I did a cover of this song years ago (it's on KZbin), but I was never satisfied with it. So now, I did it again - but this time, Beatles-style! My main goals were 1) more emphasis on Vox Continental organ, 2) a melodic McCartney bass line, 3) closer Lennon/McCartney harmonies.
I screwed up the lens focus on the guitar shots, so I decided to include chord diagrams to distract my viewers from this obvious technical error. ;) I tried to provide two chord positions to show how you can use two different guitars to have variation.
As far as the harmonies, Mike Smith's original arrangement is wonderful. The only change I've implemented over the years (including my original from a decade ago) is that I like to raise the low harmony during the bridges on two sections - "I don't think of you" and "makes me blue." In my imagination, I feel that Lennon would have travelled upwards with McCartney, similar to "If I Fell." On the "makes me blue" part, raising the low harmony allows you to emphasize the augmented chord as well - a very tested Beatles technique.
Doubt anyone will notice this detail, but my violin bass changed. Yes, it's the real deal. ;) Hofner "Mersey" handmade in Germany, identical specs to Paul's. Only took me a decade to save up the cash! And a year of waiting for them to craft it. Really thrilled with the woody bass tone the Hofner provides. More details on this wonderful instrument coming soon!

To be honest, the original already sounds very Beatlesque! But this is still a really good cover. I’m glad to see you’re still doing these Beatles style covers after all these years. You’re sounding great as ever :)

The original sounded NOTHING like the Beatles. Some people refuse to give the DC5 any credit.

@@bjbell52 I was a huge fan of DC5, and still enjoy their music. But there is no denying that the original harmonies on "Because" are very similar to songs like "This Boy" by the Beatles. Noticing similarities between artists in no way detracts from either artist. DC5 filled the early to mid sixties with lots of joy! Actually, to my ears, Nick's version here still sounds a lot like the original DC5 track.

Nick, I'm a huge fan, you give a lot of inspiration to me. How did you learn to sing so good, did someone give you lessons or you just found out you could do it? The reason I'm asking is although I can sing in tune, my tone and projection are utterly horrible and I've tried everything to improve it but I still sound like crap, any tips on how I can improve?
@NickMartellaro
@NickMartellaro 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I have never had lessons, I'm self taught. Unfortunately, I can't read music, either! The answer to your question is the typical boring one, but...just keep practicing. Sing everywhere you go, in the car, in the shower, enough to annoy your wife/husband, you get the picture. Oh, and don't forget that what you hear on my recordings is the result of multiple attempts - sometimes you'll be hearing take 19 or 20 as the final track! Before autotune, musicians would just sing it over and over again until they got it right. The Byrds' cover of "Turn Turn Turn" famously took 78 takes until the band was satisfied!

How does it feel to have a Hofner bass? You said you like the Rogue more.
@NickMartellaro
@NickMartellaro 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, it's not a fair comparison as the Hofner is expertly hand-crafted in Germany and the Rogue rolled off a factory line. The Hofner sounds absolutely amazing and is super light because it's hollow inside. You can even play it as an acoustic bass, it's loud unplugged. The Rogue is a great instrument too, but it has a sustain block through the middle - not a true hollow body. Much heavier. My Rogue is fantastic, but it's also a much older model made in Korea - the new ones aren't the same quality, unfortunately. All in all, though, the Hofner is definitely the "premium" instrument. One thing that most people don't know is that there's no fret markers on the neck, so "expert mode" is baked in. That's how Paul's is, too!
