Great video with clear expectations of what examiners will be checking for. As the exam will differ from state to state and the requirements may be very different, you did a great job at presenting the cut and proper sanitation procedures! Great job on explaining the video. To all the youtube viewers, there has been a new cosmetologist license test. It's called the NIC Test. Basically, a cosmetologist license test that is the same in all states.

@Dori623 Yes, for the new NIC test, you need to start with the razor; razor guideline the middle of the nape, and then continue cutting with the scissors.

It depends on the state board regulations: ours does not specify whether to cut a certain degree, like 90, 45, etc.; it only wants well blended layer cut. About pulling the hair up: 90 degree could be differentiated by the angle or simply by holding the comb straight out of the head. The comb sits straight up on the top of the head, hence it is 90 degree. 180 degree is the cut where you pull all the hair, including the hair around the occipital and parietal bones straight up to the top.

@DanyelleLuvzMusiQ Yes. They require the back guideline razored, so, if you want to scissor the front guidelines on both sides, you can, but, they emphasize on the back razor guideline. So, if you want, you can cut the entire hair on the back section (half razor, half scissors; the top half), and then continue in the front for scissors, including the guideline. Either way work, as long as you do the BACK GUIDELINE WITH RAZORS. Hope this helps.

@michelemybell55 You welcome! It's always good to know alternate cutting techniques, since people have different hair length and texture. Some precision haircutting techniques require longer time to do, but knowing a faster way would address the needs of those clients, who are in a hurry.

You are right, they do check now, but this video was made before the new state board test, before September 2011, and, at that time, the examiner did not check the haircut. The rest has not been changed.

@shakeenbake777 The procedures for state board are; In the order: blow dry styling and thermal curling; haircutting; chemical waving (perm); Virgin hair lightening application and hair color retouch; virgin relaxer and relaxer retouch; (the state board flyer calls for a facial here, but non of my students have gotten it so far); manicure; sculptured nail; Hair removal of the eyebrows (tweeze and wax each eyebrow). All is done on a doll head and an artificial hand with fake nails attached.

You can cut the hair vertically or horizontally as long as you have established a guideline preferably vertical one; a zero degree, and followed your guideline. State board performance criteria has no restrictions on vertical cutting; feel free to cut anyway you're used to; vertical or horizontal. Good luck! Let us know how you did at State Board.

@misssmiles00 If they have a cosmetology program, they should offer all; hair, face, and nail classes. Maybe you went to a barber school. In California a lot of Beauty Schools offer Cosmetology Programs. Some have part-time evening programs, that take a year or a little more. Try the occupational centers from your local school district, The L.A. Unified School District Adult Education offers Cosmetology classes. You can also try the Private schools at your area that offer financial aid.

+Noah Simonian Things have changed a little since 2011. You can even use a towel, since the model is a doll head now. Each state is a little different, unless they adapted the NIC exam that is uniform. The state board website of your state has instructions for students. The kit companies show demos if you rent their kit.

What is the maximum length you can leave the mannequin's hair length once it is cut?

You need to cut half an inch at least, but you need to leave enough hair to be able to do the other test assignments. Layered hair with the back touching the bottom of the neck is goo. Leaving about 6 inches or more from the scalp is good.
