🐔This is a collaboration with PETA. Chickens. They are everywhere. Their meteoric rise in number over time makes them 70% of all birds alive right now on Earth, 23 billion or so, all born for their meat, or the eggs they produce.
Together with turkeys, they are 99% of all land animals slaughtered for food in the United States.
55 billion are killed worldwide yearly.
5,400,000 every hour.
1,500 every second.
So, what prompted humans to produce and kill so many chickens? Did you know they are a lot smarter than we think and have the ability to dream like humans? Do you know how the chickens we consume are raised and treated?
Time is over for egg-scuses. The truth is no yolk; let’s find out now.

Well my birds are hatched on farm. Feed locally. Are provided 9 archers of ground to run around on. Our roosters are used as food and not waisted. We use their bones for bone broth. Then they are ground up and used as fertilizer for our garden. They are put down as humanly as possible. Most of our hens die from predation or natural causes. We also use all of the manure they provide to create hot and cold composting piles. All birds have their own nesting box that they are free to use. Their chicken tractors are moved around the field and the birds are let out to free roam. We have one stationary coop for older birds but they are also allowed to free roam. They are provided fresh food and water everyday twice. I feel this is the most ethical way to raise birds. It doesn’t take up anymore space that a large ware house. If they are integrated into a complete regenerative farm system they are one of the key pillars of that system for nitrogen fixation. They are also excellent at pest control and excellent at light aeration to the soil. If your going to buy chicken. Buy it from a producer who cares about the animal.

Hey! Thanks for the nice comment, and yes it can be quite tiring. I think most people are unaware and sometimes ignorant to how the chicken breast or big pack of eggs they buy actually get there. It is so easily done and I too myself used to pick up meat and eggs without a second thought. I hope some people watching this will learn about this process and at least start to make a few better choices, what do you think? Killing s wrong but playing god with animals and causing this level of suffering is just on another level. Lets get this video seen as much as poss! :)

Good video. In Finland the chickens grow in cleaner environment because of strict antibiotic rules, usually antibiotics are not used, and hence the meat won't contain bacteria the same way. Also same thing with cows and pigs, mostly antibiotic free. Also the price is around quadruple for other countries. Not going to say the animals live happily ever after but could definitely be a lot worse.

Wow! Very well put. If humans stuck to eating what they need to eat to survive rather that what they want to eat, we wouldn’t need to create these over size chickens. Going vegan and vegetarian may help, but cutting down the amount we all eat will allow chickens to simply be chickens! KFC is one of the worst reasons for this as well as all the I only eat “protein” people! Well done beautiful science! Very informative! 👍🏻 🤓 😎

Backyard chickens are growing in popularity. While we have the genetic changes from years of selective breeding we treat them very humanly. My hens are my pets (I have vet bills to prove it). Yes they produce a lot of eggs. And when they’re done laying they get to live out their retirement years in a large yard and get treats everyday.

Yes I agree with that. If we all keep at least three or four companion chickens and raise meat birds in such a manner that their genetics are better and they have all of the greens and toys and dust bathing areas and meal worms and an appropriate to them diet and adequate air and sunshine like our heritage breed companion chickens who do end up laying more than the wild birds but they stop and rest when they need to such as the Americanas, the polish, the sultans, the silkies and other such companionable moderate egg laying breeds which at the very least have the most personable attitudes of the chicken world but some such as the Americanas are very very intelligent more so then even the average chicken.

I’m a hunter and I eat about 200-300 lbs of all organic free range meat a year but our ecosystem could not support a majority hunter population. Additionally, there just isn’t enough land to support everyone raising there own food. So I truly believe that this is just a horrible reality that we will have to live with to survive with our current population.

The premise of the video, that chickens are a major bird species, is only because they are a food source. One only has to compare wild turkey, which can fly, to food turkey to see this. If they aren't food, they will be rare, that's how domestication works. I don't see how this video could change any minds and get people to become vegetarians. The graphics were very good, as usual. Love the channel best when it's not as preachy.

