Exactly, was the whole point. The villagers represented the masses that couldn't think for themselves but could easily be scared into going on murderous manhunts. This was literally a close-minded "poor provincial town" where the residents never wandered out of their comfortable lives, never thought to question the prevailing views/beliefs. Belle explains all this in the song "Belle" where the live action movie chose to place all those hostile looking villagers.🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

It made me think that they were mean to Belle because the Enchantress was setting up Belle to marry the Beast from the moment she got to the poor provincial town. And that they were small minded because they were literally missing large parts of their memories and angry and depressed because they knew something was missing but couldn't remember what. F the Enchantress in this movie.

Belle didn’t fit in not because she was a “rebel”, she didn’t fit in because the people around her did not hold the same values she does. Belle is an introverted nerd who dreams about adventures and having almost fantastical life. Whereas the villagers don’t care, they’re quite happy with living a mundane life in a town they’ve been born and raised. Belle would find it impossible to talk to them and vice versa, but neither party really despise the other. That’s just human interactions.

She kept her head in the clouds barely taking notice of things around her, she has a weird father who is WAY too old, and she hasn't really settled down at the age when she should have been. Then you add in that Belle is a knockout and could have ANY guy she wanted (rich or poor) and yet doesn't care. . A big aspect of the movie is the fact that even the town doesn't look past Belle's appearance. If she was less attractive no one would have cared... Yet the town didn't have any antipathy towards Belle, they considered her a welcome member of their village. . Yet the funny thing is the NEW Beauty and the Beast... Belle and her Father... really hate the village and consider them ignorant poor people... (Hey Hollywood projecting much?). You know, that one thing Belle is supposed to look past?

The LA Movie, you can see there is animosity from both sides. Though in a cause-and-effect way the town hatin on Belle was because of the Enchantress' magic, not because they lived basic.

The village folk didn't dislike her in the original. They were worried about her. Her reading wasn't an issue, it's a useful skill and wasn't that uncommon at the time. The issue with the reading was twofold. 1. The degree to witch she read. We see her reading as she walks the streets barely looking up like a modern day cell phone zombie. We get the feeling that she does not have much of a social life in the village, ironically not made better by her shutting everyone out with her obsessive reading habit. She uses the bookstore like a library, one that she has read everything in multiple times. 2. What she reads. In the animated original we see her lend a book from the bookstore and read to some sheep. But the story she reads is a fairy tale, a children's story. The village folk are worried about her because she is to them what a teen in the 90s or 00s who locked themselves away in their room to watch anime was to their parents and community. They worry that once she grows out of her obsession she will be to old to score a good husband to raise a family with, which they as traditional townsfolk see as the best way for a woman to a happy life. Something the story pretty much shows is what she chooses in the end but with Beast rather than anyone from the village, but we can't really blame the villagers for not considering Beast as marriage material when he was a well, beast, and they didn't even know he existed. Belle also sings about wanting something more than the quiet village life, something pretty much every villager has wished for at some point in their youth. That combined with her obsession with children's stories have them concerned about her being stuck in a childlike mentality, perhaps from not having her mother around, only her eccentric inventor father, and really even today we don't expect fathers to be able to raise children as and daughters especially as well as mothers. Consider what they see of her; a young woman who shuts others out, hides away in fairy tales and has the daydreams of a child about exciting adventures. To them she looks like someone living with a trauma keeping her at least partially mentally adolescent. They consider her odd and strange but they worry about her, maybe pity her but there is no dislike or malice.

To be honest I think they consider strange that a girl this young and beauty could find interesting reading more than guys (like the three blondies) or work. But despite her being so weird in their eyes, they were somewhat attracted to her and her different attitude. They were curious about her and her weirdness, watching at her smiling and singing how much unique she was. They have NEVER hated her. Just Gaston wanted her to stop reading because he doesn't consider it right for a woman because "it's not right for a girl to have ideas".

