One does not simply)lay listen to Tool you experience Tool. I say the same about groups like Floyd and Moody Blues. It’s an adventure

I been hearing people say this for years. But truthfully, because they find genius ways to lose your ability to count timings to their songs (without insane effort), you just stop trying and go along for whatever they're doing. The math works out, you can trust that and forget "where the 1 is" to their stuff. Yeah, it's different than nearly anything else ever written.

I've enjoyed Tool for a long ass time and what gives me my Tool kick these days, aside their music, is watching KZbin videos, not of reactors experiencing Tool for the first time, but young musicians performing Tool songs. The O'Keefe Foundation kids did a fantastic rendition of "46 and 2" and Sober (among many great songs from other great artists) and there's plenty other videos where kids take a go at playing Tool songs. On top of that, you Have Danny Carey having several videos floating around KZbin where he either joins kids in their band practice or performs live with them. Tool is probably going to be around releasing new songs for a while yet, but we can be assured that their music has carried over generations and the Tool influence is going to give us better music going forward.

There's a video on YT of group of school kids playing this and it is mind blowing, they were just kids. It's called 'Kids Cover 46 and 2 by Tool / O'Keefe Music Foundation'. You really need to watch the video. They forgo the long intro and get straight into the meat of the song. You'll love the one kid that looks to be 9 or 10 yrs old and the lead singer can't be more than 12! Her voice will send chills down your spine and your jaw will be back on the floor. They were scary good.

One of the bands Tool has cited as deep inspiration/influence was King Crimson, particularly what is sometimes called Mark 3 or the "1980s version". Lots of great suggestions in other comments for ways to branch out into more Tool. I highly recommend those as well! But let me add one: 10000 Days / Wings for Marie Parts I and II (listen to these back to back for full effect). Maynard's mom suffered a stroke when he was younger, and she was permanently disabled as a result for close to 30 years after. These songs were Maynard's way of coming to terms as a staunch atheist with his mom maintaining her faith to the end, and with the people in her church who were utter hypocrites in his view. Knowing that bit about his life, and knowing how intensely personal these two songs are to him, I can only tell you that there is a moment that brings me to tears every single time - perhaps surprising coming from a band like Tool, but there it is.

Nice reaction. Nice reaction. One thing I like about tool is how well they incorporate the riff into the melody. A little tidbit, they never put lyrics in their CD 's. In musical terms you are trying to describe the time signature changes (for example this song changes between 4/4 and 7/8 mostly ( count 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,5,6,7), odd time signatures in general, polyrhythms, odd accent placements, riffs, dynamic changes and much much more. It is a complex task even for an experienced musician. There will surely be a ton of great suggestion on your Tool journey so I will suggest something else. For your Nightwish journey I urge you to try "Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars - Live rehearsals remastered at Sonic Pump Studios". Since you seem to love drummers, well, in that one the current Nightwish drummer Kai Hahto blasts your braint into oblivion! If you want something even more complex, Dream Theater will blow your mind. Something like Dance of Eternity.

You don't have to be an expert in music to give your opinion and you always make very good observations, we can understand any music based on its 4 parameters: 1-Timbre: characteristic sound of an instrument or voice, in rock we find many sounds modified by effects, especially distortion in the guitar and bass (e.g., Ace of Spades by Motorhead and very high-pitched or guttural voices in metal. 2-Pitch: referring to the notes that musicians play, all musicians play in the same tone (this is the complicated part) so as not to go out of tune, it includes musical scales, chords and harmonies 3: Duration: music is a sequence of sounds and silences, it includes rhythm, groove includes tempo (speed of music)(infinite combinations of duration of notes and silences) in rock the rhythmic basis of the bass and the drums are a tandem 4: Intensity: refers to the volume of the instruments that constantly change within a performance, (e.g. Nirvana) I hope it can help you, greetings🤘
