Blue to red, why does this happen?
NAME OUR BLACK CAT IN THE COMMENTS.

If you were to look up at the sky on a clear day, you will notice the sun is yellowish., (Don’t look directly at the sun peepz) and the sky blue. But as the sun lowers on the horizon, the colour of the sun and the sky can change dramatically to red, orange and yellow hues. But why does this happen?
The light from the sun is white, but actually consists of the seven coloured waves, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. If we were to look at the sun from space it would always appear white, but on earth the atmosphere scatters some of the light waves coming from it. This is called Rayleigh scattering and affects what colour we perceive the sky and sun as.
The waves at the red end of the spectrum are longer and at the blue end shorter. This means blue waves are more likely to hit particles in the atmosphere and scatter, hence why during the day we see the sky as blue. The sun will appear yellowish as the combination of the colour wavelengths that make it through easier, like red and green that combine to make yellow light. At high noon the sun may also appear white, as the white light coming directly from the sun has the least distance to travel through the atmosphere and less chance to bounce of particles.
We explain why the sky is blue in detail in another video you can find in the description below and at the end of this video. (Why is the sky blue).
As the sun sets in our sky the light has a longer distance to travel through the atmosphere. The blue light starts scattering so much that the light does not end up reaching us. The light in the yellow, orange and red wavelengths have more chances to scatter on the slightly longer journey whilst still making it through to our eyes.
The lower the sunset the more dominant longer wavelengths will become. This is why the colours of sunsets get deeper as the sunsets more on the horizon, turning from yellow, into orange and finally, mainly just red hues.

Just a slight correction at 1:18. The light is not really white light. It’s more accurate to say .... Earth's atmosphere acts as a light filter by scattering lights of certain wavelengths more and scattering some less. This phenomenon is due to refraction. In the afternoon, the Sun would appear white since there isn't much scattering. Thank you

Your channel is so cool! I find a bit irritating the commentary about the video of the color of the sky (which is pretty cool too,) I may have preferred a small link somewhere. I hope your channel keeps growing!!! Reminds me of Kurzgesagt. I think we need a lot more quality content like this in our lives

It's a fun phenomenon! It's also a novel by Verne which was made into a very nice and very loose and improvisatory adaptation by Eric Rohmer. But you might want to look into diffraction gratings and also colours on bubbles and oil spills after that, while you are doing an optics series.
@BeautifulScience
@BeautifulScience 5 жыл бұрын
I actually have a list of video ideas and the oil spill one is actually one I already had down as an idea, (great minds ay). I have a few more optic and space related ones written up but might give this a whirl. Or even better, if you have script writing skills then get involved and drop me an email!

@BeautifulScience

I think it is even more than that like 95million I think right? Obviously it does not set in reality but to us and our perspective it looks like it does of course, hope that makes sense? 😊

Question... How is "sun setting" even possible if you dont even take Flat Earth theory. Technically from a grand scale the sun never sets if the Earth is truly flat? and hence would leave the lingo of "some light" in the sky... not reffering to stars or the moon, im talking about some VISIBLE light that would brighten black.. you know... the negative spectrum? The fact also points that when you referring to "shorter" and "longer" light spectrum... it has NOTHING to do with the colors (which Is why I came on this pathetic 5th grader lecture). How does your position truly affect how you see light? If the colors from behind to front (N-S) and side to side (E-W) all have a different visible color that could range.. I again couldnt possible see the structure in how light ACTUALLY is "bending" unless there is a glass or some artificial doom (COUGH OPERATION FISH EYE'S) which still wouldnt be plausible knowing that AGAIN... THE EARTH CURVATURE ISNT REAL WHEN U GET MORE ADVANCE TECHNOLOGY TO "SCOPE" THE VIEW. ERGO.... HOW LIGHT "BEND" IF ITS CONSTANTLY AROUND US 24/7? Elon Musk or Clinton Snuff raffle. What ever you wanna call me just give me your god dam money or kill me.