I think it was just a representation of how people only tend to look at the outside, which was the entire point of this story: there is more than meets the eye. So the townsfolk are these people who just live their lives according to society's standards and don't question anything. Then comes this girl who reads and has ideas, opinions and imagination. Of course they find that odd. They find it strange that a beautiful young woman doesn't want to marry a handsome young man. They find it strange that she seeks adventure and excitement instead of settling down and have children and be a doting wife. They find it strange that she is willing to give up a life of easy comfort, safety and familiarity. They find it strange that she chooses to be odd, chooses to be herself and not conform to the standard ideas of what a woman should be of that time period. The message of Belle is that you shouldn't to give up yourself in order to fit in, that it's ok to not fit in and that you don't have to be ashamed of it. Never lose your hopes and dreams go just because others have different opinions of it. Follow your own path and stay true to who you are, write your own story, as did Belle. The message of the townsfolk is that they are willing sheep, slaves of fashion; only liking things when everybody does, only listening to the handsome strong guy cause he seems to know what he's talking about. The townsfolk are designed to be surfaced, it mirrors our own society.

I know im late to the party but in my opinion, they kinda ruined Belle. Belle was very kind and sweet in the cartoon. She wasnt afraid to stand up for herself, but she maintained her kindness, compassion, and empathy at all times. This kindness allowed for her to fall in love with the beast, because she could tell he was hurt and she could see the goodness within him. I have a hard time beliving Emma Watson's Belle would ever love the beast. She would see him as an animal, a evil wicked thing. Emma Watson's Belle tried to escape from the castle, while the original Belle toughed it out and lived up to her word. The original Belle had more strength and substance. She was a female i loved to look up to because she remained kind throughout it all, but she wasn't a doormat. Emma Watsons Belle is too tough, and too stubborn. I wish they hadnt of changed her. There are a lot of things i didnt like about this film, and im sad because beauty and the beast is my favorite disney film

That scene where Belle was teaching the girl to read really bugs me because it ignores the history. In 1740 (when Beauty and the Beast was written) twenty five percent of all women could read. There were even womans magazines being published. And the Beauty and the Beast novel (which pre-dates the faery tale) was written by a woman. When one fourth of all women could read in France in that era (and not just the large cities), there's no way in Hell they'd have reacted to her simply teaching a child to read.

That part felt like a heavy-handed attempt to depict the oppression of women and cement Emma/Belle’s status as Super Awesome Female Role Model by someone who has only a rough, stereotype-ridden idea of “olden times” as universally backward in all things. And to answer the other commenter, I doubt a remote town’s ethos and customs would be so profoundly unlike those of the capital. Again, it’s 18th-century France, not 8th-century Francia. Sure, boys’ educations were prioritized over those of their sisters, and unless they belonged to a Jewish family with a business, girls’ educations did not have a professional application outside the home, which was itself a plus. (But this is a Disney movie, so there are no Jews, anyway...) It’s totally fair to show the boys heading to school while girls of a certain class did menial labor-but if attainable/economical, literacy was a valuable asset for a woman, not least as a means of achieving moral and religious improvement. I’m kind of in two minds about it because it’s eye-rollingly ham-fisted but also this is a weird fantasy France so yeah.

I think they were trying to falsely equate 18th-century French society with something like modern-day Boko Haram society, because as we all know "Traditional Western Culture Bad" and "No women had rights until 1973". Meanwhile, I guarantee you that the live-action "Aladdin" will be "woke" AF, with half the shops in the bazaar being run by women, half the guards in the Sultan's palace being women, and a big to-do made about how cultured and cosmopolitan and respected Jasmine is by all, her only restriction in the world being that she's royalty. Jasmine's gender probably won't even come up once...and while it didn't in the animated original, neither did Belle's, originally! We'll see that "gritty period realism" regarding gender roles disappear _real quick,_ once we're talking about a fairy tale set in the Middle East!

