Kristen, cardboard needs to be laid down in late fall. It helps with weed suppression, but it also improves the soil because earthworms LOVE to it. As they do so, they aerate the soil and their castings (worm poop) add black gold to your soil. Since it is later in the season, don’t do cardboard. Instead, add some compost into your existing soil. Plant whatever it is you wish to plant. Once your plants are about 3 inches tall and fairly sturdy, you can then place newspaper around the base of your plants, then add your mulch last. Wood chips make a great mulch. The newspaper and wood chips (or whatever natural mulch you choose) will break down over time and improve your soil. Next year you will repeat the process! Avid gardener of many years.

Kristen, newspaper is a better solution for your front beds. You can maneuver the paper around you plants and the benefit of paper is weed barrier, it brings all the worms to the paper working miracles for fertilizing your plants. Then top dress with what ever you want.

Make sure it’s the newsprint type of paper not the slick sale papers. After putting the newspaper down, then wet it down. This will help hold it in place. Add mulch over it. Then plant your flowers, or whatever. Of course make holes in the newspaper for your bulbs peeping thru. The only place we use cardboard, is in our vegetable garden. Only putting it down after we’ve planted. We put it around our veggie plants. As a weed barrier. It eventually breaks down. But wouldn’t think it would work well in your flower garden. My POV.

It’s the helmet for me!!!❤😂so sweet!!! As for the gardening….you just have to “jump in”, and you will learn….and you ARE jumping in! I’m so proud of you! We have years of experience, but many of our friends are MORE experienced….no matter! Last year was our first vegetable garden in more than 15 years. I am almost 65 years old….and I am still learning! For these many years, we lived in places that did not allow gardening…and now we CAN garden again!! Man, did we learn SO much this past year!! We had some big fails….and also learned what we wish to do differently this new year!! One thing I have always planted in our garden are tiny little ornamental white “pumpkins”. They are so fun to grow! Make a mound, and plant seeds all around on top of the mound. Water, water, water!! I thin them out a bit after the seeds have sprouted. After I harvest them in the fall, I use them for many different things. I adore filling baskets of all sizes to decorate our home! 😂We use them as hostess gifts, I paint them for Baby Shower favors….or paint them gold for our Thanksgiving table! (On and on!!) So…..that’s just an idea for you! Your home is just so beautiful!!!(By the way, should you ever decide to plant the ornamental pumpkins in your garden, their vines will want to “take over” your garden. Yet, by the time they do this….you are clearing out other things at harvest time. …so your garden is able to accommodate the growing vines! Thank you for your videos! I live about 1 hour away from you. We have a daughter who lives in Omaha…..so it is fun to have you be from our general” area!!❤ Praying for you and your family!

Ha ha,I always drill a hole somewhere in the the back of my bookcases. I then feed a normal length extension cord through the hole and plug it in behind the bookcase. ( because that’s where the outlet always ends up!) Then I never have to think about trying to pull it forward for that access once it’s full of books. I always like to have a tiny lamp with shade tucked amongst the books but I recently decided to fill one whole shelf with my antique blue glass bottles with twinkle lights behind them, easy peasy!(You know the hand blown ones that are the same color as antique mason jars but used to hold medicine and tonics) So pretty and so easy because I already had the extension cord peeking in.🤭

Have your husband plant some bushes in the front yard flower bed and then you can plant some annuals in front of them as the weather gets warmer there! Have him till the soil for you so that it will be easy for you to plant and the things you plant will grow easier. Add some peat moss, bone , vitamin B1 if needed. Ask someone knowledgeable at the nursery what you need for your area. ❤

This video was such a joy to watch ❤️😊. We’re having a “false” Spring here in Oklahoma also. We just had a glorious weekend with sunshine and low 70 temps. I love all the seasons but Autumn is my favorite with Spring coming in 2nd. Spring is invigorating and renewing, a time to refresh. I think of the olden times when homemakers would open up their homes and begin cleaning & refreshing their homes from being closed in for the long Winter. Winter briefly returns here for a few days this week and I’ll cherish the last of the cozy days but Im ready for the re-freshing of Spring and being outside before the heat of Summer is upon us. Homemaking is an important job and I love this quote by CS Lewis- Homemaking is surely in reality the most important work in the world. What do ships, railways, mines, cars, government, etc., exist for except that people may be fed, warmed, and safe in their own homes? The homemaker’s job is one for which all others exist. - C.S. Lewis

I love the exterior of your home. It has so much charm. As for the garden,, I think you need to get some larger anchor shrubs next to the house, eliminating the need to replace everything every year. Then you can plant your annuals in front for seasonal color throughout the year. I would put a large pot and shrub in the corner showing at 4:30 of this video. Then plant a taller large shrub, then you can add annuels around the rim each year to spill out. Then shrubs in the ground. Levels in a garden give it interest, rather than planting everything the same height. And continue the shrubs on the other side of the porch railing for rhythm and repetition. I was watching you scrub that crock pot... I always buy a 4 pack of crock pot liners at my Dollar Store. It is the best invention ever! And 2 packs will last me all year.!!!! Saves so much time and effort. Just toss it when the dinner is over. Also to me... what makes faux flowers look fake, is that they need to be cut at different levels also. Just plopping them in a vase gives them away. At levels you will be surprised how real they can appear, Fo me, fall is the coziest season of them all. Would love to have seen Rosie's video!

