This is one of my favorite videos of all time for sure . Your energy is infectious and filled with light . You taught me a lot about one of my favorite creatures too . Thanks for telling me about them not touching the nectar after the rain . So after hearing this , and knowing how we’re having a LOT OF RAIN here ATM, I decided to make my nectar super strong , and not dilute it as much as usual . This way , if and when the rain comes, it’ll still be enjoyable for them . At least I hope so anyway .

The feeders that you have behind you in the window from Walmart have been the best I’ve ever used. They are cheap and come completely apart to clean. I have no problems with bees or them leaking like the other feeders I’ve ever used. I’ve used the ones that have tiny holes but they attract the tiny bees and they drown in the water almost as soon as I put them out. But I have filed them down a little bit.

Robbie I live in the PNW in WA State and Anna’s Hummingbirds stay here all year, even in the snow!! The nectar will freeze at 27 degrees so it needs to be brought in or a heater of some type used to keep it from freezing. Most people don’t know that so they have always taken their feeders down, but are starting to learn that they stay and are keeping them up. 🥰

This is the 3rd time I've watched this video!😍 our feeding season is soon coming to an end here in northern Ontario Canada... so I'm told that I will have to remove my hummingbird feeders to encourage them to start flying south before the cold temps arrive... 😔 I'm thinking their instincts will automatically tell them when to leave .. They are so smart!! 💕🍃⚘🍃

I'm worried if they should stay when the snow comes. One video said to replace the frozen feeder with a spare one kept warm inside. I heard a story about a nice man who drove the hummingbird south when it got stranded at his feeder in the winter. It's getting cold here in Winnipeg and I hope not to find dead hummers because they stayed because of my feeder. I'm hoping their instinct will get them going...I think they'll go once the insect food diminishes.

Stop ants by using a ring of petroleum jelly on the shepherd's hook "Before" the curve of the large bend. The reason I said before the bend, is in case a bird sets on the hook it won't get it on them! ROBIN thank you for all your work on these "little buzzards" you have answered a million questions for me. One in particular was the mold, it was driving me batty thinking I didn't clean good enough. Now I know! Thank you for the heads up on the rain guard, I live in central Florida with lots of liquid sunshine.

Thanks for a great video, Robbie. I started with three hummers and now have four. I make a double recipe and keep in a large glass pitcher and refresh the nectar every several days, especially during the hot days. Just use water and cane sugar - period. People think they are giving the birds a treat in giving something other than sugar water. No additional ingredients other than cane sugar and water. If you want to do something special for them, plant some yummy flowers.. I love the round fountain. I did buy some small Walmart feeders and several ones from the Dollar Tree. Cool

Hummingbirds must love California. I only get about 4 each year in IL. I use reversed osmosis filtered water what we drink. I know u said no need, but want to. One thing I haven’t heard you talk about is to change the sugar water frequently when temp is over 80°. The sugar wster may not last all day when temp so warm. So hummers don’t eat ants, ugh? My granddaughter and I made your idea of a splash pad fountain with Walmart plastic plate. It’s been 1 month but can’t get birds to use it. It has a little fountain that bubbles over flat draining plate. On one end has soft rocks w a pastel ceramic mermaid. Very cute (of course, they don’t care). I just don’t have all the birds u have. Looks like I have your same feeder.

I’m constantly putting in different types of flowers. Last year I started catering to the bees and especially butterflies I added butterfly bushes and milkweed. This year I concentrated on hummingbirds. I just want to do what I can to help and attract the wildlife to my property to enjoy! Thank you Robbie for all the content you put out I have learned a lot and enjoyed as well! I love seeing Kitty… thank you for loving wildlife! You have such a kind heart 💜

I just wanted to say I live in Charlotte Tennessee and this is the first year that we decided to go all out on the hummingbirds, and they have hit us like gangbusters. As far as following you around I know that’s true because all I have to do is go outside and I call for them I have a certain whistle that I use all the time and they come to it they also hear me holler at them by hummingbirds nobody believes me until I tried it and it happened. They are very smart and they are definitely territorial we had a young boy that would dart in and out of a tree every time one of the other hummingbirds would come along on his tulip style feeder and as soon as someone would get close he would dart out chasing away and then he would dart back into his hole and watch and it was the funniest thing he did it for hours one night and then finally went to a different feeder. They are beautiful they are precious and I love them ❤️. Going to make a water fountain for them sometime this week and also I am going to try a few different ways of making new feeders out of glass Bottles. I find the not so big feeders are much easier to clean and maintain than the much larger feeders. Plus they all seem to like the individual types I put out.