I said the exact same thing when my family and I watched this dumpster fire- that roar was essentially the sound of Beast's heart breaking as he lets go of the thing he loves the most _(and_ his ticket to being human again) so she can go help her father. The roar was one of the most raw and powerful moments in classic Disney, *and* later played into Gaston propagandizing to the villagers about how vicious the Beast was. A perfect example of show, don't tell. The remake decided to have him spell it out for us in song. I'm not totally knocking the song, I somewhat enjoy some of the covers I've heard of Evermore, but as a storytelling device in the remake, it falls completely flat.

This movie doesn't get that the town didn't think Belle was weird cause she was 'too feminist' or a 'girl' reading. They just thought reading was a weird thing to be preoccupied with in general. As Lindsey Ellis put best in her video essay "they're a poor prevential town, they take everything at face value". ballon fly is disagree, at least from Gaston’s character. I think they went more extreme with the town also having this distrust of women reading in the remake because it’s live action. It’s based a cartoon, it needs to have some grit and relevance to modern topics of interest. Gaston actually says something along the lines of “women shouldn’t read, because then they get ideas, thinking...” And belle says “Gaston, you’re positively prime evil.” I just think this movie gives an updated, and maybe bolder stance on what the original at least hinted at. It’s still Disney. But for those reasons, I can see why someone wouldn’t like the movie, I guess.

SketchTheParadigm York Gaston isn’t supposed to be representative of the town as a whole though. Gaston is more representative of a pretty face and charm for people to be taken in by while not knowing the hidden maliciousness behind it. If you could call anyone sexist in the original, yes it would be Gaston. If you want to update the topic Gaston character would be the one to go for it with. Regarding the town itself, Belle doesn’t fit in not because she’s too progressive and they want to push her down for being feminist, but rather because she is unsatisfied with a lifestyle the town is more that content with so much so that they don’t understand why anyone would want anything more. Making the town more sexist is just a confusing change that the movie doesn’t even care enough about to expand on beyond one silly poorly dialogued scene that is so minuscule in importance that they don’t even bother to carry that ‘bolder stance’ on to Gaston, the only true character that change would be logical towards. Gaston and The Beast were the same type of person, when they were both introduced in the 90's animated movie, they both thought Belle was a "prize to be won" (which oddly was a plot point in numerous 90's Disney movies). While the Beast changed himself for Belle and learned to be a better person gaining back his humanity at the end. Gaston learned nothing and went to destroy everything and everyone belle loved because he couldn't have her, becoming more of a "beast". They sort of "switched" places at the end of the movie. Gaston became a "Beast" and The Beast became a "Man" (Which again is another plot point that Disney used several times during the 90's). The 2017 Movie had none of this subtlety and/or nuance to it's story and it is completely forgettable like ALL the live action Disney Remakes.

To be fair, the Beast himself didn’t think so highly of himself and never thought he was worthy of anyone, let alone Belle. If anyone had the “prize to be won” mentality, it was Lumiere. When the Beast began to realise that his actions have consequences, that’s when he started to make the changes in himself. Gaston (that fucking asshole) on the other hand … was always TFA. Belle’s persistent nos and seeing the Beast as competition just brought that inner ugliness more to the front.

It's less of the Beast viewing her as a prize and more of the Beast viewing her as a means to an end, the end being him becoming human again. His decision to let Belle go to save her father, without any strings attached is the main thrust of his arc, as this decision helps Belle at the cost of his own goals.

Heck, there's even a scene where Belle goes to the bookshop and the guy working there is nice to her and lets her keep the book. I’m so glad that someone said it. I hated that Emma Watson was Belle like she is the worst representation of her. I grew up with Belle being a strong dreamer who doesn’t give a shit about what others think and does what she can to protect those she loves even if everyone is against her. My favorite non-Belle moment in the 2017 movie is a clip this video didn't even include - she agrees to take her father's place in the dungeon, then says "Don't worry, I'll escape!" In the original, she takes her father's place out of love and compassion, even though she's scared and falls into a depression thinking this is the last time she'll see her father - but she still means to stay because she exchanged herself for her father. She only runs away when she absolutely can't keep that promise anymore because she was so terrified at him lashing out at her. Adding "I'll escape!" is so...untrustworthy and dishonest and makes that life exchange so meaningless and all her emotions - fear, anger, sadness later are undermined by this bout of confidence that comes basically out of nowhere.

