Former Georgian here! The deer are RELENTLESS! It's taken an 8' fence to keep them out and everywhere I have a shorter fence, I stung rows of barbed wire above. My neighbor uses fishing line with pans from the dollar store in areas and that seems to work for her. LOVE your food forest and am inspired by your retreat!

I absolutely love what y'all are doing! It's incredibly important, not only for you and your loved ones, but for the community. This is inspiring for all, but particularly for other Black folk to witness. P.S. Leaving the land to go wild with weeds occasionally is also good because I believe it allows fertility and biodiversity to multiply! Good choice.

I learned that different weeds come based on different soil needs. Identifying the weed will tell you what the soil is lacking. You can pull those weeds and plant something that you actually want in that spot that does the same thing that the weed is doing, i.e. nitrogen fixing, calcium fixing...etc.

Growing up we had massive gardens and there were also trees and bushes (berry) on several acres. I recently learned way at the end of our property, my dad planted a huge cornfield every year. It was a very high point which required you to walk through the woods and thick brush to reach. Well, the cornfield was for the deer and they pretty much stayed in that area!!! 😆😆😆

BTW, I'd recommend you put a mesh around the berry plants, especially close to you because the birds will eat it all. At least they do around where I am. PS, dears are a problem around here too in MA. The state gives out permits for people to hunt them, which is why I think their population is managed.

I heard that animals speak with there noses and that since the crops are unmarked they can encroach and partake. A viral young male needs to pee on the property to mark it off. Do it often if you are not already aware of the properties of urine in growing food. This is most inspiring to see happening and I am so thrilled to subscribe. 👍🏽✨
