Hi Peter Oh yes focus peaking on X1D isn't precise enough for portrait work with big apertures and even not usable for any work with the wide angles like the 21mm. The only way for quick precise manual focusing is the automatic loupe or also the manual loupe with the central star button that falls naturally under the right thumb. regards JC
@AMGOSUK4 жыл бұрын
Luv'd it -- I just bought the X1D-II 50C and 6 lenses and 100% agree with the look benefits from MF. I "normally" shoot portraits with a 135mm f/1.8 on a D850/Z7, but now with the X1D-II both the 80/1.9 and 135mm/2.8+TC (on or off) are fantastic. So is the 120/3.5 Macro. In terms of effective focal length the 80mm --> 63 eff(35); 120mm --> 95 eff(35); 135mm --> 105mm and 135mm+1.7TC = 230mm --> 178 eff(35) I "heard" that the 80mm lens with a max aperture of f/1.9 on the 50C is effectively the same as (equivalent) to a 65mm f/1.5 lens on a 35mm sensor. The size of the MF sensor -vs- D850 FX sensor effectively reduces the focal length while also increasing the max aperture the aperture - here are the results of a calc I found: f/1.9 --> 1.5 eff, f/2.8 --> 2.2 eff, f/3.5 -->2.8 eff and the 135mm with TC which is effectively 2.8+1.7 = 4.5 --> 3.5 ---- these "effective" apertures do not I believe fully address the point you made re-fall off (i.e. the reason you shoot MF) -- There is something more than just the maths. I simply find the images shot with the X1D-II more pleasing than very similar images shot with a D850 (a wonderful camera and sensor). I took D4s, D810 and D500 on safari with me to the Etosha and the Chobe river in 2016 , my 3rd African safari that year. I was amazed how much I disliked the quality of images taken with the D500 (particularly in low light) compared to those from the D810. The D500 images seemed "rougher" or "harsher" than those from the D810. That said the D500 provides a 1.5 crop advantage on effective focal length -- turning my 600mm into an effective 900mm. I was not aware that using a crop sensor on an FX lens had any impact on max. aperture. Whereas it clearly does on MF. When I compare images from the X1D-II to those from the Z7 they seem "smoother" -- both produce super sharp images of about 50mp -- the X1D-II RAW file size is roughly double that from the Z7. 16-bit -vs- 14-bit RAW perhaps. Perhaps there is other harshness introduced in the D500 by micro-contrast issues. BTW -- I was surprised you did not ask Becks to fix whatever that was on the right side of her very pert nose.

Great video. Love the shots where Bec is a bit more front lit. Love the catch lights, the intangibles, and the vibe. Would love to see a video about how you adapt your kit and your approach for on location work where you have less control, less gear, less time. Do you have tips and tricks for speed lights? The situation would not be as guerrilla style as Bec at Disney, but would be on location where you are trying to make an image rather than grabbing it. Thanks a lot. Your work brings me a lot of inspiration on the other side of the pond.

Great video Peter and Bec, I am thinking of moving to medium format Hasselblad X1d-ii50c from Canon full-frame. What XCD lens would you recommend? I am stuck between the XCD 80mm/1.9 and the XCD90mm/3.2 and the XCD 135mm/2.8 any suggestions as this will probably be my only lens as of now. Portrait photography would be my main genre along with landscape secondary. Thank you Peter.. John S

Peter, I’m not familiar with the Hasselblad system. That focus peaking thing, is it a problem because of X lenses are focusing by wire and H lenses mechanical? Meaning, you might compare H lenses to the Sony 70-200 GM (1st version), which has a true mechanical focus pull if AF isn’t used. Or is it a problem of the X1D II firmware?
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer2 жыл бұрын
I don't manual focus on the X lenses
@rolandrick2 жыл бұрын
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Ah ok, now I get it, that in the video about 21:40 with the focus peaking was only giving it a try. I’m thinking of getting an old H5D with a 80mm and 40 or 50 megapixel back or a X1D II, but I’m yet not sure with which system to go. I’m used to work with the Leica M since the 1980’s, so manually focusing wouldn’t be an issue. It’s more a psychological thing for me, on the one hand I like that traditional H style, on the other one is the X tempting for street and other outdoor stuff. - There will never be a thing such as the perfect do it all camera 😵💫

Hi -- while I luv my Hasselblad X1Dii and the same lenses are you are using - I do find it goes hunting for focus AND for some reason since updating the firmware many of my standard settings seem to be deleted each time the camera turns off. The images from this camera are so much "better" than those from my D850/Z7.

Hi Andy, I can't comment too much on the Hasselblad myself because I won't have my X1Dii til the end of November, but I do know the autofocus isn't super quick. @Peter Coulson I am curious Peter. I am thinking of a medium format camera. I realize I won't be able to do speed/action so I still have my a7rii. Yet instead of going for an a7riv or more Sony, to which I have plenty of prime lenses, I am wanting something richer. I feel the Sony is great but missing depth or that feel I just can't seem to get. (I mean the richness like with my Leica Q. That kind of feeling that I am missing even though my Sony images are cool for sure.) How would you feel on the hassy ii for this entree into med format? Have you tried the Fujis yet? Hi Gigi, the X1Dii is a great entry into medium format, and it's the cheapest way to get into medium format & Hasselblad, but yeah you are right it's not a sport camera, it's more aimed at portrait and landscape, it wasn't designed for speed.