I never used cardboard in my garden. I use black plastic bags. Nothing fancy cleared away. Whatever dirt and mulch was on top of whatever and lay down all the plastic bags and then took skewers so I knew where I wanted to cut because it was either a hostas under there or or another plant or something. Lay your topsoil, lay your mulch and then go back to where all your skewers are. You know when you know make a little circle and an x in the plastic and rescue your plant or plant another plant. I have not had a problem. It's the way I have done this for 33 years absolutely no weeds

My friend is a licensed master gardener and she did my yard. So you don’t have a lot of weeds. The best thing to do is to take organic compost that you can buy at the garden center and mix it with all your dirt really really well get weeds and everything out ahead of time. Then you plant everything, and you make sure that you have 3 inches of mulch on top. She tells me because it will disintegrate some every fall, and every spring for me to add mulch. I have beautiful gardens and rarely have any weeds. If I do it’s just a few here and there and I can weed very quickly once a month. ❤

Paper instead of cardboard! You can easily plant through it to plant :)!! Then you probably will want to do a little dirt on top for weight then mulch. I have rubber mulch which some like and some don’t but I don’t have to replace it every year and it stays in place. I also only have shrubs (sunshine ligustrums) and then I put decorative pots around them in my beds with solar lights as well.

Hey Kristen, yes for flower beds newspaper is better. Cardboard is great in a vegetable garden in between rows. Glad you are feeling some warmer temps. I actually opened my windows for awhile this afternoon after church. We actually had a beautiful heavy snow shower yesterday here in the mountains of western North Carolina. It didn’t stick cause we’d had warm temps last week & the ground has finally warmed. However, it was beautiful! Can’t wait to see your upcoming changes. You are so blessed with those precious girls. I remember making pine cone feeders with my kids when they were little. Have a very blessed week. Ohhhh loved the word on idleness. Being retired now, I tend to be a little more idle than I should. The problem I had with newspaper.. my beds looked beautiful, covered with the paper, then mulched.. next morning, it looked like it had snowed, the paper had been shredded/chewed into millions of tiny pieces.. I picked and scooped what I could, then just raked the mulch back over, there went my weed barrier.. I like to put thinner cardboard pieces down.. held with rocks.. you can do that now..I now wait until after the pollen stops to mulch.

Your girls are so pretty and sweet. Loved the spring flowers. We are already in summer at 80 degrees and then back to 55 degrees the next week, but that is what living in central Texas is like. lol. Yummy looking bread.

You want to do Compost then cardboard then mulch. Look into chip drop if you need a lot of mulch for your yard. It's a truckload but free.

Kristen, You’re a beautiful mama and you’re also mothering the baby you’re carrying. Please show yourself the love, grace and mercy of your Heavenly Father. We all waste time. It is a precious commodity. Guilt isn’t the same thing as conviction. Take care of yourself as you take care of your marriage and sweet family.

Thank you for your explanation on idleness, rest, and laziness, I’m 72 year old woman who lives alone. This is very important to me to understand which one I’m experimenting at any given time. Am I being lazy or is my body trying to say “your tired”? I love to be in balance. 🥀take care, and thank you. Fresh followers always brings joy❤ plus, moving a few things around our homes, refreshes our minds (your busy now, I understand 🙏🏻)

We have had great success with “Knock Out Roses” in our front flower beds. We put down landscaping fabric over the entire bed areas that keeps weeds from starting (but lets water into the plants) around each plant bottom we cut a square of the fabric to make sure the flowers were properly protected but the bases could get plenty of sun, and then we put river stone over everything. It looks great and we do not need to replace it every year like mulch. It is very important to grade/slope your landscaping away from the house so the water flows away from the foundation.

Hi Kristin, I really enjoy your videos. Your children are so sweet and you are all just adorable! God has been speaking to me as well about idleness. I will be turning 64 next month, yikes! It's great you are doing a you tube channel and it's so wonderful to read Scriptures. BYW, you can get crockpot liners and they make clean up a snap. That was so cute watching your girls, it brings tears to my eyes, they grow up so fast.

Hello Kristen, thank you so much for sharing your home and your sweet girls. so cute by the way, also that part when you cleaned up the water and threw the towel over your shoulder oh my girl that was Awesome. it made me laugh so hard it made my day. because women today go through so much in life and when people hurt our feeling it's not cool you know, but it reminded me to not care about what people say just thank god for the little things in life. get some rest and the bread is so cute. God bless your sweet family.🥰😇🌿🌺🌼🪴🖼

I don't know if you have ever tried those crockpot liners or not, but they work great and you don't have to do all that soaking and scrubbing to get it clean. If I use the crockpot , I use one of those liners.
