🎵 JS Bach - Prelude and fugue in E-flat BWV 552 | Caen, St-Étienne

JS Bach's 'Prelude and Fugue in E flat' BWV 552 (sometimes called 'St Anne') played by Richard McVeigh on the Hauptwerk organ or Caen, France.
I played this live in an organ recital on 27th June 2020 and I think this piece sounds absolutely SENSATIONAL on this incredible Cavaillé-Coll!

Francis Jackson gave a recital in York Minster some years ago now, and yes he used the 32' reed (Sackbut) at this point. It was very effective, everyone really liked it. I am sure JSB would have used the same resources if available at the time.

Nice! Definitely a “top 10” Bach piece very nicely done. I like the muscular pedal - engage tractor beam 😁. I like how a Cavaille-Coll sound can pull off Bach with clarity and authority just as well as rich sounding 19th/20th century romantic pieces - 👍👍👍

Finally, I got a 3 manual keyboards Hoffrichter console , with a flat pedal board, and the Caen Hauptwerk sample (among others, like Friesach organ). For most of Bach pieces, I find that the Friesach organ is more appropriate, but for romantic pieces, of course Caen organ is perfect, and let's say fabulous. Richard, that was absolutely stunning. I always liked hearing Daniel Roth play this piece at St. Sulpice or Olivier Latry at Notre Dame. I have to say, your interpretation is the best I have ever heard. YOur registrations are absolute genius; your articulation and phrasing is other-wordly. Oh, and I have not seen better or more supple pedal work. You have a prodigious pedal technique. Add to that, you exude joy and pleasure in playing it, and your sense of enjoyment reveals itself in the performance. I was truly touched. Just loved it.

I do love the Cavaille-Colls, to be sure, but the UK, particularly England has fabulous organs, Thank the Lord that the Cavaille-Coll at Notre Dame was saved, It was completely redone and redesigned not too long before the devastating fire. Anyway, this is about your performance. I enjoy your channel and am an awe of your talent. I would love to hear you interpret Virgil Fox's arrangement of Komm Susser Tod on your Hauptwork. I imagine that you have performed that piece over the course of your career.

Great interpretation. My organ teacher when I was just finding my way around the keyboards did the whole Clavierubng in performance, I turned pages, What a monumental piece. With all the chorale preludes inserted, it makes the fugue even more stunningly grand. so to page turning with the i-pad. How did you do it? It was invisible and seamless..

woahhhh i am new to your Chanel but i love your stuff , i had some questions about your set up you have absolutely amazing sound quality! at home i have an Allan ADC4000 and one thing i dont like is that theres no resonance what so ever ,as soon as you let up the note dies but it is an older instrument and it serves its purpose buttt how do i get that type of sound you have!!!

Brilliant! But trying to read the score with the reflection of your curtains on it is difficult 😁. Any chance you could put the score in one of the three small windows on the left? Or would there be coppyright issues? My set of Chapuis LPs (20 records) came with a full set of miniature scores.

Hello, superb sounds, but I am a bit surprised by the brightneess of the mixtures and the reeds, and hence I don't find that the ensemble sounds like a Cavaillé-Coll, did you want this sound ? I think that it is possible to adjust the sounds by equalization. I think of buying a 3 MIDI manuals console coupled to a PC and Hauptwerk, a much cheaper solution than buying a complete digital organ, with finally a better sound result. Jacques, from France. Je pense qu'il y a moyen de régler les sonorités par égalisation. Je songe aussi à acheter une console MIDI à 3 manuels couplé à un PC et Hauptwerk, solution beaucoup moins onéreuse qu'un orgue numérique complet et finalement avec un meilleur rendu sonore.
