I think this underscores how important it is to have a good rapport with the model. I always talk to them and get general info before we start shooting like what music they want in the background. as for the shoot I know what lighting I'm using, where I want them to pose, what I want them to wear, I give them reference pictures for the look and feel. it helps so much and like Peter said you better know what you are doing and have a plan don't just show up and be as lost as the model is.

I've watched couple of yours tutorial, and one thing that seems getting obvious is - always have a drink at hand. But on serious note - that line from Peter - I'm model who doesn't know what to do in front of photographer, who doesn't know what to do - that was my aproach until recently. At my very last photoshoot with somehow experienced model, I felt more comfortable to communicate with model the way Peter does.

This confirms what I have said for years. Being a portrait, wedding or travel photographer is only 5% about tripping the shutter. It is the photograher's interpersonal skills, their confidence they give off, the vision, the enthusiasm, the encouragement, the uplifting, the building up of your subject and make them feel important and worthy of photographing, then you need to have a plan of how they are to be portrayed, then execute it, keeping them engaged throughout. I have heard of photographers having issues with children at shoots, which I've not had... as if you keep them busy, having fun and enjoying the process... by the time they come to think about being naughty... you are done ! Keep learning Bec... I reckon you could have done better if you'd have thought ahead! Good learning!

I know that at first most people would think that Peter was trying to make Bec look bad. But the point he makes is solid. Without confidence in your ability and being able to articulate instruction while creating an environment that is both active and successful, gear does not matter. Couple this along with stripping away crazy post editing software and you leave most "photographers" sitting on their thumbs with a goofy stare clueless as to how to get a great image in camera. Great video Peter. Thanks to Bec as well for humoring you with this video as well. Now, I want one of those head shots signed by the both of you! Much Love from the USA!, @goadken