So I talked to a friend about this movie. And she’s extremely well-read in medieval literature and history. Back in the day, promises weren’t to be taken lightly. A promise, any promise, was to be kept or you’d be shamed. So there’s a story or a well-to/-do married woman promising a peasant she’ll sleep with him if he performs some near-impossible favor. And he does. And she goes to her husband and asks what to do. He told her yeah, sleeping with that guy would be shameful, but breaking a promise would bring her even more disgrace. Now let’s look at Belle’s sacrifice through the same lens. Her promise was her honor and beauty and virtue. “I’ll escape” can only break the immersion by painting a sacrifice / promise through the modern perspective where there’s no shame associated with breaking it. Sad.

the whole Ghaston Lefou ship is probably the dumbest part of the movie. I've heard people say "oh no a perfectly good reason for Lefou to be obsessed with Ghaston, what a crime!" and if you think that you completely misunderstood the character dynamic here. Lefou is a leach. he's a creep who wouldn't get any popularity on his own, so he hangs out with Ghaston so he gets more eyes on himself. this adds to Gaston's character because his best friend is literally a leach who will give him unconditional praise even though he doesn't like him for his personality, but for his fame. and because of Lefou only hanging out because of his popularity, Ghaston can just smack the heck out of him and he will still give unrelenting (but empty) praise. Lefou being attracted sexually to Ghaston completely undermines this dynamic, and in fact, a major plot point of the film, being that Ghaston wants Bell as his wife. if he could just be with Lefou there's no problem.

Something that also got to me in the movie was how disrespectful Belle was throughout the entire thing. In the opening song, she walks on the edge of the communal well. Which forced the young ladies who'd just laid out their laundry to quickly pick it up. Then when she invented the washing machine (why since she never does anything else the entire movie invention wise) She takes up the entire well for a device that A. can only be used by one person. And B. requires an animal that will take up all the space. And is unsanitary for the area. For a progressive girl of her time. Belle certainly became a spoiled privileged one.

Wasn't the reason that Lefou stayed around Gaston was because he admired him and considered him his best friend, and why Gaston always had Lefou around was because even though he got beat up a lot, he respected Lefou as a friend and basically considered him "second in command"? I didn't enjoy the film at all despite me being a big fan of Disney stuff. I felt like they only casted Emma because she is popular rather than thinking about how well she could actually portray the character. I personally think casting lesser known actors / actresses is great, you're giving other people a chance (not reusing the same actors over and over) and it also helps you seperate the character from the actor. It really just felt like we were watching Emma Watson rather than Belle. Her singing was incredibly mediocre and autotuned, and the characters looked a bit unsettling in CG. It would have been cool to see a more historically accurate adaptation. I think Disney should only make remakes when they have a really good plan for it, rather than it just being a easy cash cow for when they run out of ideas.

I don't know if you're American, but it seems to be Americans that find the British accent of Emma Watson distracting. Here in the UK, it's just as odd to have Belle speaking American, it sounds bizarre and off, but giving her a French accent would make it harder to understand her, so whatever, it's fine, she's American-sounding. As far as I can ascertain, the fairytale remakes are given British accents to make them sound authentically old, because it sounds more archaic and mythic (to American ears anyway) than a southern drawl/bronx or similar. There are plenty of French adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, if having an English Belle smacks of appropriation to you, for example the 2014 live action one. No one complains that Lily James as Cinderella (2015) wasn't French, even though Charles Perrault who wrote 'Cendrillon' might complain that Disney has appropriated his story (there are Cinderella-like stories in many cultures, it's true, but there are also Beauty and the Beast stories in many cultures beyond France and Charles Perrault wrote the version of Cinderella Disney uses).

