No matter the form this moment takes, its always such an impactful one in the series. This on its own is Sanji's whole being, why he doesn't laugh at the dreams of others, why he would give up so much to protect Zeff, why he has such an immense kindness too him. You have the same dream as Me.

There's a line earlier in the arc, after Sanji feeds Gin, where Zeff asks the Baratie staff "Have any of you ever been starving? Do you have any idea what agony that is?" As a kid, going back and reading that line again after seeing Sanji and Zeff's backstory is what made me realize the power of foreshadowing as a writing tool

Knowing Sanji story later, this his double hard. After having such a rough childhood, after being beaten, tortured, told that he was useless by his own blood parent... And after he finally escapes that horrible situation, a stranger just does this for him, out of nowhere... This is why Zeff will always be his Real Father, no matter what.
@Chaosmancer7
@Chaosmancer7 Жыл бұрын
It is an extreme example, but it is also a deeply important one I think. Nothing from Sanji's childhood with Germa is visible in him. Everything until Whole Cake island is Sanji, Zeff's Heir. His name (Blackleg), his fighting style, his love of food, everything except his attitude towards women. Which, in a way, tells us that all the harm, all the trauma, all the defining things from Germa... all of it was swept away by Zeff. A stranger who owed him nothing, and showed him kindness, showed him his place in the world, and validated him. Always be kind, because kindness can reshape the world.

With future context, this hits even more. Sanji finds a bottomless kindness from an unexpected source. And what did he do to earn it? He was sincerely, honestly, just himself.
@WatanukiProductions

Kindness he didn't have to earn, a debt he didn't have to repay. Sanji in that moment experienced pure paternal love from a stranger. With all the trauma we later learn Sanji has gone through you can see why Sanji became obsessed with paying Zeff back by being useful to him. See why Sanji is so defined by self sacrificial kindness. How even hundreds of chapters later he is still learning to rely on other people and value himself. Still grappling with the idea that he has value beyond his utility. Sanji isn't my favorite character... but god I think he's the deepest and best written in all of One Piece.

God I'm so glad this got a longer video than other ones in this series. I think Baratie was what made me realise this series was special, and I'm so glad I'm not alone in that. One Piece, particularly early on, excels at the humble and quiet moments characters experience. Zoro eating the dirt covered riceball + Sanji and Zeff stuck alone slowly starving are some of my favourite scenes with these characters. "You have the same dream as me."

Despite rumors to the contrary, Oda is still human. One day, Skyen will run out of best One Piece panels. Then he'll upload a 20-hour compilation of all his "best panels of One Piece" shorts and it will become the most-watched 20-hour video on this website that isn't a single song playing for 20 hours.

@timothymclean
@timothymclean Жыл бұрын
@@grizzlyowlbear3538 Probably not, or at least not by much. At time of writing, there are 1,093 chapters of _One Piece._ Most of the videos in this series are around a minute; many are several seconds shorter, one is almost three minutes, but let's call it an even minute each. One minute per chapter would be 18 hours and 13 minutes-still less than 20 hours. In order to exceed 20 hours at one minute per chapter, Eichiro Oda would need to publish at least 1200 chapters, which would probably take two and a half years. Does Oda have another two and a half years of _One Piece_ in him-of story ideas, of passion, of the the near-weekly Shonen Jump art schedule and avoiding health emergencies? Maybe. Wouldn't shock me. Does he have five? It's far from certain. I've heard people talk like One Piece is preparing to wrap up its main plot, though. Does he have the nine years and change he'd need to reach the next round number of hours? Seems unlikely. 20 hours seems like a better guess than 25.

Just did a quick calculation of average video lengths in this series. According to my calculations, the average length of these shorts (including the 3-minute one) is 60.7 seconds, 1.17% higher than my calculations assumed. Which I believe chops about a month off the time it would take Oda to reach 25 hours of shorts.

This is one of THOSE moments. The “Oh my god, One Piece is fantastic” moment for me will always be the “I wanna live” moment with Robin. I think that's why one piece holds a special place in a lot of people's hearts. For me it's because one piece sort of represents this idea of finding people who believe in you believe in the world that you want to see. I have dyslexia and it makes my life so much harder than it should be but I remember the day that I found manga and while it was still difficult to read it was made easier by the way that it's printed. One piece was the first longer that I really read and I admit that I was little too young to really understand it and I have watched the horrible 4Kids dub but the more that I read it the more that I realize that I wanted to be like the characters Luffy was a representation of what I wanted to see in the world actual change good people labeled as bad but Freedom Above All Else freedom from the depression the ostracisation the loneliness that comes with being neurodivergent and poor and everything else is manga is amazing and even though I like her a lot of people have made the it will be the heat death of the universe and one piece will still be going jokes I love what the story is and what it represents

Those words, to me, are THE moment that truly made Sanji look up to Zeff. It is the moment that shows him how much he must value his dreams and what he must be willing to do in order to chase them, or at the very least help another doing the same. This is the very foundation of the connection between the two and the beginning of father son bond between them. Heck, in it's own way, this is probably the most impactful display in all of Onepiece, and the greatest example of a bond between two characters. One, I don't think, even the bond between Shanks and Luffy can rival (after all, it's one thing to lose a limb for a person, it's quite another to eat one for someone else).

I totally didn't tear up just watching this short. Nah, it is just rain, localized entirely within my room. Jokes about my crying aside - Sanji is possibly my favourite character in One Piece, and his dynamic with Zeff will forever be unique magic to me. To an outsider, these two hate each other. Only reason they don't kill each other is either some weird agreement or resentment so hard they both think 'he isn't worth me killing him'. But under that you see a master and a student, sharing the wild dream, with master equiping his pupil with everything he needs to achieve what his teacher could not, and who despite their explosive arguments - deeply care for each other. You see a father and son.