I love your moat! I made mine with the plastic top of a clear spray 'paint' using the same technique you did. WHERE did you get those plastic cups? I also love your hummer bath. I 'bathed' them the old fashioned way, spray from the hose. LOL Anyway, we even fed them when we went camping. My motto was: Have hummer feeder will travel. I have neighbors who used multi colored solutions in different feeders. And I did slip everyone a little note about colored solution. I was brave back then! LOL As you mentioned the makers of some of this stuff are being recommended by certain groups. That's because organizations receive donations from the manufacturers. When I first started feeding them my only excuse was I didn't know any better. A couple of years in I tried an experiment with 3 feeders. One had the red store bought red sugar, the 2nd one a little of the store bought stuff and the 3rd plain sugar water. Guess which feeder they preferred? Actually it was the ONLY feeder they used. There is no reason to dye sugar water or buy expensive store bought red sugar for hummingbirds, that red dyed sugar contains CHEMICALS to keep it from SPOILING. Most who use this stuff because they don't have to CLEAN their feeders very often. If a person can't be bothered to keep feeders clean then maybe they shouldn't be feeding hummingbirds IMHO. I tried to find one of the books I have for about half an hour or so that was written by a man who had fed red dyed solution and was losing birds. I wanted to quote from the book but I can't find it now. :( Although I always kept it on the top shelf of my desk we had to move everything when new windows were installed. I don't remember if you touched on it or not but keep spiders and praying mantises and a few other critters away from feeders. They will kill and eat hummers.

Robbie, I live in North Carolina and have one large feeder and a smaller one. I was having a BIG problem with bees and huge rusty hornets with yellow abdomens on the smaller feeder. It has a "bee guard" inside the flower. The bees would just sit in the flowers and drink right through the bee guard. And wouldn't move when a hummer would come to drink. The hornets would double team the hummers and chase them away from the feeder. And would come at me when I got near the feeder. One did sting me once. I read on some website that you could put extra virgin olive oil on the feeder to repell them. That worked a little, but not great. What did work is putting sugar water in a container, on a table, approximately 10 feet away from the feeder. That worked really well. A few bees, wasps & those rusty hornets would go back to the feeder. So periodically I have had to take a Q-tip and reapply the olive oil. But as time passed there's been more and more bees, wasps & hornets going to their container, and fewer hanging around my hummingbird feeder. No hornets chasing the hummers away. AND I didn't have to kill any pollinators. A win/win.

We put up a hummingbird feeder last fall. It didn't take long for about 4 or 5 hummingbirds to regularly visit it. But this spring a bully has come along and won't let any of the others feed from it. We only have the one deck where we could put hummingbird feeders, so multiples would only be in the same area. I don't know how to either get rid of the bully, or make him stop being so aggressive to the others. Any ideas? ETA - that we tried a 2nd feeder, but the bully took over both of them.

I only had a few birds until I increased the mix to 40% sugar, they quit fighting and become content to enjoy. Now I have 50-75, they consume about 50 oz of nectar each day. The feeders are always crowded. They empty a feeder in 1-3 days (i have 3 feeders) and I rinse it in very hot water 3 times, no soap and only bleach if spoiled and cloudy, and fill the feeder with very hot tap water and let it sit until cool then drain and dry the feeder until needed again. I have spare feeders so some are always clean and ready. The best location i found so far is near the Yew bushes, they disappear into the bushes and rest. Indiana location.

Hey Robbie,, I've been watching your vids now for about 3 months and love them. I am here in south TX in a little town about an hour north of Corpus Chrisiti. I get hummers here at my place year round and so enjoy watching them come to our feeders. Morning coffee on the deck with the little ones and an ice cold beer in the late afternoon. I have a question for you, I noticed that the males very rarely if ever land on the feeders while they are feeding ,but the females always land, any idea why that is? Have not been able to find anything in my research on it. We have been having some very hot temps here in South Tx this summer, highs to 100 and above, so i change out my nectar about every 4 days and wash and rinse the feeders with very hot water to keep them clean. Oh yeah I will be attending the Hummingbird festival this Sept in Rock Port TX this year and wonder have you ever been to any in your area? Thanks for the great Hummer vids.

Im not robby but i hope this helps: Hummingbird Nectar Recipe Please make your own hummingbird nectar 4 Cups of Boiled Water 1 Cup White Granulated Sugar Do not use raw or organic sugar, it contains iron Bring water to a boil, remove from heat, add sugar, stir very well & let cool. DO NOT use RED DYE, or store bought nectar. Please clean containers every 1-3 days. Do not add anything else. **Important Hummingbird Information: On hot or cold days, to maintain feeders, fill with less, more often. 70°-84°F (21°-28°C)....Clean every 3 days 85°-87°F (29°-30°C)....Clean every 2 days 88°-99°F (31°-37°C)....Clean every single day Nectar can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. IMPORTANT: Never let your feeder become cloudy or moldy, bacteria and mold will kill hummings, Always keep clean. Problem with Ants: Use an ant moat filled with water only. Never use Vaseline or oil based products on or around the feeder, ground or hooks. Feeding hummingbirds is a big responsibilty. If you don't have time to keep your feeders clean and fresh, just plant flowers. Hummingbird safety is always the first priority.

