COSMETOLOGY STATE BOARD EXAM PRACTICAL REQUIREMENTS AND KIT DEMO

The exam room can have up to 8 applicants. The examiner will give you a briefing, and afterwards the examiner will give you 10 minutes to SET-UP all your general supplies, so set-up your station. The procedures you have to do (in order that the examiner will ask to perform) are:
1. Blow dry styling and thermal irons
2 minutes to set up (set up your station)
blow dry procedure; 10 minutes, top and side section
curling iron procedure; 10 minutes: 3 curls on the top, 4 on
the side of the front section, step back to show that you are finished
2. Haircutting; 2 minutes to set-up. Haircut the back nape
are with razor (guideline razor), and one inch off the rest of the hair around the head with scissors, step back once you are done
3. Chemical waving (perm) 2 min to set up, start when the examiner will ask you to start for each procedure. Section the hair, wrap the rods, gloves, protective cream, cotton, STEP BACK saturate in front of the examiner and test curl, and you are done.
BREAK 15 minutes
4. Virgin Tint to lighten and re-touch (set-up 2 min). She asks you to start; you do a P.D. test, then do the color in one side of the head (doesn't matter which side), apply protective cream, 1/8 partings half inch away from the scalp up to one inch to the ends (leave one inch off the ends) 10 min, outline the section for retouch, and re-touch 2 inches on the roots; do not touch the scalp with the product; 10 min
5. Relaxer and relaxer retouch (2min set-up), apply the protective cream, part sub-partings are 1/4, 1/2 inch away from scalp to the ends, leaving 2 inch off the ends. Stay very little away from the scalp. 10 min. Step back once done. Retouch relaxer 1/4 away from scalp up to 2 inches retouch. Smooth. Step away to show that you are done. Wait for the examiner's instructions.
6.Manicure set up 2 min, SANITIZE the manicuring table, sanitize your hands and the model's hands with a hand sanitizer and do the manicure on one hand.
7. Artificial nail. sanitize at least the index finger, buff the natural nail, place the form under the free edge, apply the primer, make the nail, buff and file, and you are done.
8. Hair removel: arch and waxing of the eyebrows; all products are simulated; not real wax. arch one brow and wax one (pretend). You must show it to the examiner; she will watch. Tweezing; wear gloves. apply antiseptic, tweeze, antiseptic. Waxing; Wear gloves, apply antiseptic under the eyebrow, apply powder, test the wax, wax, apply after waxing lotion. WAX AND ARTIFICIAL NAILS, MANICURE HAVE THE MOST POINTS.

@beauticianist So far, no facials, no make up, and no nail wrap at state board of California. Yes, manicure is performed on a plastic hand, and is up to 35 points, so practice. Good luck!

@lasadgirl28 Yes, so far, these procedures are set procedures, since the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology has issued a handout instructions, and those are procedures stated in it. So far, the students that have taken the new exam have told us that there are no nail wraps or facials, but there is an acrylic nail (just one).

It could be in your state appointment letter and state board web site. State board has the guidelines of what procedures to do, and based on that the kit companies make the kit.

The hair removal is still on the exam; you either get hair removal/waxing or facial at this time. They are high in points, too, and they are the simplest procedures to do. For hair removal you need a doll head, a head drape (plastic cap will do), eye pad or cottons, the cold wax (although you have to show that you are testing the wax as if it is warm), tweezers, cleansing cream, astringent (or after waxing lotion), spatulas for wax application, muslin strips. @CADIGRLS I think you can keep your gloves for both waxing and tweezing, but if you are not sure, changing them won't hurt; you won't lose points; that is.

The only change is that the live model has been replaced with a doll head, and that you have to mount it on the chair with a stand, and the hand is replaced with a plastic hand with nails attached to them. You still have to drape the doll head, and the manicure is the same, except there is nothing to nip. If Alfredo comes to demo again, I will tape him, if he gives a permission again.

@lasadgirl28 For the manicure; you manicure one hand, and then you put the base coat, polish, and top coat on the whole hand (one hand only). For now, they would like to see more of a layer haircut; razor guideline, then elevate the hair at the nape area and layer, then elevate higher and cut the rest of the hair with scissors. The examiner will check your haircut for balance, but, don't worry, it is only 2 points for quality. Feel free to ask more questions.

It is a predisposition test; allergy test, patch test done to determine if the client has allergies to the permanent tint ingredients and it is done inside of the arm or on the skin behind the ear. State Board requires it 24-48 hours before haircolor application; a small amount of color is applied to the skin.

Ours set ups were different, too, before they changed the test content and the way they want the students to pass the test. I have heard it evolves all about saving water,and such, and other things that have nothing to do with the content of the test, but more about the budget part. Also that people can pass the test anywhere (even in the desert, some say) without using a facility.

@nakidme No, I am not familiar with Virginia State Board's Practical Exam. I hope you have the NIC exam that all the states are trying to get to be the same in all states, if that so, our exams will be the same. Your state board website should have guidelines for your practical. This company is called the California Supreme Kit company, but there is also the Western State Kit company, and others, too. Just call them and ask. I think you need to take your own mannequin head; make sure to cut it, so it will be easy to work with, and the hand you get from the California Supreme Kit company and Western State Kit company will sell it to you plain or with the nails attached; it is better to buy it with the nails attached. They also have free classes once you rent the kit.

Hi, it all depends; some students got it in 2 months. I had only a few who got it late. Expect 8 weeks, and be ready to take the exam, if it takes longer: just think of it like having more time to study. This company rents it to you and you pick it up on the day of the test. Oh, you have lost the license because you forgot to pay the fees, that puts me on an alert; I need to check my license's expiration date. Good luck with your test; it is easier then when you got your first license.

In NJ we need a live model. It makes it slightly harder then using a mannequin but then again I'd rather use real hair then the fake stuff.

Yes, there is a facial option or an eyebrow, but when the video was made there was only the eyebrow procedure form all of the facial procedures that were mandatory before.
