Also, yeah I was seeing the dark shadow figure too is why I started punching, this was back when I didn't really know what it was. Now I just wait til it ends or move the 1% of my body continuously until my neurons fire off and I gain control my nerves again. Just gotta find the 1%, usually a toe or finger.

Around the time I became an adult I started having sleep paralysis frequently. At first it terrified me and made me think it was demons because of supernatural shows on tv. One time I heard a dog growling and turned my eyes to see my dog sleeping on the side opposite to where the growling was coming. My dog was silent and there was growling coming from the other side, it was terrifying. Now that I live alone without roommates i have it even more often than before. I’ve learned the fastest way out of the terror is to use all your strength to move a part of your body and slam it against something, or to try and fall off the bed. The shock wakes you up instantly. I also find sleeping on your back basically guarantees sleep paralysis.
@Spiderfreak.
@Spiderfreak. Жыл бұрын
depends on the person it's occurring to but I have the same trigger as well. If I sleep directly flat on my back it occurs. How I manage to get out of sleep paralysis is to gently move your fingers and toes, even if they feel like they are stuck just a tiny bit of movement will make the brain realize you are still awake and should kick you back into reality and wake up properly. But do keep trying to wiggle them even if you are awake, do so until you have full control again.

I had this twice. Once in the middle of an exam where I had my eyes planted on my arms so instead of hallucinating demons in front of me, it was a torture chamber that looks like it comes from a crossover between Portal and Assassin's Creed. The second one was on my bed when I almost fell asleep but my mind was suddenly remembering something which kept me conscious even though my body was already paralyzed. I got out of it by trying so hard to move my mouth in order to bite my arm so my body can experience enough shock to actually wake up. And since I was about to enter REM sleep instead of already being in one, I had no hallucination.

So, getting a bit personal here, but since I managed to _cure_ my Night Terrors, I think it's my moral imperative to share. (YMMV) Backstory: As a kid, I had both the more common symptom of Sleep Paralysis, as well as the less common symptoms of _No_ paralysis, so I'd flail around during especially vivid dreams, injuring myself, as well as commonly sleep-walking. The Doctor wanted to medicate me, but I'm a Nerd to the core, so once we had a handle on exactly what was happening, physiologically, I started reading. My research lead me to the Occult section, perhaps unsurprisingly, and to books on Lucid Dreaming and Dream Walking. Being a through-and-through Skeptic, I didn't expect to find anything there, but after reading the instructions and keeping a Dream Journal for around a month, I found that it had become relatively easy for me to control my dreams. No Demons, Ghosts, Aliens or anything like that, but just simple practice at the _skill_ of Dreaming. The Control was cool, and definitely helped during the paralysis type, but more surprisingly, it helped with the flailing, too! So much so that I have been symptom free ever since! I think focusing on _learning_ to dream helped my brain to properly regulate the hormones. I hope this helps someone!

I don't doubt you. I have wonderful lucid dreams. Better than real life. But if you cannot control certain stressors in your life (major stress; like death, or recovering from a tbi) it's not as easy to keep things under control. Maybe that just goes without saying, though. Also if you sleep on your side with a pillow preventing you from flipping to your back, I personally find that helps. But I will certainly try the journal! 🙂

@@anovosedlik I agree that it's not going to be easy. My stressors were the death of my dad and the total upheaval of my life, at around 7 years old. I’ve had many encounters with sleep paralysis but interestingly enough I’ve never actually been scared nor seen a demon. My eyes have never been open for a single episode therefore I haven’t seen anything lol. But I wake up, I’m laying however I woke up, and I attempt to move like normal, and nothing happens. Once this happens I literally just say, “okay, I guess I’ll be here for a while.” And just wait lol. Sometimes I’ll fall asleep again and forget about it or sometimes I’ll try successfully to move again. It’s quite a strange phenomenon. For a while I’ve had sleep issues with inability to get a schedule, never having dreams, and having hypersomnia 100%of the time. I had always suspected narcolepsy but for the longest time it was, “no Liam you’re too young to be tired” “just wake up Liam” “maybe you should go to bed earlier and get off your videogames”, and it hurts how ignorant some people are. I finally convinced my parents to take me to get a multi sleep latency test (only due to other doctors strongly recommending it after the hypersomnia and chronic fatigue became so impeding that I couldn’t live my life). The sleep study came up as idiopathic hypersomnia. I was falling asleep way too fast during the nap tests after what they saw as a full proper nights rest and even fell asleep in between the naps, but they didn’t label it narcolepsy due to the fact that I never hit REM. Not once. It seems I skip REM a lot although during the night they said I hit it normally. My neurologist was puzzled by this especially due to the fact that I have, not one, but BOTH genes for narcolepsy which is extremely uncommon. And he diagnosed it as a narcoleptic disorder. My theory although even my doctors have no true way to tell is that my other diseases/disorders are impeding on the narcolepsy with conflicting issues resulting in so much stress on my body and systems within that I have incredible insomnia and hypersomnia all at the same time. I’m chronically fatigued and exhausted mentally and physically constantly but I can’t fall asleep too easily when I want to, but once I’m asleep, I’m out may as well be dead with how inattentive I am. Even as a baby I had major roof work done right over my head which would cause most babies to throw a tantrum to last a fortnight. I slept like a rock. The whole time. I go to school and come home and literally and figuratively collapse into sleep until 8 that night or just the next morning. It sucks. Maybe that’s why sleep paralysis doesn’t scare me. I’m glad to be in situations where I’m unable to do anything at all. It’s just relieving to say there’s nothing I can do about it. Whereas if I’m struggling through a sleep attack, I know I can do the task but I’m fighting myself to do it. Which helped form my likeness to nature and living off the grid eventually. If I get fatally wounded or infected. Oh well. Guess it’s over. Much better than the stress and fear of having people trying really hard to prevent it and having the uncertainty surrounding it. Just me? 🤷‍♂️ thanks for coming to my TED Talk