You could argue we get a bit of this earlier in the series with Shanks, but I think Zeff is the first time we properly see the thoroughline of the series kind of laid out. The idea of inherited will we see with Luffy getting Shanks' hat, Zoro taking on the dream of Kuina and even Usopp wanting to be a great warrior of the sea similar to his dad. Each of the cast has some comically large dream and each of them wants to be free, whether it be free to do what they want, to pursue their goals or to spread that freedom to others. But there's something special about how these flashbacks lay out these themes of dreams will and found family that hit so hard. For me, I grew up a very lonely kid who didn't fit in anywhere and often got pretty harshly bullied for my quiet, awkward, and shy demeanour. My two favourite characters that still rip my heart out are Chopper and Robin. At one point, I got really close with this group of friends, and because my home life was abusive, I used to spend almost every afternoon at my best friend's house. She had a wonderful, caring mother she used to abuse in front of me, and it broke my heart because what I wouldn't give for someone like her in my life. This friend decided one day decided they were tired of me and shunned me from the group. I tried talking to her, but she'd refuse to talk to me, and because they were scared of the same thing happening to them, everyone else followed suit. I dropped out after a few months because suicidal ideation was only getting worse, and years later, the other friends apologised for not standing up for me or reaching out, but it was too late. I almost didn't make it. Since I dropped out, I had some spare time (aside from work and community college), so I decided to re-watch One Piece. Turns out, after everything I had just gone through, seeing two characters described as monsters who should die and had to really fucking struggle to find people that loved and cared about them, really hit home. Theres a few scenes and lines in both arcs that hit hard. Chopper bringing Hiriluk the mushroom, Hiriluk's last words, the cherry blossoms at the end of the arc. Jaguar D Saul's speech to Robin and Robin screaming at the crew to take her with them. This series is beautiful and at times, brutal.

I think this moment is a really good example of the netflix show not entirely understanding why these scenes are impactful. In the netflix show he does a big speech about the all blue in an attempt to be big and grand but he's just saying everything he's feeling, and then after that hes says "you shared my dream". In the manga, that line is kind of a shocking moment where you (and sanji) realise that despite being an old pirate who has undoutably hurt a lot of people and has seen the worst of the world, inside him, is the same kid weve gotten attached to throughout this backstory. Zeff never has to explain himself, the entire story up to this point has told us how important dreams are.

I always found this arc to be the best of getting to the core of a character. How Luffy sees Sanji feeding gin and knows deep down in his bones that Sanji is the chief he is looking for. Food is an important thematic ingredient in one piece. So it makes sense the introduction arc for their chief would hammer home Why that is. That kindness, sympathy. Everyone who has lived has tasted hunger at some point The act of sharing food is one of the most fundamental acts of empathy that exists. Something even animals understand. So to be a cook one must be truely empathetic. To have stood at the brink of starvation and dedicating yourself to preventing others from suffering like that is truly noble. That is the kind of man the king of the pirates needs on his crew

And this is how you create legendary moments. While some people may be fixated at how “childish and goofy” One Piece is or supposedly “what it has become” (even though technically that has usually been the case), some seem to quickly forget that One Piece had these moments of great tragedy (or in Sanji’s case: Survival). The fact that Zeff never told Sanji anything and just misled him for so long until Sanji confronted him and finding out that he only survived because he ate his own leg. All because they share the same dream. Truly one of many reasons why One Piece is a standout series. That and a good reason to stretch out this chapter retrospective to more than a minute.

Dreams are an important part of one piece. Be it hero or villain, almost every major character is defined by their dream.

Sanji has a powerful backstory, and this is one of the best moments. Chasing your dreams truly is One Piece.

That chapter in the manga, scene in anime is why I loved sanji so much. Then the old cake island arc, just added to my love for him. He might be a simp and cringy at times, but i love his kindness to others and i love how luffy was the first one to see it in the crew.

I remember watching One Piece on ripped DVDs back when I was in highschool cause internet was not so accessible for me. I binged from ep 1 to 160 during my summer vacation, and this scene.... This hit me so suddenly and so deeply in a way I was just NOT ready for. I was invested in the show by the time this rolled by. Very invested. And seeing why Sanji is the way he is and the kind of person Zeff really is tugged at my emotions so hard that its not something I experienced in very many animes.

TBSkyen getting to talk about this chapter in the midst of the pearl chapters must have felt like when Gin finally received a warm meal from sanji after a long bout of starvation. Finally, some good fucking food

I can't wait for the moment from arlong Park after this. The moment I'm sure most of us remember as the moment we truly became one piece fans.

oda loves the trope of "seemingly uncaring master is mildly abusive towards apprentice but its always secretly from a point of pride or love." he puts it everywhere and almost always executes it very well. he might have some father issues

One of my biggest gripes of the LA One Piece adaptation is the fact that they have Zeff discard and throw away perfectly good food

A great sign of Oda’s wonderful writing is that, even though the reveal of Sanji‘s family isn’t until much much later than this, and was more than likely not intended as his original backstory. The reveal of his childhood before he had ran away and found himself on that very ship that was attacked by Zeff. Makes what happens here, somehow, even stronger. Because for Sanji Zeff does all of the self sacrifice for a complete stranger, and until this moment, he never really had that at least from a guy. Here’s some random pirate, who not only saved him from drowning, but gave him all of the food and resorted to eating his own leg instead of taking the kids, food, or (since he is willing to eat human) the kid, And does all of that because they had the same dream. Is it any wonder that Sanji was able to give up so much for this guy? I mean, even before the reveal of his childhood, Zeff was already considered the father he never had.
