Re - Travis Scott: There is no right answer. If you want to listen to Travis's music, that's fine, it does not make you a Travis apologist. If you can't, that's fine too, you are not a soft-skinned hater. Everyone has a different ability to ignore or forget what the artist did, a different capacity to not dwell on it. I find I can separate art from artist in most cases, especially artists who were before my time, but sometimes it's just too heinous. I loved The Lostprophets, but I will never be able to enjoy the music I know I would and could enjoy, if only I wasn't constantly reminded of the utterly horrific things the lead singer engaged with. With kids. I'll leave it at that.

Honestly i have a hard time with this discussion because i don't believe Travis is responsible for this. His one job was stepping out on stage to perform, and maybe being a creative director for the festival. He wasn't in charge of ensuring people's safety during the performance. Paying close attention to the audience doesn't seem to be a given with him due to the whole raging thing. There's somebody behind the scenes that fucked up.

separating the art from the artist is tricky when the art is a direct reflection of the artist. short answer is yes, but if some ppl are put off by it due to the brand of "rage" and recklessness in Travis's music (which ended up killing people) I don't blame them at all. of course, blame livenation more than Travis tbh. they're more responsible for it than anyone else.

Idk if Travis’ “brand of rage and recklessness” killed people as much as the poor event planning, lack of medical tents, and water stations did. I’m not trying to say Travis doesn’t deserve a share of the blame (he definitely does) but the fact that people are boycotting Travis while also completely ignoring Live Nation’s extremely large role in the tragedy is sad.

yeah, agreed, I also don´t know, if there are definite lines that need to be drawn. When it comes to nazis, sex offenders etc. I often struggel with my morality. It is easier of course if it isn´t reflected in the music. Supporting them is off the table with such serious shit for me.

Everyone draws their own line imo, and the only person who gets to draw that line is them. But again, that’s my line, it may be different for someone else.

Record labels, Hollywood, and the entertainment industry as a whole has bred this idea of pushing the individual, pushing the persona, or pushing a brand rather than focusing on the media itself that is produced by those said entities. Its lead to a culture of praising celebrities for their art rather than praising the art itself. This type of human commodification has soiled what it means to actually consume art. The fact of the matter is that streams are really just a collection of numbers, artists get paid in piss droplets for their streams from a streaming service, the value from the streams derives from influence. Look at how travis scott kickstarted his career, by using botted streams and a way to influence people into giving him a platform for his career. Once an artist loses credibility from perhaps an outside factor, then their streams aren't a justification for influence. I mean, R Kelly has 4.5 million monthly listeners on spotify but he can't do shit with these numbers, it's like the name "R Kelly" has become worthless like a fallen stock price. The whole idea of supporting artists by streaming their songs was pushed by Spotify in order to get people to buy their expensive service, the reality is that as an individual consumer, you practically have no power to do anything to support an artists career. This is why it was never NOT ok to listen to Travis Scott's music, or anyone else's for crying out loud. I understand if you personally are uncomfortable listening to someone's music after something that they have done, but don't abstain yourself due to an economic reason, you don't have the power to affect someone's pocket. P.S. Although you don't have as much power as a consumer, it should be noted that abstaining from buying merch is the best way to not support an artist. The margins are very high for clothing, they make the most money off of clothes.

As an artist myself I understand that there’s a separation between the artist and art. No one of my songs represents me as a person. I don’t even emotionally identify with some of my songs anymore, but other people do. The relationship with someone and a song is entirely contained by the listener. The artist has nothing to really do with it. When people say “is it ok to listen to __?” I always say yes, although it is sus af if someone mainly listens to NSBM or other forms of music with bigoted themes lol

Also an artist and I'd say that your experience is not universal, all of my art is deeply personal. I'd also say that for me the line gets iffy when the art does line up with the artist. Travis talking about raging and moshing in songs just is different now that people are dead. Jimmy urine of MSI making pedophilia jokes and using imagery of young women's underwear just is different now that he has been called out for being a pedophile. That's not to say just don't make art about unsavory things, it's just nessisarly different if you also do that stuff. I also wouldn't want my art to inspire someone to do something awful.

@@hazelschannel162 that's exactly my point, the experience is not universal. I would not judge you at all for choosing not to listen to certain artists for the reasons that you have. I also wouldn't judge other people for still listening to it. I'm not sure how common it is for art to "inspire someone to do something awful" these days. I'm sure most people throw on a Travis Scott song because the beat goes hard, and they don't think about it much beyond that. I wouldn't ruin those peoples' time who are doing nothing wrong by forcing my own moral compass on other people. And don't get me wrong, my art is very personal. It's just that songs get old and people change over time. And no one of my songs represents my entire being.

