Fun fact: Viserys's crown falling off and Daemon picking it up for him wasn't in the script originally. It happened as a genuine accident in rehersals but Paddy and Matt stayed in character and improvised their way through it. The director liked it so much that they then included it when they actually shot the scene. Two stunning actors...

If anything, Alicent respects and obeys authority and there was this conflict: the authority of Viserys who appointed Rhaenyra and the authority of her father who wants Aegon on the throne. I think it's only when she misinterprets Viserys's last words that she finally commits fully to supporting Aegon, only then is the conflict solved for her as she now believes Viserys also wanted Aegon. A couple details I noticed upon a re-warch that made this episode even better: - Viserys looking at Jace and Helaena dancing is bittersweet; warms his heart to see his family getting along, but also reminds him of what could've been had he put his foot down, as you said, on the betrothal Rhaenyra proposed all those years ago. - This one is just kind of cute, but Baela was ready to defend her man during that fight! Vaemond has really interesting motivations in this episode. Of course he is right to object an impostor usurping his family, but at the same time it's undeniable that personal ambition is what drives him the most. By binding Jace and Luke with Baela and Rhaena the Velaryon bloodline would have continued regardless through Laena's line, but he still objected the proposal because of his ambitions and his pride. Once Viserys declared Luke the heir Vaemond was done for, it was only a matter of time before the Blacks (mainly Daemon) came for him next. Despite only being an important character for this episode it's really cool how much we got to understand him and his actions and ambitions.

Vaemond never had much of a claim anyway, as it were acknowledged that Rhaenyra's sons were bastards and that Laenor died without issue then the next in line to inherit Driftmark would be his sister Laena and then her twin daughters. I still think the theory that Alicent was in love with Rhynera is very plausible. Because of her faith and the way the world works she knew she couldn't have what she truly wanted. But she was also jealous of Rhynera being able to do as she pleased without consequences or at least by her standards. The resentment grew til it overpowered everything but she never truly hated Rhynera. And she missed having her friend, she doesn't have anyone close to her that isn't doing so for personal gain.

The way it was shot/edited when Viserys let’s his crown fall and we see a hand reach to pick it up we believe is Viserys only to be revealed that was Daemon picking it up, followed by a “come on”. Perfect perfect scene. Impossible not to get emotional. Also, Daemon is so funny man. He can keep is tongue… 🙂 DISSARM HIM 🤬😡 No need… 🥺 Kinda funny that Otto is a disgusting human being but is always supportive of Halaena

Aemond wasn’t so much threatened but annoyed that Daemon ruined his fun and he didn’t see a point to continue. Those two are very similar yet incredibly different, with Aemond duty is very much what his character strives for- he’s ready to do so no matter the cost and already at a young age is prepared for things greater than child fights (although as with the dinner, he’s still young) but he understand for example that tourneys are of no matter to him, meanwhile daemon when he was that age was more prone to ladies and tourneys and a different type of ego. FYI daemon should have trained the strong boys better they really aren’t doing much strength wise 😩. Ewan Mitchell is incredible as an actor. Him and Matt really carry a lot (as does most of the cast though)

Viserys was a good person but a terrible father and king. He always talked about not being challenged so he could prove his worth but the truth is he was always given opportunity just like the triachy war but looked over them to the point that soldiers were dying and the nobles house were getting against the crown. He made his daughter an heir out of guilt which made the society bitter against him but when it was time to actually train Rhaenyra, he refused to look after her and teach her what her purpose is and why is it necessary. The only thing he taught her is she needs to somehow to cling to the throne for her own because a certain prophecy needs to pass through her bloodline. She did cling to the throne but for selfish reasons and through wrong plans along the way. His other mistake is marrying someone from old town, a place which already had influence in Westros even before Targaryens came there, in a family's who's faith, custom and cultures are opposite from the Targaryens. To add on top of that he continuously kept having children with Alicent, majority of them being sons. He totally ignored them instead of looking after them himself and teaching them not to resent their elder sister for the exceptional power that she was being given. He is the sole reason house Targaryen would ended turning out the way it'll do. Shoot out to Paddy though, his acting was amazing in this show.