I read about not getting any hummingbirds to your feeders being disappointed... That it's the "rule of twos" with hummingbirds: It could be 2 minutes, 2 hours, 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months before they discover your feeder. Mine hung outside for 2 weeks and my first two batches of sugar water I had to throw out. I also made the mistake of making a big gallon jug of nectar to sit in my refrigerator, but they didn't like that one They wanted it fresh! I am glad to hear that I don't necessarily have to boil the water I have read you should boil your water to get the chlorine or impurities out. I drink my water straight out of the tap it tastes delicious to me! So good to know that I could possibly quit doing that particular step.

Ok, so I found 2 humming bird eggs in a hanging basket outside, in a tree. A basket have been taken out of the tree so the tree could be trimmed up. A friend was doing it for me, so I never saw the eggs. When I put the plant back in the tree is when I first noticed them. Not knowing there were hummingbirds around here, and being a crafter, I thought they little white beads, so took them out to put in the house. I didn't pot the plant, and kids live around the neighborhood. Before I even made it to the house it dawned on me what they were. Knowing this, I now realize that there are little humming birds around here. We live on the East Coast of Florida, in Daytona Beach. We get hurricanes during this time of year, and for the next several months. I do have deep eaves around the house, and a covered, screened porch. I am now growing vegetables, as well as flowers and houseplants, outside. We have a very tight space but I try to fit in what we need. Everything is organic. I collect rain water. Our city water has chlorine in it so I only use it on things that aren't animal or plant related, and won't drink it. There are a lot of feral cats close by, and I have been catching them up to have them fixed and Animal Control releases them back out when they bring the cats back. My question is, is it safe for me to try to feed the humming birds at my house? I feel so badly for them now, but I fear the cats that will love them, differently than I do.

I found your site just recently and I really enjoy it I thank you very informative and I enjoy your views of the birds and you're in depth explanations of how to feed and not to feed the birds and what they like and what they don't like even the bees I appreciate that very much I am a sort of new at doing bird feeding more intently you know I did used to do just here and there but I really like watching the birds since I just came disabled I do so more even now and would appreciate even more information on how to make a beautiful place for my birds I call my friends my boyfriend you seems and people's friends but anyway and more animal friends I just love them they're just precious as can be and I had last couple years I had a nest in my yard paper newspaper box and they built their nest there because the squirrel hadn't built the whole on the top of the box and gotten Down in the Hole but the birds made a mess there and when it rained real hard it washed a couple of the babies out after they were born but and they died but the other one survived and then they come back it seems like every year and anyway that was a real treat I like to go and go on the walks where they have the accessibility for wheelchair people to go and watch it the birds and count the birds to the Audubon Society I think also that they count them every year I believe in February and in another another time of the year and Report how many birds are in are like our backyard and we keep track of the migration like this year we have an early migration of geese for example my name is Diana but I go buddy and feel free to address me either way I appreciate you and God bless you!

It's funny because someone mentioned maybe you, that they don't really need us because they've been doing what comes natural to them for hundreds of years. My bird that comes through they always hit my garden flowers first and then they find the feeder even my little pet bully bird makes his way through the backyard, - I always say he's eating his fruits and vegetables first and then he comes to the feeder. So I'm always glad to see them eating off the flowers in the yard first before they even think about coming to the theater. That's why I've planted everything in my yard to either attract birds bees or butterflies.

My hummingbirds don’t like sharing the feeder like yours. I placed a second feeder in my yard but I don’t get a lot of action from this feeder. I see you have a ton of feeders in your yard. Would you recommend I get more feeders? Thanks!

Ramona Portillo-Bienemann you know I’ve noticed the same thing with my feeders. Where I used to live there weren’t very many trees and it had open fields so I had so many I couldn’t keep count! But at my new house I have more trees so I’m thinking it has to be because they aren’t finding them as easy as they did at the other house. I’m thinking of putting one out where theres an open space in my yard and hopefully they will come to it and see the others. Because I never had any fighting over feeders like I do here.

I have 3 feeders on individual shepherds hooks. I have 2 on a bigger one. Have several small birds and one larger one. It chases off the others. If it is somewhere else they feed 1 or 2 at a time. Is the big one a mom keeping others from nest. Or is it a Male being controlling...? Thanks.

do you know all the benefits of dried moringa leaf powder? I bet if you place some in water and leave out for them, I bet they hit it the most for the nutrients, vitamins and amino acids. Not sure of the ratio, maybe have to play with it, but they are smart and know the Tree of Life on earth that is The Moringa Tree Much Love and God Bless You

Hi Robbie. I have 3 hummingbird feeders in different areas and only 3 hummingbirds, but they fight over the feeders. How can I get them to stop. No matter where I move the feeders. I think there are 2 females and 1 male

I have had that same problem so I'm adding more feeders~ they still fight but it seems a bit better. They are very territorial so I'm adding some feeders to the front yard now, as well.

It’s not necessary but it’s to keep the sugar water from fermenting so quickly (only a day if heat reaches above 86F)
