Eh, I see it more as how other bands and artists took clear cues from the sound they established on OK Computer. Coldplay, for example, doesn’t sound like any 1-to-1 ripoff of OK’s overall sound (from what I’ve heard), but you can absolutely see the influence dripping off of their most popular records, especially the more ambient or ethereal qualities of Radiohead’s work.

I think this album is rated the right amount. It’s a fine record, it has its (rabid) fans, it debuted on the billboard top 10, hell it even got a Grammy nod - but it didn’t light the world on fire and definitely didn’t have the impact or the reverence that OK Computer did and does. I think the issue with a lot of Donald's work is that he sets up a lot of dots for the audience without connecting them. This leads the audience to do the connecting themselves and can have everyone arguing over random things that were/weren't intended in his art. I think Donald tried his best to say everything he possibly could about the internet and then try to squeeze all those thoughts into the album, screenplay, clapping for the wrong reasons, live tour etc. But this left us with a lot of "unfinished" points making the audience connect them. All this to say that I think Because The Internet touched so many different ideas, but didn't complete all of them, that's why people don't give it the credit Donald thinks it deserves.

But one can argue that that's the point of art. Art is not about telling people how to feel. It's about giving audiences to tools to figure it out on their own. The problem with this era of millions of KZbin "explanation" videos is that it leaves no room for personal interpretation. How you feel about an artist's work can be drasticaly different than the artist--that's fine. Because you're supposed to draw in your own personal experiences when consuming someone else's work.

I think this statement is easy to misunderstand because OK Computer can be dissected a thousand different ways, as can Because The Internet. I'm not saying Gambino is correct, but you could arguably make the case it speaks to the culture of anxiety and detached apathy affecting a demographic similar to the one the artist grew up as. It also wouldn't be out of character of Donald Glover for this to just be a troll to provoke people. Just a thought.

I haven't watched yet, and I'm not the biggest Radiohead fan so the analogy is even further lost on me, but I despise when analogies are given in this form. Conversational, yeah its fine whatever, but if you're being serious, there's no way to interpret it. If he's saying BTI is to rap, as OKC is to prog rock, maybe that makes sense (though in terms of influence, hell no), but there's no way of knowing. By leaving the latter comparison out, it's like you said, literally 1000 ways to dissect. its almost meaningless.

BTI is great. To me, it’s in the pantheon of records like Blond, Igor, KSG, Circles, etc. where you hear it and immediately think that the person making it set out to make the best album of all time to them. Those are always my favorite records. It’s the kind of album that someone says “got them through high school/college”. I think you can debate which records are better (like, clearly Blond and Igor and Fantasy are all better musically) but just that immediate impact that lends itself to years worth of nostalgia can’t go unnoticed. BTI is definitely an album thats slept on in the hip-hop community, and I do feel like people won’t give it the proper credit until something like Glover’s death. Anyway, I respect the dude for making that bold of a statement. It’s never bothered me to see people hype themselves up like that, even if it could be seen as pretentious. I don't exactly know on what grounds they're similar. It's much easier to see MBDTF and Yeezus as the OK Computer and Kid A, respectively, of the rap catalogue, given the huge stylistic shift. An artist culminating one era of their discography with a critically acclaimed record, and starting a new one with a polarizing, stripped down, genre-bending, and innovative new one. Seems like Donald Glover is just making a comparison based on the themes of both albums, but there are lots of other artists who've touched on the same subjects.

@@quietman208 Camp is just a bad album. even if I were to ignore the corny punchlines and racism my main problem with it is how poor his delivery is along with not sounding good when rapping at all. It's like if you got someone from your school who could rap well to do an album but they never really sound professional or now how to carry themselves on a hip hop track. I think the people who still love this album either have big nostalgia for it, it got them into hip hop and never compared it to other hip hop albums, or they haven't really sat down and listened to it in years; even in this interview Donald doesn't like it all that much saying that it's more there for novelty reasons rather than being good. Even if you saying that its an album of it's time I'd bring up Section 80, Sideline Story, or even Goblin to an extent and you'll see that those albums still sound nice after all these years (maybe not so much with Goblin) whereas Camp sounds the least professional out of all of them and the funny part is that those are some of those artists' first major projects as well.