Ok, I don’t mind Emma and she’s free to be in any films or shows she wants to be in; she is an actress and I can’t sit and wave my finger at her for playing in other films other than the Harry Potter movies. However, for me- I didn’t like her as Belle plainly for all the points you have clearly and undeniably described in this video; she took control of Belle’s character and made her like her, It’s not even historically accurate! I am not a racist, sexist or any ‘phonic’ in the book in any way, shape or form but you can’t rewrite history and what happened then; kids don’t care if gay, trans or ethnic or coloured people are in films, kids don’t see colour, gender or sexuality as an issue until their parents point it out and make it an issue. Belle wasn’t hated or bullied by the villagers at all, they just thought she was a bit weird because the simple life they all enjoyed and aimed for wasn’t appealing to her; Belle is open minded, imaginative and intelligent and those around her were more simple minded in nature- but Emma totally ruined that for me in this movie, making her more of a feminist and making everyone around her isolate her (besides the book-keeper). Beauty and the Beast has been my absolute favourite since I was 3 and I was hyped for this live action; and that dress!! OOF don’t get me started on that dress! The dress was appalling! I know they did their absolute best in recreating it, but my god did it look awful! Where are the opera gloves? The off the shoulder sleeves? The beautiful design? The hair that waved over her shoulder? where was all that?!?! Evermore was semi- alright, I tolerated it but where was that Roar of despair that sent chills down my spine when I was 7?! That realisation of loosing all hope to ensure your loved one happiness? The fight scene was a total joke as well; anti-climactic. I also noticed the ‘Twilight’ copy past theme of the credits. What’s the point of trying to make a historically accurate film when you don’t even take history into consideration? I understand it might be viewed badly by others- but seriously!! I hated this movie with a passion, i understand they did their best and everything but I was thoroughly disappointed in its outcome.

Emma tried to make Belle more powerful and feminist and yet, she ended up doing the freaking opposite. Holy crap I hate this remake so much. A thing that I noticed in the remake: In the live action film, Belle's washing machine invention WAS SIMPLE AND PRACTICAL, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, SUCCESSFUL AND FULLY FUNCTIONAL. Maurice's crazy and deadly looking inventions never really worked in the beginning of the animated movie, that's why the villagers thought of him as a kinda crazy, eccentric inventor. His invention only successfully worked during the break out scene with chip and the woodchopper, but none of the villagers witnessed it. Plus, Belle's invention is simple and easy to understand. Like, all you need is a barrel and rope, then tie it up to a donkey and make it go around in circles. Maurice's inventions were too elaborate for the dumb townspeople to understand and too risky and hazardous to be put to use.

This would have been a great set up for father-daughter bonding moments, like testing inventions together and discussing ideas. It would have been a great payoff too because we'll get to see that same moment again when they escape together.

Another small thing that annoys the hell out of me. Bell's clothes(Her normal every day ones speficially).I know the original one didn't have clothes all that accurate with the time period.But even so,they still feel closer compared to what the movie did.She is literary wearing what a hipster cottage lover girl on Tumblr would think women dressed like back then but did 0 research on the mater. Her clothes are way too modern looking.The colours should had been more full,more raggy,no animal prints and no fucking gold necklace.Gold necklaces were 100% for rich people only back then!Also they were not as small and delicate as they are today.Back then gold was a sign a status far more than today,so when they did get something made out of gold,they made it big and detailed so you fucking noticed them.

Okay so i LITERALLY got to see this movie for free when i started working at a movie tavern. As part of the training, we need to have a good understanding of what the costumer experiences and how we should be interacting with them. To do this, on the last day of our training we are shown a free movie and given a free meal (and allowed to order the good, expensive stuff too!), giving us a learning experience of being a costumer. It was like 7 pm on a friday when all 6 people from our training group (myself included) sat down to enjoy this free experience and the movie they just so happened to show us was the new beauty and the beast (as it had just came out around that time). All of us had left once we finished our food (about 40 minutes after the movie started), the movie was that boring. Most were just on their phones until then. All 6 of us literally didn't want to keep watching a completely free movie.

While Emma Watson tried to imply that she had no privilege at all she had to show her skill like other girls but Bill Condon strongly said Emma Watson was the ONLY CHOICE from the beginning.