This was a beautifully educational video. Amazing job! Yet it was also incredibly sad :( I have an argument though. I always disagreed with the majority of vegans/vegetarians on the reasons to go vegan, as most of them go on such diets on the basis of "killing and torturing animals is bad". As if plants do not have life, as if vegetation does not possess soul. I have always been a pretty spiritual person, believing in such ideas, but the truth is, if we are going to go strictly by those rules, we will undoubtedly perish out of starvation. I think the solution lies somewhere else. If you carefully watch how people of the old times (not all of them, but a good portion of them) conducted their manner of interacting with the environment (some still do, particularly some native tribes, not only in america but the rest of the world as well), it becomes obvious that the solution is what appears to be a certain way of "natural moderation". "Respect the water!" We have heard from such people, when they go fishing. "You don't have to empty the damn pond! Just get what you need." It is the mindset that does not view hunting as a "sport", but as a way of becoming part of the environment, continuing the cycle of death and rebirth. When they go out and hunt an elk, they know what it means, they do not treat it as if it is a "game" of sorts, something recreational and fun. It is to them, a serious and unbelievably necessary part of life, a process that every being goes through. Eventually we too, become part of the plants' diet, and the animals'. Now, in today's world, it is not easy to live like this. For some it is possible, others however may not have access to nature on that level. And that is the part that boggles me the most. Anyways, sorry for the long comment.

Hey, thanks for the comment, and some interesting points you make. I think the key thing I am taking from this is moderation and respect, which is what we are probably failing the chickens and nearly all other animals mass produced for meat right? Like you say, if it is a necessity for previous generations to hunt and kill for using the meat I can respect that, but not hunting for a picture with a dead body or just to shoot birds out the sky for fun. Same with meat, sure if we look at our diets, do we need to kill 10 chickens just for us to share some chicken wings? And do we then need to give them the worst lives possible for our end gain? If we at least moderated our meat intake, as we don't necessarily need or even halved it, would it help the situation you think?

@@BeautifulScience I think moderation is probably a rather practical solution (or at least one of the most practical ones in my opinion). I hate the "mass-consumption" trend that the world, particularly western countries, have fallen into for the last century or so. Because I do not believe that animals were killed and tortured like this back in the old days, for simply there were not so many people demanding meat. Although This is just my speculation and I haven't seen any data, I think that people in general did not consume meat back then or even if they did, it happened rarely. It probably was a luxurious way of living that only a certain minority could afford. It is because of us after all, it is the people. If I don't buy, or buy less at least, it matters. And if enough of us start doing it, it can make a difference, for what is demanded is delivered. But how do we actually make people not follow this mindless wave of overconsumption that leads to more delivery on the part of capitallistically oriented producers? Well, it's incredibly hard but that's where people like you come in. To help spread the awareness in the hope that perhaps someday, we will be able to open our eyes and see what we have done and are doing to the world, as one manifestation of our behaviour is the price that animals have to pay. I hope we realize what the correct way, the moral way, of living our short but consequential life is, and collectively decide to adhere to it :)

Yo ANU and the crew are supposed to be poultry gods in other words like hawkgirl and the fennigarians and we kill 1500 chickens per second world wide right now, quoting what this dude just said, it seems people don't like them much chickens or their chicken gods, anyway just a thought. I'm gonna finish my bananas and chicken dinner with Milo on the side. What a combo huh

I watched Mike Rowe from Dirty jobs sexing chickens from a long time ago and now knowing the next "missing" step was cutting off beaks of female chicks and grinding up the males just makes this cruel. I get that we have to feed a massive population but do you really have to treat the chickens that way? Leave it to Americans to mass produce livestock in the cruelest ways possible.

I have 100 chickens. My chickens free range, and seem to love me when I go out to them. (I think it’s because they know I mean food). When I say free range, I mean proper free range, you can see my videos if you need prove. I disagree that free range are not better, and I believe it is silly to completely boy cott chickens. Do your research and find a good farm that treats there chickens right. If chickens were not eaten or used for eggs, then no one would have chickens, and chickens may not be around. There’s a fine line. Don’t buy caged, and do you research, and buy from a local farm.

I don’t necessarily think the answer is to go vegan, I think it’s to stop buying from commercial businesses! Factory farming is awful! But buying local is not! I grew up on a farm and raise animals for market and all of our animals that we ever processed had a wonderful life up until the point that it was ended...

Not always. Jungle fowl are predators of smaller animals such as mice & snakes. They are midrange in the food chain.
