It really is! The Trapping Radio Crew is having a big get together next weekend and we'll be eating some of my burgers. Take a good look at how many trees that beaver cut down while snared - and think about what would happen to a paracord snare!
@TheWoodedBeardsman7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was really surprising! Paracord snare a beaver LOL! I do think I could probably catch one by hand if I really tried hard enough, but I'm not sure I would come out with all my limbs hahaaha.
@Meattrapper7 жыл бұрын
The Wooded Beardsman The Indians would make break in a dam knowing the beaver would return to repair it. They would have a long spear and stand motionless for hours at night, the spear the beaver as he got close. That requires Patience and self control!

great video when i saw how you marked the snare with marking tape thought i would share my way of marking traps i go and buy clothes pins the value pack then paint them with high visual paint thay clip right to a branch and are reusable one hint i dont put them right on the trap or snare about 5 feet away that way the thieves have to look for them just a thought thanks again
@Meattrapper9 жыл бұрын
Man that is a great idea! Thanks for sharing. I bet you could even apply some reflective tape and use them as night time reflectors to mark trails to your deer stand or limblines, etc. If it's OK with you, I'd like to use that idea in one of my 'tips and tricks' videos and give you credit for the idea. Have a good one!

The Meat Trapper , Out in the Alaska bush we had NO $ so i cut up reflective license plates & nailed them to trees. Or used bailing wire to anchor them to tree limbs. Getting lost out there at night is life threatning. Had markers on both sides of trees for coming/going & within line of sight of each other. Thick forests easy to get lost in. Last a lifetime. Great lady trooper gave me a whole boxful of turned in plates & went from 2 inch squares to half license plate. SOOO much better/easy to see during blizzards! Another upside. Lost sledders would follow my reflectors to our cabin & saftey & after storms blew over could lead them out to saftey. Storms hit fast & w/o warning & its easy to die out there.

Great video!!!! It's been a long time since I've eaten beaver but it's as good as deer!!! My family has gotten fed up with modern food and we are gearing up to be more and more self reliant!!

Yes it is - it's a little more work and less meat - but there's no limit and no closed season here in Alabama. Also, you can get paid to trap beaver. Getting paid to put meat in the fridge is a great deal!

Never snared beaver. Yotes, wolves, foxes, squirrels martin but never thought of beaver. Used 330 connibars & #4 jump traps set underwater @ their slides. Had otters come along & INTENTIONALLY set off the connies by shoving sticks into em. Same one I caught in an offset connie & released because he was to little & the offset didnt break his neck. Lil sucker spent the rest of that winter season setting off all my connies. Would purposely leave a poo pile near my sets. Smart lil S.O.B.! Live & learn. 😁

Have been looking at kayaks--I favor the open design because I believe I can carry more stuff, with the hope I might be able to kneel at one end as I attach snares at the water's edge. Have you any observations about the superiority of one design over the other? Is 10' adequate for working in tight places with the plan being to plant snares from the boat, without having to step onto the land?
@Meattrapper6 жыл бұрын
The sit on top is definitely the way to go for trapping. But 10 feet is pretty small. Its adequate for setting snares, the issue becomes hauling the catch. My 12 footer is fully loaded with 3 good sized beavers. Look at the weight capacity, then calculate your weight + waders + tools + estimated catch. Then realize that a boat loaded to the gills is hard to paddle, then look at how far you have to paddle. Small ponds is one thing. Open water is another.

I'm just learning to trap, your videos have inspired me to do so, so thank you for that. I have one question if you'd be willing to answer, how big are your loops, and on average how far above the waters surface do you put the snares ? I just set my first 3 tonight in a ditch with visible runs and clear choke points just like this video, but realized after I got home my snares are only about half as much out of the water as yours. I'm going back first thing tomorrow morning, so I can adjust to how you have them here.
@Meattrapper6 жыл бұрын
Utubeman A bvr swims with just his head out of the water. I use a 10-12 inch loop, 1/3 of the loop out if the water, 2/3 under the water. Good luck!
@markdavidmadden886 жыл бұрын
The Meat Trapper thank you for your reply, as it stands now I think my loops are maybe 4 inches out of the water. With some luck, maybe the beaver will duck his head and I'll still manage a catch.

Yes sir, catches very high on the front foot.

What kind of "cable" do you use? You mentioned you attached the snares to cable to allow them to get away from the anchor. I assume you have a snare attached to some sort of "cable" which is then anchored. Just curious on the cable.Thanks. Great representation of subsistence trapping.

Hello! What keeps them from just cutting the cable with there teeth? I know you said the length of the cable helps keep them away from your anchor but are they that stupid that they can't get at the cable itself? And what's your opinion on coniber? Thank you for the vid!
@Meattrapper9 жыл бұрын
The only time they will chew the cable is when they get it wrapped around a tree or log and wind themselves up next to it and find it next to their mouth. Otherwise they are like a dog on a leash with the cable up behind them or around their middle where they can't easily reach it. Even when they chew, I use 1x19 twist cable which is very difficult to chew because the weave is so tight. I use body grips a lot - just depends on the situation. Thanks for watching!

@Meattrapper7 жыл бұрын
Kelly Peterson I'm using slim locks. They are my preferred lock.
@toddmoelker38712 жыл бұрын
I've really appreciated your videos. Maybe my question is dumb but I always understood snares as being killing traps. Doesn't the loop slide tighter and not back off resulting in asphyxiation? In Michigan snares are required to have a stopper on them so that if a dog gets in them it won't kill the dog. Unfortunately the legal size is too big to consistently hold coyote and rarely will hold fox.
@Meattrapper2 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question, and there is no single answer. Whether a snare kills or not depends upon many factors. A snare lock can be relaxing or non relaxing, depending upon the lock being used. A non lethal snare set can be made by using a relaxing lock, and most importantly - making sure there is nothing the animal can entangle themselves in. Also, the type of animal being snared has an impact. For example, a coyote when neck snared almost always freaks out and will strangle themselves, whereas domestic dogs will usually lay down and be waiting on you when you get back. The stops you speak of are actually deer stops, designed to let a deer who gets their leg caught in a snare to pull it out and go on their way. As you correctly state, they suck. In fact, most of the regulations around trapping are idiotic and made by people who have no idea what they are talking about - which is why I have no use for game laws. I respect nature, I respect the animal - but I have zero respect for law enforcement revenue collectors who don't know shit about trapping. Thanks for watching - hope this helps.

Because the animals twist, kink and chew the cable and it will no longer slide smoothly through the snare lock.

Why do you not use a killing snare is it not legal where you live?

Why did you go with a Kayak over a Canoe? A kayak can't carry near the weight that a canoe can carry but is easier to handle, but still a canoe has a 700 pound capacity. So I really wonder how that works out for you?
@Meattrapper9 жыл бұрын
The kayak/canoe debate is tough. A kayak is easier to paddle, less susceptible to wind - but has a lot less capacity compared to a canoe. If I had it all to do over again, I would choose a canoe for trapping; but since I also go to the beach in the summer, a canoe would never work in the ocean like my kayak does. I guess the bottom line is that there is no perfect solution. My kayak will work in the swamp as well as the ocean. whereas a canoe will not. I wish I had the money to buy a canoe and a kayak, but unfortunately I have to make one boat do both. Hope that makes sense,
@parrotbill9 жыл бұрын
That is what I was thinking, I never owned a Kayak before, so I had nothing to go on other than the specs. I'm looking at a 14.5 ft Old Town with weight capacity of 750 pounds. They're a good stable canoe too.
