its actually sad how brands obsessively separate 'men's' and 'women's' stuff even though for the women's in clothes for example there's all sorts of trends and colours but for men its only dark colours, or for men's skincare there's menthol and fragrance and works worse and is irritating because men feel embarrassed to be 'girly'.

This must’ve been the best video idea and execution for this year! Thank you Fel and Ro for going through this! It’s so difficult to find and get into good man care because of the marketing ongoing around “the feeling of a man” the you first asked them about. One thing I felt like I was missing, was them going into the ingredients while exploring the formulas to kind of “set expectations” and then comment on them after the week had passed. But overall, thank you so much for this video!

I used over the counter mens skin care since middle school because, well, I'm a man. Most of them only have one line of product, completely ignoring that each person have different skin. And surprise surprise, I got the worst skin compared to my friends. Switched to k-beauty last year after a korean friend teaches me each person has different skin and the 10 steps skin care routine. I regret not knowing her 10 years ago. Now I have a lot of homework for my skin, but I really looking forward into it.
@Siberius-

10 steps! I wonder if you could cut out a few and still have the same quality of skin. Now I'm curious, as a gent, how many steps I have... 0. Ponds cold cream make up remover (if I have any primer and maybe spot concealer on). 1. Cleanse 2. Leave-on glycolic acid (AHA) 3. Leave-on salicylic acid (BHA) 4. Moisturiser Okay yea we're done, I thought it might have been longer for some reason. Maybe you are including a day and night routine all as additional steps. In that case I would have... 5 steps. But soon to be 6 steps all up! once The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% is available to me (not the anhydrous one). Then I can use it at the morning too instead of only at night, because it makes my face oily as shit and I don't want that throughout the day. After that I am curious about maybe a hydrating toner, though extra BHA might be all I need. IF I did that twice a day, that would be 8 steps! not far off 10 all of a sudden (for a whole day).
@dputra
@dputra 2 жыл бұрын
@@Siberius- you definitely don't need too much steps for your skin care routine. If you are not trying to achieve anything, then cleansing + moisture (+ sun protection for the day) is the bare minimum that will keep your skin clean, hydrated, and protected. 10 steps is basically ~7 steps and then add some additional routine depending on your condition, like mask every 2-3 times/week, exfoliate every 2-3 times/week, and apply sunscreen for the day. The rest is the same for every morning and night, everyday.
@Siberius-
@Siberius- 2 жыл бұрын
@@dputra - Yea too much can be difficult to make them all work well together, as far as pilling and also wait times and stuff for various reasons. Can take forever. Currently I'm using an oily product because it's all I got at the moment, and it takes HOURS to move on to the moisturiser stage lol. Even then it's still oily. Oh I totally forgot about sun protection. I'm very indoors and only go out for exercise once the sun's UV is below 3. Yea I'm personally already doing a lot more than what most people need, with my BHA and AHA shenanigans, but there's nothin' inherently wrong with a load of steps!

Most men have oily, acne-prone skin which is thicker than women's skin, and plus, they have to shave so that leads to rougher skin. For this reason, the face washes have lots of exfoliating ingredients like scrub beads and so on. But I have virtually not used men's products for years, not even the gentler ones made in Korea because of the fragrance and alcohol!

I was gonna say that a lot of skincare brands could totally branch into the "MEN" market, with "MEN" packaging, but with quality products that smell actually good, or are fragrance free... because a lot of "MANLY MEN" don't really enjoy these products a whole lot (or the scents/sensations). But then I realised that most of the brands in the men's aisle actually have done that, APART from how they went down the psychological minty and "manly" musky/earthy/aftershavey route unfortunately. But there's gotta be a good incentive there for a different company to market to MEN, with actually nice products... Feels like the opportunity is there for the taking with guys who are scared to leave the MENS aisle. Seems "Goodline" may have done this? apparently they're more toned down, at least. Not that I would use any of it.

