-------------------------------------------
There are 80 to 100 billion neurons in a human brain, and every single one of them can form thousands of connections with other neurons, leading to a complex network of hundreds of trillions of synapses that enable brain cells to communicate with each other.
Yet, despite the best efforts and findings of modern neuroscience, the true functioning of our mind remains one of the greatest and most fascinating mysteries. We know a lot about how our brain helps us stay alive, communicate, and perceive the world around us. But this knowledge, however brilliant, continues to change at an extraordinary pace and represents only a tip of a gigantic iceberg whose full beauty is hiding well from our sight.
Is it then preposterous to consider that something as trivial as focusing our mind and breathing steadily for a short time every day could have a profound effect on our well-being? Is it in our power at all to make changes to our own brain?
Neuroscientists have been studying the effects of mindfulness techniques on our brains, with some pretty compelling results. The introduction of Magnetic Resonance Imagining (MRI) into clinical practice in the 1980s has resulted in substantial scientific advancement. Since then, researchers have been able to measure the activity and changes in the individual parts of the brain in humans.
Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School, uses the MRI technology to look at very fine, detailed brain structures and see what is happening to the brain while a person is performing a certain task, including yoga and meditation.
According to her own words, Lazar herself used to be sceptical about the lofty claims her yoga teacher had made about the emotional benefits of meditations she should have expected to experience. When after attending several classes, she indeed felt calmer, happier, and more compassionate, she decided to re-focus her research on the changes in the brain’s physical structure as a result of meditation practice.
CAN MEDITATION GENUINELY CHANGE BRAIN STRUCTURE?
For her second study, she engaged people who had never meditated before and put them through a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction training program, where they took a weekly class and were told to perform mindfulness exercises, including body scan, mindful yoga, and sitting meditation, every day for 30 to 40 minutes. Lazar wanted to test the participants for positive effects of mindfulness meditation on their psychological well-being and alleviating symptoms of various disorders such as anxiety, depression, eating disorder, insomnia, or chronic pain.
After eight weeks, she found out that the brain volume increased in four regions, from which the most relevant were:
HIPPOCAMPUS: a seahorse-shaped structure responsible for learning, storage of memories, spatial orientation, and regulation of emotions.
TEMPOROPARIETAL JUNCTION: the area where temporal and parietal lobes meet and which is responsible for empathy and compassion.
On the other hand, the one area whose brain volume decreased was the AMYGDALA: an almond-shaped structure responsible for triggering the fight-or-flight response as a reaction to a threat, whether real or only perceived.
Here, the decrease in gray matter correlated with changes in the levels of stress. The smaller their amygdala became, the less stressed people felt, even though their external environment remained the same. It proved that the change in amygdala reflected the change in the people’s reactions to their environment, not in the environment itself.

Imagine your brain as that person who loves you but never gets to spend time with you. When you finally sit down and spend time with them, they are ecstatic and want to share everything they're thinking because they're afraid they won't get the chance to do it again. After many many meditation sessions, this loving person begins to realize that you care and aren't going anywhere and will keep spending time with them. So they calm down and quiet down and eventually become reintegrated and whole with your being.

I started to meditate about 9 months ago and I do it everyday, at least 15 min by day. During this hole time I could reduce significantly to bite my nails, I’ve improved my scores on tests and I deleted my toxic social medias, something I was planning to do for years but I wasn’t disciplined enough to do it. My stomach burns disappeared and I strongly feel me more confident, calm and assertive. I also can control my thoughts and avoid of being ruminating some theme. I strongly recommend it!