You honestly might as well say you dont care and the music too good be honest with yourself instead of making that excuse imo. Also there are levels for what a person does that would make you stop listening like R.Kelly I can't listen to him cause his personal life is directly connected to his music. I’ve definitely lost some love for Travis but I’m still going to listen to his music. I have listened a lot less since the incident because it didn’t feel right, but as time has gone by I think it’s felt like less of a stain on his actual music and when Utopia comes out I’ll probs be all over it. It’s good to see that even if it’s just to save face, he’s made steps to aid those affected and has been forced into having a better awareness around concert safety. It’s just unfortunate the worst had to happen for this to occur. Lastly, as Fantano said, it’s not like he’s directly responsible for the incident, there were many factors, but he was still completely in the wrong and it may be hard to ever look passed it no matter how much of his music I listen to.

It's a case of seperating art from artist for me. I absolutely think it's understandable that certain people can't bring themselves to listen to his music given his response to the whole Astroworld thing, but I personally don't let a person's public persona get in the way of enjoying anything they've produced, because it doesn't automatically tarnish its quality for me. Same thing with all the allegations around Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, writer on Astonishing X-Men, director of Avengers and Age of Ultron). I also think that Kanye West as a person is delusional and ego-centric as all hell, but I'm not going to just blacklist albums like 808s and Heartbreaks or MBDTF from my Spotify downloads because of that because it doesn't change my opinion on those albums overnight, especially since certain products were made before I was given new perspective on them as individuals outside their work

Let's argue: The Emaj7 played in the guitar intro to this video is out of place with the 3 previous chords Fantano plays, being G, C, and A. The A sounds like it may be a secondary dominant leading to D but instead Fantano plays an Emaj7, creating a jarring transition that is not smoothed out with any chords after it that might establish why an Emaj7 makes harmonic sense in this context. And then, even worse, he loops it? Light 3. I appreciate the bold direction but I was expecting more.

I really can’t disconnect the music from an artist because it’s like buying a carpet from a carpet seller who did what happened in Travis’ case. And I think that’s the whole problem with consumption blindness. People don’t care anymore where the stuff comes from they listen to, wear or eat. I listened to Travis so much but now I hear his voice and I feel so weird letting him entertain me with his music when I’m actually so pissed about him behaving like a careless child on stage. I really don’t understand how it’s possible to disconnect both things and support someone with views and streams when you don’t support the person. It benefits them. And a person having benefits after all of this is not right imo.

I don't tell people what to do or think and I can only speak for myself. When it comes to questions like this I try to live in ignorance. Besides their art, I try not to get too involved with stars or musicians in this case anymore cause sooner or later you find out that many of your heros did things that you don't agree with, are jerks to a certain degree and have major flaws. Then again, why should they be different from us. Nobody is perfect and we shouldn't easily judge others. To make it simple, there are certain lines that a cannot be crossed in my opinion. Everyone draws these lines at a different point. For me, when certain lines are crossed I just can't seperate art and artist. I didn't answer the question to that concerning Travis for myself to a 100% yet. Damm, Iam bad at explaining stuff like that.😅

Feel like he got caught up in his ambitions and started valuing money over fans, which led to him designing astroworld to sell tickets and not for people to have a good and safe time. I work at a music venue and it’s the venue and performers responsibility to keep the show safe for the audience. They were clearly over capacity. Those young people who lost their life’s should not be in vein and stricter measures should be taken to protect future concert goers. When it comes to drugs - the security and venue can only do so much - the audience has to police themselves. After most shows we find a lot of drugs on the ground and people are mixing it with alcohol while being in the crowd with no breathing room. I’ve been to two Travis Scott shows - one at opera house in Toronto Canada 🇨🇦 and One at a music festival in Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 I had so much fun at both and never felt unsafe - I did wish I was taller or arrives a bit earlier to get a tiny bit closer. Re: the titular topic I've been thinking recently about whether it's moral to buy albums and singles from artists who are horrible people or who have done gross things in the past. Whenever someone criticizes Spotify and Apple Music because they pay artists horribly, I think that's valid, but what if the artist is 6ix9ine, R. Kelly, Mindless Self Indulgence, etc.? Is piracy a better option in those cases, or should you still pay those artists fairly for their music? Also, my favorite overused comments are the wholesome yet absurd ones like, "Thank you for picking up my sister from softball practice yesterday, Anthony." Even when they're not funny, I do enjoy seeing them.

