I came to know them late - they had already recorded 3 albums. I found two of them in a thrift store, and couldn't believe what I was hearing. That was in the late 90's. My love for them is undiminished.

Really, I can' t believe, because in my language (Croatian) kulad = koled. I can't believe how similar our languages are. Greetings from Croatia

Staggering beauty- thank you for sharing this. Here's a synopsis: Milka’s mother boasted about her: “She is so industrious, and very stylish too!” Milka’s fame spread all the way to Istanbul to the marketplace. When Marko the merchant heard about her, he loaded his boat with silk, silver thread and gold. When Milka stepped aboard to buy silk, Marko battened down the hatches and carried off beautiful Milka. Although these words do not reflect a Christmas message, every refrain says “oh, Christmas singers, my Christmas singers”
@kdraviaBG11 жыл бұрын
Обикновено в коледарските песни се пее 'Коладе". This is typical for the Christmas's songs. Christmas = Коледа. Куладе е диалектно произношение.

I literally listen to this video on repeat every day. The male voice singing the solo parts is so beautiful.
I feel a beautiful athmosphere in the music something traditional I like the organisation of the voices unlike my town's traditional songs they are really not organised so sometimes it's not nice to hear! I wish they did the same as those songs.

Can anyone tell me who the soloist in the beginning might be? Is it a female alto or a male soloist? Either way it's a stunning and unique voice.
@yseult3398 жыл бұрын
+lamentofhorde Hi! I'm not sure whether you'll see this, but in the liner notes of "Ritual", the Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares album on which this song appears, the song is described as being performed "with male vocals." In the credits for the album, the guest male vocalists are named as Daniel Spassov and Vladimir Kouzov. I agree, they are wonderful, and I hope this is helpful!

Doesn't sound like it's from this planet.
@NelsonClick7 жыл бұрын
LOL. I agree because that was my first reaction. I was so curious I did some research. It's definitely not from our "Western World" planet but surprisingly not too far. Western culture as we know it came from a mix of two streams: Greco-Roman and Judeo Christian beliefs and philosophies. This music is from the much older Greco-Roman side.
@ke2delight7 жыл бұрын
First of all this music and the Bulgarians have nothing to do with the Greco-Roman culture. They came from Asis in the 7th century and established 3 kingdoms at the same time. All 3 with the same name - Bulgaria. In the territory of Europe Bulgaria has existed for 13 centuries, and a lot longer in Asia. The original alphabet of the bulgarians is similar to the celtic alphabet, you know the one that looks like chinese. Also the Celts and the Bulgars have the bagpipe as a national instrument, yes the only two countries in Europe that are in the opposite corners from each other that share that much in common. I personally get goosebumps from watching this video! Some of the names and descriptions have been translated very well and are the same we have been using for a very long time. I was born in the city of Sofia that is 7000 years old, the second oldest settlement in Europe. They are very few countries in Europe who have their own language and alphabet and only two countries who have given an alphabet that is still in use. All slavic countries are using the bulgarian alphabet. I think the other one is the Latin alphabet from the Romans and is kind of dead, you know. Guess who settled in the heart of the Roman empire and never left, never changed its name or language? If you guessed a population that was never conquered by Alexander the Great you guessed it right. Direct descendents of the clan Dulo and Attila the Hun, welcome to Bulgaria!

Marko kidnapped beautiful Milka in the end. As Croatian speaker, and probably any Balkan Slav language speaker you can understand the lyrics. Only the meaning of the word kulade=koledo in our language, isn't clear to me.

kulade le = obryshtenie kym chovek na Bugarski ezik. Obiknoveno se polzva po kolednite praznici - ot tam idva i imeto: koleda - koledar - kolade - kulade. Bi trebvalo da e sushtoto na Makedonski. Edna kultura s mnogo obshti pesni i tradicii.

The story is this: - Milka (female name) spread her beauty all the way to Carigrad, all the way to muslim church, they offered for her gold, silver and wool, she refused and was imprisoned then her loved one Marko saved her. Even this is probably not very accurate but it so hard to understand everything even for me ;)