He didn't train Rhanerya and refuse to look after her? That's exactly what he is been doing the entire show. He told the profecy, the first episodes he was trying to get her allies in the court through wedding, allies that are still with her by the end of the seasons, she messed up, by refusing to talk to him because of Alicent, then messed up with Daemon and Sir crispy, so he had to cover that up, we don't know much because of timeskip but she was part of the council with him taking part in big decision, so she learned kingship with him. Rhaenyra messed up multiple times, despite him warning her about and he had to support her regardless and he did it. He mostly an absent father for his other kids but it mostly because he getting sick the more they growing up
@billygrayson460 Жыл бұрын
@@sgcastle8389Yeah i kinda agree Rhaenyra was a liability for her own goal. At the end his mariage wasn't a problem, even Otto was neutralized, but Rhaenyra actions made her enemy of Alicent who raised the kids especially with the idea that he will be killed if he doesn't become King. The beef went to the children and we know the results.
@Tooba-K123 Жыл бұрын
@@sgcastle8389 I don't deny that Rhaenyra mostly causes her own problems but that doesn't mean Viserys didn't play a role in some of it. Even before Viserys told her the winter prophecy in the first episode, Rhaenyra was trying to say that he ignored her since her mother passed away (we know as the audience he was grieving in his own way) but now talking about prophecy. It made Rhaenyra think she was alone in her grief. For all she knows that the Targaryen that would sit on throne could be anyone and that currently she's just a replacement for Daemon. Then in the 6 months leave we can see that the distance just grew and grew more, probably because it's a Targaryen nature to distance themselves in their grieving moments or maybe because Viserys and Daemon aren't the right persons when it comes to situations about their personal grief. When Rhaenyra tried to speak in council about sending dragon riders to triachy, Viserys's decision wasn't wrong but didn't bother to elaborate why sending dragon riders wasn't the right choice to her later on. He just said "you'll learn" to her which made her feel isolated. Viserys and Rhaenyra again had a chance to mend that relationship but Viserys again didn't explain to her that the one he most likely is going to marry isn't Laena but Alicent which just indicated he didn't put the realm's need but his own above everything else. It's not like her opinion matters in the king's matters but Viserys most likely knew the dynamics between both friends and that's also the reason why he stopped Alicent from telling Rhaenyra anything about their meetings. Viserys, Daemon and Alicent were the only people Rhaenyra could confide in about her inner turmoil and how she should handle the future situations but in that moment she felt betrayed with all of them. Rhaenyra didn't handle the situation for the next 3 years wisely being a loathing person when she should be gathering allies and Viserys's way of approach for conversations didn't help either. We saw it in the tourney the way Viserys said that "you might have that in common" about Jason Lannister's proposal. He should've handled these situations (about her having to marry and make alliances) in the same way he did later on by the end of episode 3. By accepting his flaws and reassuring her about her position. From then onwards it was purely Rhaenyra's fault for f*cking up with both Daemon and Criston when she should've been looking for a match from big houses and making alliances. Here Viserys should've either pass the title to Aegon logically seeing Rhaenyra's incompetence or at least punish her for her actions. Viserys told her the real prophecy only then which finally knocked some sense in her. However Viserys again chose Laenor, his nephew who is already rumoured about his gayness, just to appease his past mistake with House Velaryon. Now regarding Rhaenyra having 3 illegitimate children, I personally can't blame her because as it's mentioned, they tried but couldn't have any children together. However I do hold her accountable for not having 1 but freaking 3 illegitimate children. Here too Viserys never holds her accountable for her actions or passes down any type of inner punishment that others wouldn't know off. Viserys's problem is that he goes too lenient on his family and objects to the point that it stirs problems, be it with his children, his council or in political decision makings. He doesn't take actions when they should be due but takes them when it's past the mid term which instead of helping, could backfire on him such as him firing Otto. It doesn't matter if he fires Otto now when his daughter is already a Queen and mother of male heirs. Making Otto an official enemy in that moment is just cherry on top in digging his own grave. There's a lot I want to express that makes Viserys a bad father and king (in his decisions not as a person) but for now I can only explain his dynamics with Rhaenyra. If I start talking about his children with Alicent, his decisions in politics then it'll go too long.