One of the interesting theories I've heard of how alien abduction night terrors/sleep paralysis started is that they are half remembered surgeries. While uncommon, accidental awareness does happen. The first famous one in America was Barney and Betty Hill in 1961, which is where the classic grey alien, beaming up with light, experimental probings, and similar tropes. The idea is that their story is fairly similar to accidental awareness if you think about it, you're paralyzed and numb, figures in white that may seem to have disproportionately sized heads are crowded around you and possibly messing with your insides, there is a bright light shining on you, and is obviously incredibly terrifying. If this were to happen and you only subconscious remember it or actively repress it, the similar experience of waking up while paralyzed could trigger those memories. Notably, Barney Hill had a colonoscopy a few years before his claimed abduction. Surgeries arent uncommon, so it is possible most people who claim to have been abducted have had a recent surgery or, as you said, the mass hysteria shapes their experience to fit it.

I had this happen to me several times while I was working overnights. It felt like I was being held down. Then a shadow figure would move in and out of my line of sight. Sometimes reaching out towards me. This would often happen two to three times at a time while trying to sleep when it would occur. Thankfully it would happen once every couple of weeks. It only actually stopped after I switched back to working the day shift. This was back in 2008ish. I did some basic research and found out about sleep paralysis. Had that through from Jr high to second year of college couple times a week to even multiple times per night... it sucked... In my case it seemed to be triggered by a combination of a couple factors. 1 I seem to hit REM almost as soon as I fall asleep (I have what feel like hour long dreams in the span of a 10 minute nap) And 2 I also seem to have some level of hyper alertness to sound. And I grew up in a noisy area, so I would be woken up by something at Least every 2 hours, often less than an hour apart.. It was in college that I started wearing ear plugs while I sleep, and that was finally enough for me to actually sleep through the night, and I haven't had sleep paralysis more than once or twice a year since

As a dude who experienced both, sleep paralysis and night terrors are two different things. Night terrors are when you are awake and able to move, however, you are still dreaming. The demon hallusinations are very real. Also, i have found a way to predict when sleep paralysis will happen. (Atleast to me). After i FULLY wake up in the morning, eat/drink something i might still feel a little tired, so i take a small nap. When i wake up from the nap, i have sleep paralysis. Its like that *every time.* therefore, i believe that i have found a noticable pattern when it comes to sleep paralysis.

I never looked into sleep paralysis, but I understood it. Then one night, I dreamt of seeing a shadow standing on the roof outside my window, next to my bed. He was wearing a trench coat, and a hat. In his left hand, he was holding a syringe. He slowly opened my window. I started trying to scream for help, but I couldn't get it out. He started reaching for my arm with the syringe. I then realized I wasn't moving my head like I felt like I was, then I realized I could feel my pillow on my face while trying to scream. I noticed I was still dreaming. I forced myself awake through my own screams. Most terrifying thing I ever experienced. I've never felt such an innate need to just scream HELP. I then passed it off as just a sleep paralysis episode from my sleep deprivation. It happened a 2nd time with banging on my door and walking in, but ended faster. I then just now looked up the description of the sleep paralysis demon, expecting some posts of people just talking about what they saw for funsies. Nope, what popped up was the Hat Man. An urban legend of a shadow man, in a coat, wearing a hat, and something people often see during sleep paralysis. Like a staggering amount of people. Also on the Wiki for it, under origin, is "Benadryl overdose". Not sure what that means, but he was holding a syringe for me, which makes it a little extra weird. It's just bizarre. I can't imagine what would have prompted me to see that specific thing twice, let alone years later find out it's an urban legend. Kinda horrifying, ngl. Only thing I can think of is that NOIR stuff often depicts a mysterious man in a trench coat and fedora in the shadows. Weird he had a syringe though. Brains are a wacky thing.

