It took me a full year to battle my great thrip invasion. Stay vigilant and don't give up! They will return. Cut any leaves off with ANY damage and you'll be good!! That's the absolute best way to go!! You're doing great!

I’ve also been dealing with thrips for the first time it is a struggle indeed. I tried green lacewing larvae and it didn’t seem to do very much. I have been spraying with insecticidal soap consisting of rubbing alcohol dawn dishsoao and warm water. I haven’t seen many since I’ve sprayed them last but I plan on spraying them all again soon 😢

I appreciate the normalization of crying over your houseplants! This last saturday my monstera albo got knocked over by a rescue cat and the newest leaf was ripped 😥 many tears were shed! And that is okay! We just want to do right by our plants :) I hope your plants continue to get better and heal. You're doing great!

I got thrips on a couple of plants last year and cleaned, treated and isolated them asap and never had them spread to the rest of my collection. I also bought a syngonium that, I could see at the store, had thrips...bought it, treated it while keeping it isolated and haven't had troubles since. They're really not the death sentence that so many make them out to be. However, this spring when taking plants outside, I realized that I had scale on my three semi-large schefflera (my husband got them for free from work and brought them home to me)...it all made sense why they had been struggling. I attempted to treat them while outside and didn't see them anymore...until a few days ago (brought them in around a month ago). I haven't seen scale on any other plant at any other time but these seem to be a scale magnet and getting rid of scale is so tedious! They latch on and blend in so well unless you're really looking closely for them...and they can hide in nooks and crannies and the bases of the petioles...ugh. Scale would have to be my nightmare pest!

Loved the dogs & the cute baby noises! I love captains Jack dead bug brew! I usually power wash the plants with water and then use that for spider mites (when I get them, very rarely). If you’re still concerned, add systemic to your plants. In my experience, it gives me a huge peace of mind (I’m aware of the controversies behind it but I consider myself a responsible adult who knows how to follow instructions. I’ve been using it all the time and it just gives you a peace of mind, that in my opinion, nothing else could give me. So, if I find anything, I power wash the plants and spray maybe once and then I apply systemic, problem solved. For some reason, the water really helps in my case so I rarely Repeat any treatments. I do make it a point to wash the plants of my Leaves at least once a month, specially the thin leave ones (e.g. Tortum or non velvety alocasias). Besides water, systemic is my superhero ;-) Keep pushing through, you’re great plant parent! Xoxo

I agree, I love Capt. Jack's Dead Bug Brew and Bonide Systemic Granules. I know it's controversial also, but I don't care, they work. Never dealt with pests and like you said, huge peace of mind you/I don't have to. I don't have a big collection of plants, only what I can comfortably take care of enjoy.

Glad to hear you have it under control! In Europe there is a ban on the only substance that really works starting tomorrow (which is good because it's honestly not that good for the environment) so I really don't know how to deal with another infestation in the future.

I'm not sure if this would prove helpful for you, but it was definitely helpful for me! When I had thrips, I did my usual pest routine of adding water, a few tablespoons of olive oil and a couple drops of blue dawn dish soap to a bottle, shaking it up, and thoroughly spraying down the plants a few days in a row. And then spraying again for another round of a few days if I noticed any additional pest activity later. I've done this for both thrips and spider mites now

I hope you are out of the woods! I tried treating with captain jacks and tried lady bugs twice but I kept finding damage for almost a year. That was when everyone was starting to use sulfur for flat mites so I decided to treat every single plant in my collection for 8 weeks with sulfur and I haven’t seen damage or a thrip in a year now! Plus, I think it just overall helped and got rid of anything I may have been missing too. I think I remover you’ve used sulfur for mites before so just wanted to mention that worked well for me! Good luck!!!

A problem that i found with thrips, is they hide in the new leaf. I decide to unroll a monstera leaf and a ficus leaf and i found them again. So make sure to take a close look on the new leaf. I thought i was done with them since i add some beneficial insects ( swirskii, chryopse and stratiolaelapse scimitus ) i guess ill make an other introduction just to make sure. Hope you are really done with them !!! ❤

The other wouldn’t care at all. Our kids are individuals and they deserve a say. I’ve been on this thrips journey with you! I thought that I could use captain jacks on everything, and then manage it with beneficial mites afterwards…I thought I got rid of them completely, but I recently found a bunch on some of my prized baby anthuriums 😢 then i started looking in other areas and ya, they were coming back for sure. So I’m just gonna forget the beneficials and keep treating once a week with captain jacks until i don’t see anymore i suppose, Then I will bring in the beneficials, probably forever because thrips suck!!!

Thrips have back on my plants after having them gone for about 3 months! I have only seen larve on the leaves, never adult ones so i dont know how they come back and spread to other plants🤔

Yesss the first time I got thrips I was convinced everything was going to die because of what the internet said. I've maybe lost 2-3 plants from thrips and I've had them a few times now. They're not hard to manage in my experience 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi Becca! You mentioned that 'the second you slipped up with systemic pesticide, that's when the thrips attacked.' Can I ask how often you recommend treating plants with systemic pesticide, and which one you use?

Most systemics need multiple applications to begin working, so what I normally use is SNS209 and I believe it takes 6-7 applications to begin working. I’d suggest using a systemic every time you water, or have the systemic granules in your soil so it’s released at every watering. Also will say it’s important to rotate which systemic you use (like every few months probably) because bugs can build up resistance.

Adult thrips are black with long skinny bodies. Juvenile thrips are white with long skinny bodies. You can see both with naked eye
