I've just come to let everyone know that Jan Rabson, the original voice of the Old Man, passed away yesterday at the age of 68. I had a Facebook conversation with Jan once, after finding out he was the voice of the Old Man. I suggested that maybe he could meet Phelous one day and they could do some sort of crossover. He was nothing but polite, friendly, and patient with me. And I hope he carried that same attitude for the rest of his life as well. He'll be barging into Heaven because he was expected, and all the angels shall cry out at his arrival HEEEEEEEEEllelujah, because he was never useless in our hearts and in his life. ~ Rest in Peace ~ Jan Rabson (June 14, 1954 - October 14, 2022)

I never heard of him before but from what I can gather from Behind the Voice Actors, he had a decent voice-acting career and vocal range, and yes, I do hear the Old Man voice in some of his credited roles. Could be that he was a recurring VA for these Golden Film flicks too much like Cam Clark and Jeff Bennett, as I think his voice can be heard in some other roles, namely other father characters.

I don't get why any of these versions waste time with the father nonsense. Just have _BEAUTY_ get lost in the woods and intrude into the magical castle for shelter. That way, y'know, the meet-cute with the Beast doesn't begin with a life-or-death ultimatum... If you ask me, the story would make more sense if the Beast started out already pure-of-heart but just repulsive to superficial people, and Beauty was the one who - to spite being outwardly attractive - had some character flaw she/he needed to overcome. That way, it really is about love conquering all and going beyond first impressions, and not just "Here's an abusive psycho that's taken you captive. Better hope he mellows out so you can fall in love with him!"

I just saw the live action beauty and the beast yesterday and I cracked up when I saw that they decided to do the scene where Maurice sees the food on the table and immediately tucks in XD I had Phelous's voice in my head going "Well, this must be for me, the jackass who just broke in!". I just realized something...The Beast is clearly musing at 18:44 about making Old Man's hot daughter his live-in sex slave. So him giving Old Man a fortune in gold as an apology, and then telling Beauty that he can't bring himself to kill her, is actually just a ploy to make Beauty think that he's a caring guy, making her more receptive to his advances. And it cuts her off from her family because Old Man thinks she's dead. Damn, and people have accused the Disney version of being Stockholm Syndromey...

Me too. But at least the Beast had character development in the Disney one. He was mean in the beginning, and after some time had past he started to have genuine feelings for Belle. He then realized it was from to keep her as his potential curse-breaker, so he made the sacrifize and let her go home for good while knowing that he would remain a beast forever if she didn’t return of her own free will. The Goodtimes Beast never developted as a character though. He was the same type that would murder over a plocked rose and intended to keep Beauty as his permanent pet for the rest of her life, from the beginning to the end. And if Beauty was slightly less attractive in his eyes, he probably would have killed her in Old Man’s place.

I immediately thought of this review whenever I saw the live action Disney movie because they brought back the whole "prison for plucking a rose" thing. I think they were trying to make fun of the original story, but that's the reason why the classic Disney movie strayed away from that concept. There's another problem with this film. At the begining of the movie is says: "Adapted from the classic tale Beauty and the Beast by Jakob Grimm" Jakob Grimm didn't write Beauty and the Beast. French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve wrote it.

Beauty in this actually looks like a girl I had a crush on. Same poofy blonde hair, same droopy blue eyes, same lips [especially the color. That is the EXACT pink]. The only difference is that when she spaced out, it was because she was trying to translate things. At least, that's how she explained it. So now I'm stuck with imagining that Beauty is an animated version of my old crush, and it honestly makes your commentary ten times funnier, which is crazy because you're already hilarious.

This movie might be deeper than most first realize. I believe that the character of Crazy Old Old Man is actually based on the biblical figure of Lot. Here's a passage from Genesis: "Hmmmm, a bunch of strangers I've never met before claim that they're Angels and that God is going to destroy the city; I asked them if they were angels and they said yes. Rewatching all the Beauty and the Beast reviews, I noticed that most of them fail to explain why it was ok for old man to take the food and shelter but not the rose. The logic of this segment is based on that thing called sacred hospitality which in our society is not widely known anymore. The rose does not count because its a luxury item. Disney knew they had to explain this away so that modern day children would get it.

What Phelous didn't realize Old Man was originally voiced by Jan Rabson, aka Stanley Gurd Jr. It's the guy who did a LOT of voices, like Gepetto from Tatsunoko's Pinocchio (Harmony Gold dub), Mr. Feather, the scientist, Jack the dog, etc. from Scamper the Penguin, George the frog, narrator, and the Crystal Prince from Thumbelina: A Magical Story, and Kerma from Ninja Turtles(1987-1996), trust me, his voices are instantly identifiable.