This happens to me a lot before I even have a chance to fall asleep, and most often when I'm trying to sleep. Learning about sleep paralysis helped me a lot, because I spent most of my life believing that ghosts and demons were out to get me. Since I lost my fear of it, I find it doesn't happen as often. However, my brain knows how to scare me one way or another, so if I try to close my eyes to avoid seeing the eyeless pumpkinhead looking thing in the corner of my room, it will start making noises of someone breaking into my house or children laughing, playing music, calling my name or talking in my ear. If I ignore the sounds, I start feeling hands touching my face or stroking my hair. If I can manage to ignore that, it starts squeezing my hands, feet and groin till it becomes painful, and if that isn't enough, it'll give me the feeling of being pulled off my bed and floating towards the window. Other times I've had it try to seduce me with a beautiful lady and then start shape shifting into a spiny monster. The most common things that happen so I know it's about to start is if I feel a cat brush its fur against my arm (because I don't have a cat) or if I look at an alarm clock with green numbers, I'll see the numbers turn red. Another is my perception of time slows down drastically and shadows turn into horned fingers with glowing eyes and start moving around, sometimes with a white cloud of smoke billowing into the room and green lazer lights behind it.

I suffer from a very strange form of partial sleep paralysis in which I am only locked up from the neck down. The oddities are thought to be due to some nerve damage that I sustained at a young age. The strangest part is that during my sleep studies (which were 3 to 4 days at a time) I was consistently able to pull myself out of the paralyzed state with conscious effort. My Neurologist says that my EEG looked incredibly strange when I forced myself out and requested that I submit to more tests. They never did figure out why I was able to force my way out but its a pretty neat way to showcase that we have barely even scratched the surface of neurology.

I suffered years, day in day out of sleep paralysis. I a true horror fan had then vivid demons sitting upon my chest and felt every touch of all kinds of demons teasing me with terror. The day I plunged myself into science and psychology to help me with past traumas, I relieved myself from the supernatural belief. Slowly my night terrors decreased in numbers and every experience became more of a horror movie which I could enjoy. Mind you before this relief I ended every night with screams and tears. Now I am free, because science.

I had a bad one induced by "Drugs" I say this with quotes because there were no contraband substances involved. I had consumed about 600mg of Caffeine (I unusually take note of these things because I'm a nerd for the pharmaceutical Industry) along with 15mg of mirtazapine (an anti-depressant with sedating effects which I had a prescription for at the time) and 2,000mg of acetaminophen (an over the counter pain-killer that like most pain-killers exhibits sedating effects). I tell you this as essentially I theorize that the mixing of a simulant alongside a sedative (especially in such high doses) would have caused such a negative outcome as without the use of sedatives there is no way I would have fallen asleep with the amount of caffeine I had consumed, however because I was able to fall asleep with the caffeine still present within my bloodstream it was most certainly the cause for such a terrible case of sleep induced psychosis.

Hello Kyle, love the show. One intresting thig about this paralysis is that if you understand what is happening, you can control what you dream. For instance, you can re-shape the demon, move them around, make them non-scary like in the Harry Potter world with the Boggart. Once you get the hang of it, you can control your breathing while in it, to let someone know you need to be woken up. At least this is one method I found useful.

I have had different sleep paralysis monster last year and this year This is what i name them: There is the yellow man he has no facial features has a knife ( not sure if this is sleep paralysis, i think its a nightmare) -happened only one time (I have been stabbed by him) White face jumpscare - often happens a lot and sometimes it happens while i can see my room and my sight become glitchy or bugy like an old tv screen Black face not realy jumpscare but he kinda moves arround my head and sometimes touches me - hapened only one time The mimic he only appeared one time he has a knife and trys to fool me with his voice.he can copy the voice of the person i know i havent seen him. ( I have been stabbed by him) The most recent sleep paralysis dream is the one with the nun she looks like the nun from the conjuring movie so i named her that she just stares from the ceiling then immediately jumpscares me. Only happened 1 time but I was so surprised/scared that i woke up. Lastly there is glitch I can barely see my sorrounding even if im asleep but my sight is glitchy and blurry like an old tv screen there isnt really someone like a person who jumpscare me when this happen sometimes though while having the glitchy sight i can also notice the sorrounding items/things moving only happened 1 time though.

@@ethanpine5669 It used to happen to me a lot more when I was a child. It always freaked me out. I distinctly remember the feeling of wanting to scream for help but being unable to and that scared me the most. Back then the internet and computers weren't as wide spread and google wasn't as prolific so I didn't really have a way to just look up what was happening. Eventually I just did what you did. Alright, chemical inhibitors that prevent us (mostly) from going berserk in our sleep. But I'm curious abut a thing: how does this work with being suddenly woken up? If you're in the middle of REM and, presumably, swimming in these inhibitors, and someone suddenly starts shaking you and making a concerted effort to wake you: wouldn't something like that also be experienced like sleep paralysis? Wouldn't the person wake up but be unable to move for at least a few seconds or something?