I feel like you guys could have tried to research the better men's skincare lines/products for this experiment, even if it's drugstore. I honestly stay far, far away from anything labeled as "men's products," especially if they're advertised as "2-in-1" or whatever because you know they be lyingggg to youuuu!!! But aside from *ahem* questionable ingredients and false advertisements, I also have personal qualms with beauty products being gendered just to pander toward a certain demographic's fear of losing their manhoods. Skin is skin, and products work just fine for anybody regardless of their genders as long as your skin type is right for them. So, having to label a product as a "men's product" just to make straight, cis men feel comfortable is ridiculous and has nothing to do with how the products work at the end of the day. I feel like gender-based labeling also further panders and encourages this sense of traditionally masc ideals that makes straight, cis men view skincare as something that is taboo and emasculating because they see it as a "feminine" thing, which is just impeding progress from breaking down that barrier and showing that skincare is okay for everybody to use and enjoy regardless of who you are. Like, honey, is your masculinity really that fragile that you need a product to be labeled as a "men's product" just to feel secure with doing skincare because, otherwise, it'll pose as a threat to you when, in reality, no one gives a shit? Sounds like an unnecessary stressful, restrictively life, tbh. Anyways, thanks for coming to my Ted talk.😬💅

As a gent, I have never even been in the men's specific aisle for skincare products... I have always just assumed they would be more shit, or less pleasant, etc. Same for shower hair stuff, and bodywash, and deodorant. Though most of my products are rather unisex (sometimes with a lean towards women), but you won't ever find them in the aisle specifically for men. I wonder if menthol is used primarily as a psychological trick, much like with toothpaste, to get men to associate using the products with being clean so as men keep using them consistently. One even directly smelled my toothpaste lol. Then the musky earthy scents because if men don't feel like a manly man when doing skincare, that is a potential risk as far as men buying the product goes (or at least men in general are more likely to continue using it more consistently). Also the aftershave smell. 6:40 - Okay yea what she said! Like the stereotypical man (with good enough skin) is prone to seeing these things as useless pointless junk (including the very basics like moisturiser), so you need to give them some indicator of cleanliness other than them having to see the results after consistent use. So, use the minty toothpaste trick. I don't enjoy any of these smells or sensations being on my face. I like fragrance free stuff that doesn't induce any sensations, and for the consistency to be what makes sense for applying the product and it doing it's job correctly. Fragrance with bodywash and shampoo is good, though. But I like them to smell nice, so we're straying quite far from typical man-scents here. My antiperspirant is scentless, and I use benzoyl peroxide on my armpits in the shower (thanks Dr Dray), so they never smell the next day anyway, and for the next at least 3 god damn days after that (I don't sweat that much either). An interesting point was raised in the video. If men are only using kinda shit products, then it makes extra sense for why a lot of them wouldn't see much point, and also I imagine a lot of men don't particularly enjoy the hardcore menthol, even if they are obsessed with being a stereotypical manly man as dictated by the gender norms in the society they live in.

Plus it’s pretty much the same ingredients but loaded with menthol and scents like sandalwood and mint- which can be extremely irritating for some men and not every man wants to smell like outdoors,tobacco or a distillery. I get that men skin is thicker but it doesn’t mean that they deserve very drying and irritating ingredients in their products.

Male here. The menthol is to make us think the product is doing something. It adds nothing 😅

They should just straight up repackage regular skin care products with 'for men' and change nothing else lol

I feel you didn’t use the right brands. Biotherm, Clarins, Clinique have nice products geared towards men…even Rob Lowe has his own skincare line for men. But was a good video 😊

watched the video, phewww thank god i never bought into that marketing for MEN. the menthol on most stuff is kinda making me feel some kinda way and its not positive. i think most straight men would only buy skincare in places they frequent and avoid sephora or any kbeauty store due to toxic masculinity.

having said that, its easy to sell them skincare when they start to branch out of these traditional brands and they have not done any homework on skincare. my bro literally bought a bunch of skincare that is overly priced and no ingredient list available to check on the products and the Korean brand is so unheard of
