Beautiful Saxon Church Has Pipe Organ From 1926 - Boogie Woogie Must Be Played - New Church Quest.

This is the beautiful St. Mary with St. Leonard Original Saxon Church dating back to around 1100 years ago. This is The Parish church of Broomfield. Please check the Church Website for more specific details. www.stmarybroom...
Revd. Carolyn Tibbott and Church Warden, Andy Mussell were kind enough to show me around and let me play the famous St. Mary with St. Leonard's 1926 Pipe Organ. The Organ is in need of repair but we managed to play some Boogie Woogie on the old Pipe Organ before she goes in for repair.

Take a few hours to understand the way a pipe organ operates and what the stops mean. For a start the stops on the left operate the top manual called the swell and the stops on the right operates the lower manual calld the great. The great contains the more powerful stops and the stops on the swell can be made louder or softer by means of the swell pedal. The way you just pulled out the stops without looking at them is just plain wrong. And as for playing a melody on the swell and chords on the great .....any organist knows this is the reverse of normal practice. If you had taken time to look for a swell to great stop you could transfer the sounds from the swell down to the great as well. You just made a mockery of what is a fine instrument even before restoration, and it is a travesty you were allowed anywhere near it.

Bravo! You will get use to the organ Pedalboard in no time : ) Next time you might listen to each stop, and you will notice that some sets of pipe are a lot quieter & would be drowned out by the louder stops. I hope you find another pipe organ on your journey!! Don't listen to the pipe organ snobs ; )

Good evening Philip Baldwin. Thank you for your comment and I've taken what you have said on board. It's useful to me to have 'constructive criticism' old boy. I'm mainly a pianist but do play Hammond organ too. As regards pipe organs, well I have played a few in the past, over the years but admittedly I'm not as 'clued up' on pipe organs as I am Pianos and Hammond organs. It's good to read your detailed thoughts though Philip. You clearly know your organs. I have an idea for a future video that I could possibly make for my KZbin Channel - Do you know of any Churches that have a pipe organ that I could play and you could come with me and 'show me the ropes' as it were on how to play the Church Organ? This could potentially make a very good and educational KZbin Video with your expertise. You could explain what all the stops do and how it all works etc and we could end up playing a couple of Hymns on the pipe organ. It would also help other future pipe organ enthusiasts/ players to know how pipe organs work and how they should be played. Let me know your thoughts. Greetings Philip! My curiosity was piqued reading your detailed commentary... and, so, I share with you a story about JS Bach. Hopefully, you are inclined to agree that this particular composer was an accomplished organ player. JS Bach was also a rather well-known organ tester. His practice was to start off by playing each new instrument with all the stops pulled out!! Hmmmm... go figure!! :) :) Please keep in mind, this is just a tidbit story heard on NPR (National Public Radio); they try to be factual. My mother was asked to stand in for a day for Sunday service and play the piano. Now, she played with spunk and really got into her playing. First song was "as the Saint come marching in". Us 4 kids were just singing with vigor, mom dolled it up so, the people kept flipping pages trying to find the song she was playing. They loved it once they got it figured it out. Wanted her back every sunday, everyone was grinning ear to ear. Almost the same as his playing. She could belt out a tune. Dang I miss her

My late wife always dreamed of being able to play the piano. She had some lessons as a child but her parents could not afford for her to continue through her grades. In her late 40's both her parents died and with a small legacy she purchased a piano and started having lessons again. It gave her great joy and pleasure. She practiced everyday and eventually started to take her grades again. She invested in another beautiful piano and that enabled her to progress further. She was not a natural musician and had to work hard to achieve her goals. Sadly she passed away much too young. She left her piano to our grandson and he too may take up and play one day. He is only five and has few if any memories of his paternal Grandma. She would have loved your playing Terry and the fact you give so much joy through music. Thank you for sharing your gift with us. Truly inspiring.

What a sweet, inspiring story. Out of six grandchildren, my son was the one left his grandmother’s expensive, special edition piano, because, at 33, he was the only one who still played. Now in his fifties, he still loves to sit down at it. What a gift for your grandson. I hope he enjoys piano lessons when he starts. The right teacher makes a huge difference, not overly strict or serious. A good teacher makes learning enjoyable.

I grew up in the Baptist Church here in the midwestern US. My dad was Assistant Pastor, and Mom played organ or piano (whichever was needed) every Sunday. I so miss the great old hymns! Terry, in 1926, my grandfather (dad’s father) was a pipe organ tuner living in Detroit, Michigan. He’s from Québec, but there was a lot of work in Detroit at the time. He had perfect pitch and used one tuning fork, an A440, which I am the proud possessor of said tuning fork. Keep entertaining the masses. Obviously the Lord was happy because the power had not been cut.

The church is beautiful inside and out. I love the stain glass and the last supper scene. Of course Terry, your playing on the piano of the song, "How Great Thou Art," was outstanding!!! I always love to hear a pipe organ. I didn't recognize the first song, but I do know "Amazing Grace." Both were magnificent! Thank you for sharing.
