Beautiful condition! That was the amp I lusted after when i was in my early teens. Managed to get hold of the model below it , the Sa-8800 amplifier and the Tx-9800 Tuner, both for £300 a couple of years ago. The amp was sold as not working, had a friend replace the relay and the power transformer with a used original and he only charged for parts. the amp is away getting a full service and a few faults fixing. Will be glad to get it back. The chap that is working on it was quite impressed by the design and build quality of it, as he hadn't worked on one before.

It’s good to see old classics like the Pioneer SA amp getting a once over, and also interesting to see the old componentry in its original state. Also nice to see the older gear that’s still out there and in service. Great video Mike !

Watching your Audiolab 8000A walk through a while ago, prompted me to get mine serviced and upgraded. All told, it cost me what I paid for the amp when I bought it new, but it was so worthwhile. So thanks to you, I have the amp running better than new. Always enjoy your videos.

Awesome to see that you made a video again. I have been doing record player repairs for years and I am slowly getting into amplifier repairs. Currently working on a Luxman amp. For my filming I 3D printed a holder for my phone that bolts on to a standard Ikea desk lamp. I find it works much easier since you can work with both hands. Let me know if you want one as well. I can ship it to you free of charge since your videos helped me a lot! :)

Good day Mate, This a wild beast.....amazing sound, lucky to have one, just got it restored, mate can you advice the fluorescent lights are dim all the time, need the original brightness any help, for spares such as front panel knobs need 5 for the up and down switches....appreciate your help and thank you for the detailed video..thank you very much.
@LiquidAudio Жыл бұрын
Hi Ashok, glad you enjoyed the vid! Fluorescent displays do dim over time, but drive ciruit issues can also cause this. As with all such issues, voltages must be checked, then associated parts, before writing off the display. Even then, vacuum displays can sometimes be revived, details on this can be found elsewhere. I don't offer retail parts sales so unfortunately I cannot assist with parts unless equipment comes to us for service.

I watched this after a Techmoan video where he just has royalty-free music in various forms (i.e. he burned himself a CD, tape, SD card etc.) so that viewers can hear the item. Just a suggestion to help highlight the value of a service/upgrade. Greetings from the UK!

Great suggestion, I've also used music from a band I was in previously so maybe I'll use that again - can't copyright strike myself!

Hello everyone, I kindly ask for a sincere and honest help: I am undecided on the purchase of the 9800 or 8800 model. I have read various negative reviews on the 9800, while there are few reviews on the 8800 model. I kindly ask which one you recommend between the two models. the 8800 model would cost me 650 €, the 9800 model would cost me 1200 €. both models have bright displays. Thank you so much!!

How does this sound compared to today's and 1990's mega power amps?
@LiquidAudio6 ай бұрын
Depends on what you mean by mega power amps. If you really mean premium dedicated power amplifiers like a Krell KSA-150 or Accuphase P-500L for example, they are in a completely different league and the comparison is not a good one. If you compare like for like though, and look at modern integrated amplifiers, I would take a beauty like this over any new gear.

I understand and many folks share this view. My customer has several other pieces including the CTF-1250 and all need service. This all adds up, so this is his first step and he will likely have more work done over time.

Prices vary according to condition, service history and market factors. Do some research on sold items in eBay and elsewhere online. Rather than selling it, consider keeping this rare and irreplaceable gem!

I’m looking to spend about £100 on an amp, I’ve seen a S8-7800 for sale for about that. Would you recommend it for sound quality (I won’t be able to afford a service -not yet anyway) over something of a similar value that’s newer?
@LiquidAudio Жыл бұрын
To be able to get one of the classics for that money is incredible. You really can't get much with such a limited budget as a general rule. You also need to allocate money for maintenance.

I'm binge watching your vids and here's another one the old man still has stored in his former home office. I don't know why dad bought so much stereo equipment but he was a hell of a hoarder and now I have to somehow pack it all up and transport it to my back sound room. Funnily enough our two sons aged 29 & 31 have NO idea what these relics even do! How tragic to be born in the 90's because by year 2000 it all started going MP3 rubbish. How fortunate we are to have experienced the "golden" years! Cheers.@@LiquidAudio

@@theaustralianconundrum Sounds like your Dad had great taste in hi-fi gear!

I believe he did.Thank you! The sad part is now as he's passed 90 his hearing is almost zero and he's legally blind. It's one heck of a collection nonetheless. Still. It will be taken good care of cosmetically however some components are starting to fail purely from lack of use given their age. Have a top week mate. @@LiquidAudio

is it possible to fix the display if it is dimly lit? Pioneer sa 9800
@LiquidAudio3 жыл бұрын
Depends of the cause but in some cases, like this unit here, it can be considerably improved.
@TomKappeln3 жыл бұрын
Yes. The heater voltage from the display has to be turned up for some minutes, and mostly the display looks like new. The heater wires from the display are normaly NOT glowing visible, when they come slightly visible glowing (Dark Red) in a not to good lighted room, that is what brings the display back to live. Sorry for my bad english, German guy here.
