Some beneficial bugs will die from the insecticides, check the recommended time to wait after spraying before releasing them(it’s usually at least a few weeks). Also, the way captain jacks works is it stays on the plant long term, the thrips eat it and then their stomachs explode and they die(gross I know lol) so it’s best to first spray the plant with water, let it dry a bit, then spray the captain jacks and leave it on there.

I have thrips regularly and used Captain jacks spray over the years. I found out this year that the systemic powder works even better for me. The roots absorb the systemic powder through watering and when the thrips eat the plant, they die. They hop to another plant and the same thing happens rip. I haven’t seen any thrips for MONTHS. It’s amazing. Good luck Becca!

I tend to do a plant purge every summer or downsize plants i no longer love. Or too much work on them. Or don’t thrive in my home. I also sell cuttings on plants that are overgrown and in there place. Haven’t a newborn is definitely hard after the 1st year it gets easier. I do alot of plant preventative every month. And each watering i clean the leaves too. I don’t own any tropical plants and android’s etc i think spidermites and thrips are attracted to those types. With Hoyas is the mealybugs and spider mites.

1) GREEN Lacewing Larve will take care of your pest problems, they are very aggressive! I work in a big greenhouse and they work on mealy too! Worth every penny! 2) Vessis suck! Honestly??? It is HELLA impressive that in all the time you've owned houseplants you've never had thrips. But like you said, it's just a part of owning houseplants, I get a coctail of thrips and spider mites mutiple times a year every year lol so you're doing great. Just an fyi, the beneficials I get are also susceptible to insecticides so there needs to be a 2-week period between the last treatment and when I introduce them to my collection. I'd double check if the beneficials you're planning to get have that rule too, would be a shame if you ordered them and then realized you couldn't use them. Hope it all goes well

You know. Heheh, when you said “you should be proud if you find a pest”-My twisted brain thought “Yeah, ‘cause that means your plants are healthy and therefore tasty to pest.”😅 I’m so glad you’re getting a handle on this! Pests are stressful. Godspeed.

I live in Tucson, Arizona and spidermites are unavoidable with my outdoor plants. Spidermites love hot, dry wreathed which is exactly what we have. So far I've only had one outbreak of spidermites with my houseplants and Captain Jack's dead bug brew alternating with spraying isopropyl alcohol cleared them out without any issues. I recently lost all of my African violets to cyclamen mites. I bought avid to try and save the two African violet plants that I was watching for my mom for the month she was gone. I don't know if they can be saved, I may end up buying her some replacements.

I have thrips on my ric rac because I had it hanging outside on the porch for summer. I found some Arber insecticide on summer clearance at Walmart. It can be used as a spray and when watering. I watered my whole collection with it as a precaution. Then I doused the ric rac a couple of days after watering. So far so good.

Thrips and spider mites love to kick me when I’m down.. aka they come for my plants when I’m not watering or fertilizing consistently because I’m either busy or my mental health is affecting me. I use systemics but have used beneficials in the past too. Beneficials are great but so expensive!

I feel for you in this being the worst possible time for you to take on this kinda pest problem with all the work involved. Captain Jacks is my favorite product. One a month I wash everyones leaves and treat my plants with Jacks and leace it on without spraying it off as my year long preventative and it has worked great for my living situation. Everyones location or state puts them at risk for all types of critters lol. Sending you strength to say this too shall pass. :)

Has the he thrips chomped on your newer leaves? They also chomped on my Hoya heart leaf and it ended up getting a bacterial and researched it and plants with bacteria cannot recover when all leaves infected. It had just taken off too and a ton of baby leaves now all infected
@Kira-kg4kl Жыл бұрын

@@Kira-kg4kl if you ever get a Hoya that their sap is coming out on the leaves all over as tiny dots it is some pest biting and treat it immediately with Neem so the pest doesn’t give it a fungus or bacteria. I’ve lost 3 Hoyas at the same time from whatever pest this was. Funny thing is since i water spray all my plants every watering I have never seen any pests
@Kira-kg4kl Жыл бұрын
@Horsewoman-pt2ku I don't find that neem works as a treatment to be honest, I have 200+ plants currently and I usually use beneficial bugs or if an infestation is really bad ill go in with systemics on specific plants that are suffering the worst Neem is more of a preventative in my eyes I'm glad your not really suffering with them anymore, washing and cleaning plants can really help 💜

@Kira-kg4kl Жыл бұрын
So the adults and larvae are on the leaves, the eggs are inside the leaves and the pupae are in the soil So the larvae drop down into the soil to turn into adults
@nekia2much Жыл бұрын
@@Kira-kg4kl oh nooo. Would it be easier to just repot them?
@Kira-kg4kl Жыл бұрын
@nekia2much I usually repot and clean the roots and then bake the soil in the oven because I'm poor lol and can't afford to bin soil so I just make sure everything is dead You could always do a hydrogen peroxide wrinse through the soil, just make sure you have a look online to check how strong it needs to be as you don't wanna kill the roots

@@Kira-kg4kl thank you so much. I will try the baking process I don’t want to harm the roots. I’ve never baked soil before. I will do some research.