For me I think it's if the art being made portrays the actions they did I don't think it's possible to separate things. Like with mindless self indulgence the pedophilia is in the music. Also if they are alive and still acting shitty I don't want to support that, for example JKR consistently donates to anti-trans stuff, I don't want my money going there. If the music doesn't have anything like that in it I think it's fine. Like Cornelius doing horrible stuff to a disabled person when he was young is not present in the music. But that doesn't nessisarly mean you have to support the guy if you are disabled.

Art vs. Artist: I've struggled with this myself. At this point, having some experience under my belt, I sometimes worry about an artist (no matter the medium) I find myself invested in - I worry that one day it will be revealed that they're a horrible person... and I'll no longer be able to appreciate the art they create. This sounds like a selfish issue, but it's true for everyone. The more removed an artist is from what they create, the easier it may be to deal with - For example, if it turns out that a beloved talented actor is a time-traveling Hitler, well, I'd no longer be able to watch them - because actors, the person, are right there. There's little separating them from their craft. The distance of removal may be a factor. Whereas, if the artist is, say, a sculptor... I don't know. I do have issues. For example, unlike the writer featured in the video, I can no longer enjoy any music associated with Michael Jackson. It's a personal thing - That's also impacted by society. Example, you might not want to say you still enjoy work by [insert artist here] as others will judge you. That's how it often works. Hopefully, an individual has healthy boundaries and a moral compass that works and does what's appropriate for them. Certainly, I wouldn't want to financially support an artist that is an awful individual, nor be guilty by association. For me, it's about what I think and feel. I'm not so sure I care what others think in most instances. It's an interesting topic to ponder. The separation of art from the creator. I tend to fall onto the side of not separating the two. It's not a black and white topic. There are a lot of nuances. I'm all for second chances, if it's genuine. Treating someone rudely: You don't have to understand or know the context and/or history someone in this arena. There's no excuse for anyone to treat others rudely or be mean to someone. If you do this - if you're a bully, well, you're in the wrong. You're an a**hole. Even if you're dealing with someone you don't like, you can be civil to them. It 100% reflects poorly on you. Here's a wonderful example: Look at almost any debate the late, sorely missed and irreplaceable Christopher Hitchens participated in. Nothing else need be said. Runaway lyrics: Well, if it serves the song, then it works - even if it's unpleasant. It's interesting because the artist in question falls under the first topic - Artist vs Art. I can't do Kanye. He's just an awful, toxic and dangerous (absolutely) person with seemingly no regard for how his actions impact others. He's terrible... and terribly overrated. Bob Marley: This is more about Anthony than the topic. I don't appreciate the "white" Santa Clause reference being brought into the equation. Do things like this happen from all people? Yes. That typed, No. Just no. Albums being named a color: This doesn't reflect well on the writer. It also isn't accurate (Weezer albums aren't all named after a color). Regarding Coi Leray: Again, there's no excuse for people to be mean to others. Period. This is not recent behavior. Humans have sadly always behaved poorly. Today we just more of it.

i'm surprised so many people still don't separate the artist from their music. unless their music is shoveling their ideas as gospel or is about them being the shitty person they are irl, i say keep the 2 apart, i enjoy travis' music, kanyes, etc. even if i don't agree with things they've done.

I don’t get why people have a problem with Kanye lyrics (like the one mentioned in the Runaway comment). If anything, that kinda stuff endears me to him more. I feel the same way about the bleach line in FSMH, it has literally never bothered me at all. The fact that Ye mixes that kind of grandiose production with (some) lyrics that do not match the feel of the song has always been a positive for me, I mean where else are you gonna get stuff like that

If anything it makes kanye look like shit amongst his features and production. Bleached asshole lyrics could easilly be replaced with something not so joke worthy and wouldn't even have to be having this discussion of defending a dumb line and calling it "endearing" when its on par with a sick animation line. Like yeah its funny. But it also furthers the kanye cant write but is a good producer shtick full on.

I’ve been listening even during the tragedy, I think ppl should separate the art from the person, I don’t respect Travis at anymore especially after that bogus apology, but Brody got bangers which is undeniable, it similar with Kanye, I listen to ye 24/7 but he be saying some outlandish things for no reason but the music is always amazing