@@Tooba-K123 Ok "I don't deny that Rhaenyra mostly causes her own problems but that doesn't mean Viserys didn't play a role in some of it." *I'm sorry but he doesn't, he definitly has a Role to play when it comes to Alicent and his sons problems for sure but when it comes to Rhaenyra, he doesn't any Role in it, he was just there to fixes her mess. You mentioned how he hurts her feelings a few times in the firsts episodes but if it was enough to be a bad father then everybody would be, You're right he did mess up at those moments but he always made up for it, always recognized his wrongs and fix things with her, even when he waver, he always defends Rhaenyra against Otto, Lanister and anybody who dares. He isn't the perfect father, but he was a good father for Rhaeny.* "Viserys and Rhaenyra again had a chance to mend that relationship but Viserys again didn't explain to her that the one he most likely is going to marry isn't Laena but Alicent" *Because Viserys himself didn't know if he was gonna Marry Alicent or that he liked her that much, he was struggling about weither he should remarry or not, not about who he should marry, he was fond of Alicent but didn't think about her that way, that's why he went to talk to Rhaenyra and basically asked the permission to remarry, he realised who he wanted at the last minute and decided to marry her instead on a whimp. Is it a good thing to do? NO, Did he messed up? yeah for sure but it wasn't like pointed it out? And like i said earlier he did make for it in the next episode even if took 3 years and let's not forget that this was also a set up by Alicent, she planned it so she could be chosen* "Here Viserys should've either pass the title to Aegon logically seeing Rhaenyra's incompetence or at least punish her for her actions. Viserys told her the real prophecy only then which finally knocked some sense in her." *I agree but to be fair, that mistakes could've still been fixed with discretion which it did (until Rhaeny messes up more later) and there was still room for her to grow while Aegon was still a child at the time. And technically he did punish her, she had the luxury to marry anybody she wanted , and he took that away from her and forced to marry his choice.* "However Viserys again chose Laenor, his nephew who is already rumoured about his gayness, just to appease his past mistake with House Velaryon" *That one is definitely on Rhaeny, As far as we know Laenor gayness was only known by 3 people at the time , his parents and Rhaeny. Even if it was known by more people it would've been only the people of Driftmark and they would've been shut down by the Velarions, not the people of Kingslanding and she didn't say anything to Viserys. That decision wasn't just to apease past mistake there were huges advantages to marry a velarion and their control of sea there is also the fact that choosing Aegon now would've put the house hightower closer to the throne and with Otto intention being clear we couldn't have that. Honestly that his best strategical move and he negociated very well.* "Here too Viserys never holds her accountable for her actions or passes down any type of inner punishment that others wouldn't know off." *Agreed, thought i don't think there was a way to punish her at that point, he definitely should've held her accountable at the first kid* i mostly agree with stance about him as a king, his best move was with the Velaryon, but because of Raeny he couldn't do anything in the end, because admitting, or even entertaining the idea of her children would've ruin the deal with them and ruin her. Keeping his promise to his daughter t'ill the end cost the kingdom

I strongly disagree with this as someone who loved most of the book liberties the show took this wasn’t a good one. The end of episode 9 makes no sense in so many ways. First Rhaenys killed hundreds of innocent people to just look cool and didn’t even end the war by killing Aegon so she simply killed people for no reason. They thought it looks cool so let’s do it even when it makes no sense. Also I wish Aegon had Sunfyre there like in the book so she couldn’t do that freely because Sunfyre would defend Aegon. So basically the series made Rhaenys a mass murdered for no reason except a scene that looks cool but just makes things more confusing.

You can’t blame a mother for the actions of her sons. Alicent went by things the right way therefore she is in the right. It doesn’t matter how pure hearted jace if his mother was irresponsible and reckless with having him. At the end of the day alicent had her babies with who she was meant to have them with. You can’t blame a parenting style on giving a child all of the power aegon was given. Being the kings son alone gets him whatever he wants for as long as the king lives. You can’t control or discipline someone like that. You can teach him as much good things as you want but when you’re off handling the 7 kingdoms he will do whatever his heart desires.
