Emily Bronte’s poem beautifully captures our longing for the carefree, simpler days of childhood, and celebrates the little ways in which we can still visit them. Ola Gjeilo’s music, however, catapults the whole experience into the sublime with the lyrical energy of childhood.

I played this song repeatedly as i travelled to the West Coast of the South Island. Driving through the Canterbury High Country and crossing the Bealey River to my Turangawaewae of Arthur's Pass and watching the mountains rise covered with fresh snow as they came into view. Last Tuesday when I was driving the sun was out and indeed it was a day of beauty.

The composer needs to write vocal lines in phrases tailored to how long a person can sing before they need to take a breath. After they start singing, the sopranos aren't given a rest until 1:25 and the altos until 1:34.