I started meditating about 6 years ago. So much of my life I had clinical depression and have been on antidepressants. I always looked outside of myself for happiness, but got to a point where I was fed up with treating myself so poorly. The first day I meditated I woke up that morning in a bad mood, which was a common occurrence, since I didn't know I could have control of my emotions. When I decided to meditate, I had learned that 15 - 20 minutes a day is plenty of time. I did this in the morning before getting ready to go to work. I sat quietly on my couch, set a timer for 15 minutes, closed my eyes and just was. When the timer went off and I opened my eyes, I thought I had just experienced a miracle! My mood had changed completely and I went throughout the rest of my day happy! I was hooked, because I was in my late 40s and had just discovered for the first time in my life that I could control my emotions. I meditated on a daily basis for a year and my life changed dramatically for the better. I did continue to meditate after that, but like anything, it has changed with practice. I just successfully weaned myself off of my antidepressants which I started doing about 2 1/2 - 3 years ago and I am antidepressant free for the first time in over 25 years. Yes, the antidepressants changed my life, but they didn't teach me that I could have control over my emotions! Meditation and energy healing have taken my life to a whole new level and I am incredibly grateful for how my life has improved over the last 6 years. I've gone through a complete life transformation thanks to starting to meditate. I recommend to everyone to give it a try! It can only improve your life!

Even if one doesn't understand the technicalities of this video its sufficient to recognise, sitting quietly for certain time and avoid external contact with world outside gives space to deal with contents of one's mind, get a hold over cleaning process. Cleaning subconscious is simpler, just practice mindfulness allowing thoughts, emotions to pass in your mental screen ..only if you know YOURSELF you can heal yourself

The largest effect I've seen from 2-3 weeks of meditation experience (Didn't count the days) is recovery from negative emotions. Oftentimes I would get angry quite easily, and it would linger throughout my day effectively ruining it, but now, even though I might get angry, it doesn't bother me at all and goes away MUCH quicker.

I started Meditating about 6 years ago but i wasn’t as consistent , it was the hardest habit and still requires alot of Will Power to execute on daily basis. The benefits are much greater than the challenge you go through trying to turn this habit into a lifestyle. It’s the Hardest but yet the most important thing you’ll need to master, if you want to live a purposeful life.

My own story is much the same. 2500 years ago ( even possibly MUCH further back) our ancestors knew of these techniques and 2,500 years of ''R&D'' has even further perfected the practice. Now fMRI's are reinforcing the ancient wisdom. I believe meditation will quickly become a ''no brainer'' part of a healthy life style, on a par with eating healthy, getting adequate sleep, etc. Meditation has also taken my musical aspirations and even Lucid Dreaming, to higher levels. What a ''deal''! By bringing informal mindfulness practice into activities like walking, driving, and working, I find myself integrating meditation seamlessly into my life and effortlessly logging many hours per day. Sharing the good news is also a joy!

Listening music while laying down and letting your mind go for an adventure is amazing... After you come back from your own personalized trip you feel like a million dollars... By the way, it might take first about a month before you are able to free your mind of wondering, for me the "wondering" is the focus on my duties, tasks, negative thoughts, social connections, but when you learn to let go of those thoughts for a brief moment, you are literally going to be completely free to explore new horizons of your own mind, ramen.🙏

Those results lasted for a few months but then started to fade. I meditated again for the first time in a couple years yesterday. The corona virus had my stress levels so high that I reached for what used to work for me. The physical brain changes mentioned in this video really resonate with me. I believe that everyone put on antidepressants should also be trained in mindfulness meditation and eventually transitioned off meds after they feel stable. I know if I were shown this years ago, when I was placed on an SSRI, I would've avoided a lot difficulty trying to stay out of depression and anxiety. As for my meditation, I initially started using binaural beat meditation programs, but I found they eventually caused more stress and I was not gaining anything. The best is to meditate on your own, without help from brainwave entrainment technology. I use headphones and play nature sounds (I like the sound of rain) to help me get into a mindfulness state and it works great.