I experience sleep paralysis at least once a week, it's terrifying, but I've never seen these shadowy or disturbing figures people talk about. The way I experience it, I'm fully awake and conscious, not dreaming at all, and I'm fully aware that I'm awake and not able to move any part of my body. I realize I have two choices: fight fight fight, to move something -- eyelids are hard, but if I can get a finger to twitch, or push my tongue out a little bit, the rest usually snaps back; or, try to fall back asleep, which is hard, since I've just woke up and I'm rested, not tired. I feel myself begin to breathe rapidly, I've experimented on a few occassions having someone sleep in bed with me, and when I get the paralysis, hyperventilating to try to alert them to wake me up, but it must not be noticeable enough. Anyway, if this happens to be seen by others who experience sleep paralysis in the same way, please let me know, I'd love to hear from others on how they break out of it and what they experience (without the figures/terrors)

Can't say I've ever had sleep paralysis. But in my teens I had a recurring nightmare. Imagine a limbo like world were nothing exists except for a white background. However there was me and a large wrecking ball, but myself and the ball were just black silhouettes and in a hexagonal pixel form. I would imaging the wrecking ball swinging straight for me (it's anchor point was far above beyond what I could see). Because it was just a white background with pixelatted silhouettes, there was no depth perception and so I'd never know when the wrecking ball would hit me, but it was always fast. If I ever had that dream, I never got a peaceful night's sleep.

what you said in the end is completely true, once you realize what it is, it's not so scary, i'd even say it can be entertaining. The more you panic, the more your brain starts creating hallucinations. one time i had sleep paralysis and the hag visited me. very old wrinkly, black eyes, sharp teeth, long claws, the classic. She slowly crawled from the corner of my room till she was right next to my face and started licking my face. BOY i was soooo scared :)) After that when i found out what that was, a few weeks later i had sleep paralysis again, started to see a shadow person materializing in the corner, heard growling, and i said "shut up mate i wanna sleep, have to go to work tomorrow" closed my eyes, the growling stopped and i could fall asleep again

If you have paralysis connected with feeling that you cannot breathe (which I sometimes have and it is particulary nasty), possible reason is that you have eaten just before going to bed, and you slept on your back. In that position full stomach presses the lungs, and in half-sleep you can't overpower the pressure. Just don't eat later then something like two hours before sleeping, and it will go away. Tested on people, and it worked :-)

I also even dreaming been known to speak and even do small movements such as “picking up” a cup and “drinking” from it. Not full blown sleep walking but almost as if those chemicals aren’t as strong as they should be. This happened to me once as a kid, but I wasn’t paralyzed at all. I stat up in my bed and my room was just as I left it when I went to sleep. I still actually remember the layout of the bedroom and where I kept my toys. I looked out my bedroom window with a sense not that something was there, but as if I knew something was coming. Suddenly a bright orb of white light flew through my window across my room over my head and disappeared through the wall parallel to the window. Then in my peripheral vision I saw a shadow walk through the wall under my window. It walked around my bed and as soon as there was room a second one fallowed. Then a third one. They walked around my bed until there were seven of these…. Demon things surrounding me on all sides. I was a little Christian so I looked them all in the dark void of their face, and with the mighty squeak only prepubescent boy could muster, I shouted out “Get the hell out of my room in the name of Jesus.” They instantly vanished. I felt like nothing had happened and I looked around to make sure I wasn’t dreaming, I laid back down and went back to sleep. That was the first time I ever cussed. I can see why there might be a scientific explanation for this sort of thing, but what really bugs me about this naturalist prospective, even if it is totally true, is not just why on earth is our DNA coding us to have these sleep glitches, but why are we predisposed to interpret sleep glitches as if they were individually designed to reinforce our own spiritual delusions/religions? It’s like we evolved specifically to be religious creature. It’s one thing to consciously tell yourself a story and believe it, it’s another thing for the unconscious inner workings of the self to believe the stories we consciously tell ourselves. It’s another thing entirely for the unconscious self to tell the conscious self to believe it.

I’ve been having it every night for a while now. Evil demons aren’t the only things you can see in it. I’ve seen everything from past pets and my own wife when she wasn’t even home, to weird aliens. The less freaked out you get the more random they get. Once I even felt like I floated out of my body to the ceiling and was promptly sucked back in when I looked down on it and freaked out. That was also a kind of hallucination. In my experience the vast majority of the time it doesn’t come with any hallucinations at all, you just can’t move.
