With all that energy and that leaf chopping technique, make the "greens" (nitrogen) for a huge compost pile, the other half of it "brown" (dead leaves) for carbon ... alternate layers of green and brown. Throw a few handfuls of good forest soil in between the layers to bring microorganisms. No branches or twigs or dry stems. Water well. Keep moist. Turn over weekly with hay fork. Compost in no time for great organic matter to add to that hard scrabble clay soil. HUGE compost piles! Organic farmer, free.

Love the way you handle things just like this one on taking care of the land so you're rice can grow nice and healthy !!! but excuse me for telling you what i would do it's to use some bamboo as water pipes to make drainage to all you're sorroundings to all that water running around !!! and then cover them with soil so you don't have to be trapped with so much mud and water, and the land can be dry an clean as you always have taken care off. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. I personally like it there as it is brick and cement built with a beautiful decoration in the middle and you can hear the water all around which is so soothing and can sit on the wall watching the fish swim around which can be so tranquil. And you can appreciate it everyday as it is close to enjoy. Besides with the fish is the water it is great for plants and an easy water source when he is making things and needs water to mix cement and many other benefits. If you don't like it is fine but others like myself will. As I love the sound of water close to me. :) It is like having a beautiful aquarium in your front yard instead of in your house. :)

I have never grown rice but I have grown many things in my garden. I would say as he has poor clay like soil there so he chopped the leaves so they would break down quicker, in essence rot and release the nutrients into the soil to make it better for growing things in, and it takes a while for that to happen.

Okay I am laughing here now and no it will not. Water is soothing, beneficial for life and serves many purposes. Other than the water line to his sink all water features are away and in front of the house and he always has drainage ditches he has made that takes the water away from the house and down over the embankment. Even his fish pond he built is away from the house and is cemented in and has a house going out of it to keep the water level down because of how much it seems to rain there. Please go back and look at the lay of his land and his drainage system he has and you will see how smart he was and yet everything looks so well put together.