Below is a simple procedure using mindfulness for the management of motivation and positive affect. It has the virtue of being easily and personally testable, thus having a very short shelf life if wrong. The procedure as well as explanation of mindfulness (all very short) are derived from learning or incentive motivation theory that is grounded to rudimentary neural processes that are easily observable empirically and ‘felt’ personally. How mindfulness is essential to self-motivation and ‘flow’ or peak experience. Procedure: Consistent alternation between a resting protocol (e.g. mindfulness) and the pursuit of meaningful behavior will increase motivation and positive affect (arousal and pleasure). Explanation: Resting elicits opioid activity, or feels pleasurable, and meaningful behavior, as defined as behavior that has branching novel and positive outcomes (writing that great novel or just making the bed) elicits dopamine activity which causes arousal. The awareness of subsequent meaningful behavior while engaging in relaxation protocols such as mindfulness elicits a ‘priming’ response, namely dopamine release that increases opioid activity, and vice versa, making meaningful behavior seem self-reinforcing or ‘autotelic’. This procedure can be derived empirically, demonstrated personally, and emerges logically from an analysis of peak or ‘flow’ experiences. More granular detail on the neuroscience behind this in the little open-source book on learning theory below, and from the work of the distinguished affective neuroscientist Kent Berridge, from whose work this procedure is derived, and who also was kind to review and endorse my work linked below. ‘A Mouse’s Tale’ Learning theory for a lay audience from the perspective of modern affective neuroscience www.scribd.com/document/495438436/A-Mouse-s-Tale-a-practical-explanation-and-handbook-of-motivation-from-the-perspective-of-a-humble-creature ( Explanation of procedure on pp. 109-117, and an analysis of the flow experience on pp.148-151) Berridge article on the Neuroscience of Happiness - from Scientific American sites.lsa.umich.edu/berridge-lab/wp-content/uploads/sites/743/2019/10/Kringelbach-Berridge-2012-Joyful-mind-Sci-Am.pdf Berridge Lab, University of Michigan sites.lsa.umich.edu/berridge-lab/

I’ve started with yoga nidra (guided meditation) after a stroke and I’m so frustrated that I still haven’t got results after a few years. I’ve been anxious and miserable my entire life (I’m 47) and I just don’t know what relaxed and confident feels like, so my body can’t return to homeostasis and heal itself. I practice yoga nidra twice a day for 20-30 minutes in the hope I can improve my sleep that way, but I still wake up exhausted.

Hi Tamara, If you wake up exhausted, maybe you suffer from dehydration. Waking up tired after a reasonable number of sleeping hours is one of the reliable signs. Here, drinking pure water is not enough. To become properly hydrated, buy some electrolyte solution/drink (they contain sodium and potassium) so the water can get into your cells. As for the guided meditation - I have meditated for years but guided meditations/voice-overs make me nervous. What about trying to change your practice? No hard work, no agenda... ? Have a look at this article I wrote for meditators beginners: mindfulentrepreneurship.com/how-to-meditate-a-beginners-guide-in-4-easy-to-follow-steps/ for some basic tips. ♥︎

If you’re willing to try anything, look up wim hof method. Basically: meditation, cold exposure (showers or baths) and focused breathing I hear numerous people saying it’s fixed their autoimmune diseases and arthritis and all bad shit. It’s worth looking into at least, right...

@@Skatamska you could slowly ease into it. Day one of cold baths and I shivered like really bad. Day 5 and I’m no longer shivering. So maybe you could do slightly lower temp everyday and acclimate to it that way? I hope so for your benefit...

@@nicksenseitv4922 Nick, even if it's a minute, it counts. Every second spent on meditation = the time you provide to your body to heal itself. Imagine a thirsty person asking you for water. Would you tell them that a few sips are not even worth it? :) Once you feel the effects of meditation, you will naturally start wanting to do it more. Don't approach it as a task. Approach it as a "me" time.

You tube theravada meditation......sit back straight. Focus on breath, where it comes in and out of nose,preferably. I would, eyes closed.pay attention to thoughts. For now, when u get a thought, say to yourself , thinking, and go back to focusing on breathing. Start there.

Totally antithetical to the idea of being mindful, but I wondered how much more interesting meditation would be when on psychotropics.... :-/
@bellarosales4919
@bellarosales4919 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that’s antithetical at all. Certain psychotropics help pull awareness to the present moment even if it’s in a slightly altered state. So I think, it would be very interesting to see what new insights someone could gather from combining the two.

@@BeautifulScience Science shows that it helps some people, it’s a waste of time for some and it has a negative affect on some. I think it’s sad that we have gotten to the point that when averaged all together it’s a net positive. I also dislike that because it’s a net positive it add fuel to the fire for all the con artists and shysters out there to claim that there book is good for everyone. Because, you know. As long as they get to collect money they get to dismiss the damage they do to some. It’s disgraceful.
