melodic places where sops sing Do Re Mi. It SB a G dissonance/pedal, but they sing an F#, paralleling Basses. Both notes, work, but as written, you get the beautiful clash. Also, bad English at the end. It should be "I alone must LIE." (Lay is what you do to an object, Lie is the action that you the speaker DO.) Check w/ any English teacher.

Only in counterpoint. Those parallels are found throughout the world of music (c.f. Beethoven all over!!). Modern music is built on those parallels (Morten Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre, all of pop...). No, wait. What about organum? That's over 1000 years old! Nothing worse than those who think they "know." Go study.

Good piece musically but the text is shallow and not really meaningful. In my view choral music should exclusively be singing about some greater good, some God or things we cannot grasp.

I have to say, that strikes me as an incredibly reductive lens through which to view choral music.
