Girl. I feel the exhaustion. I fought against thrips on my Monstera Deliciosa for 3 weeks, every morning, every night, and the #@&£ing thing died anyway. 🙃 It's tiring, and sometimes it isn't worth it because the plant isn't healthy and can't recover. You've done the best you can do and that's all you can do 💜

I had my first bugs a few months ago, mealy bugs. My stomach was in knots until I got rid of them all. It took patience and MULTIPLE applications of insecticidal soap and neem oil. I used Ashley’s recipe on one plant that I caught spider mites super early and it worked like a charm! Hope all your plants are on the mend and you’re feeling better!💕

But I was so heartbroken and stressed when I found them, I think I cried a few times too lol. Thank you form this video, makes me feel better that I wasn't the only one who was so sad and disheartened about getting them. I didn't think about wiping down my surfaces so thank you for that, I will be doing that today!!! I hope all your beautiful babies have recovered!

The best thing you can do is have some rule for your plants. When you get a new plant, always, always quarantine it for at least a week and check it daily for pests, including the plastic pot the plant sits in! When you repot the plant, throw the used plastic pot in the trash, buy new ones instead. Don't reuse old soil either, no matter how short amount of time the plant has sit in it, always throw used soil in the trash. Never let your plants touch each other, in any way, and try to keep them at least 10 cm apart (from leaf tip to leaf tip), this includes when you water your plants, don't put 10 plants in a small sink. If you clean your leaves with a cloth, clean the cloth thoroughly under water after using it on each plant. Make it a habit to check your plants for pests once a week, and if that seems like a lot of work, remember it's better to have a few healthy plants, than a lot of miserable plants. Give a plant away as a present before you buy a new one.

I had a couple of money trees (Pachiras) that were completely covered in webs one day. Once of the plants lost all of its leaves the next day. I used a microfiber duster to remove the webs. I experimented by mixing Murphy's Oil Soap, water, cayenne pepper and a few drops of peppermint oil. It made the leaves shiny on the good plant. Just when I got fed up, and was ready to toss out the naked plant a week later, I noticed it had a bunch of new branches coming in. It bounced back like new a few weeks later, and within a year, both plants were taller than me. I'm 5'6" tall. The plants were 3 feet tall when I bought them.

Favorite part of the video: when you gave your plant the finger. Lol. I can only imagine the work you have put into eradicating the little demons. Hi there! Just a suggestion I wish someone had told me when I had spidermites, as it would have saved me a lot of time and heartbreak: Get a good miticide. I got Floramite SC on ebay. Its sold by the ounce and needs dilution so it will last you for years so don't freak out at the price. 😉 Spray every surface of the plant with the solution. NO scrubbing or reapplication needed. It knocked my spidermites OUT!! I hope this helps someone 💕

You need to get the bonide captain jacks deadbug brew. My fiddle leaf fig had months of spider mites. I thought they had died in the winter with me lightly spraying one section of it and wiping it down , low and behold we are now in the spring and the spider mites have migrated and reproduced all the way to the top of the plant. I only noticed becauSe it would sometimes grow a new leaf and it would not grow past like 1/3 of the standard leaf size, and it had a lot of the brown dots that sometimes fiddles get. I say this to say, if you aren’t aggressive with pesticides you won’t get rid of these. I have done a full dripping wet application of dead bug brew and then a second a week after. I can’t see any more , now That i actually know what they look like I will closely inspect and then do another application in 2 weeks and neem oil in the rotation

Yikes! Plant pests are an absolute nightmare! I've tried everything, including Neem Oil to no avail on a Majesty Palm that was infested with Mealy Bugs. No change. Unfortunately, over time, the plant died. I have learned to adopt a new regimen beginning with a new plant purchase. Before purchasing the plant, I inspect it. If I'm able to lift it out the pot, do that too. Once I get the plant home, I inspect it further and spray the body of soil with 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with water. After placing it back in the pot, I spray the leaves and top soil. I then water if it needs watering. Whenever, I repot a plant, I spray the new soil with the same peroxide mix. Also, when the Spring season hits, as a proactive measure, I tend to do the same for some of my plants that I know are prone to pests that may wake up during the Spring season. This has worked for me like a charm for the past two years. If all else fails, remove the plant from the pot, rid the soil as much as you can, hose/rinse the plant down, and repot in a new pot with constant care. To sanitize the old pot, wash it with very hot water and dish liquid. I've also read that cut garlic cloves stuffed in the soil will get rid of pests. Not sure how truthful because I havent tried it yet.

I think that damage is from them! They will also sometimes leave like small brown spots on a leaf. I think as far as next steps go, make the alcohol and dish soap mixture (or whatever other mixture you like! I have a video about pest management and give a lot of spider mites tips kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIukiqWNabaHeMU) and scrub the leaves gently with a brush! Do that for 3 days, let it rest for 5, then do 3 more days.

OMG spider mites are the worst! They seem to come back seasonally too in any place that is dry with delicate plants after you've had them once. The best tips I can offer is #2: put your susceptible plants in humid places because spider mites do hate the humidity. But #1: integrated pest management as preventative care. If you have as many plants as Becca or myself it may be worthwhile to order some beneficial insects such as green lacewing larvae or eggs. I get them every few weeks from arbico organics in the form of little cards with strips of eggs on them and a hang those on sensitive plants and the little guys come out and eat the aphids and spider mites and all kinds of stuff like that and I rarely even see them. They look like little monsters and then they turn into these beautiful little flies but the flies have been the most rare things. I kind of wish I could see them more because they are really beautiful.

Spray the infected plants with rubbing alcohol will kill mealy bugs. You may have to spray again every few days to get all the emerging babies (sometimes takes 2 weeks). After spraying, Keep out of light until the leaves dries so they don't burn. Always check plants thereafter, to keep the numbers down.

So happy I came across this video. Thank you for sharing! I currently have 26 plants infested with spider mites! I've been going through the cleaning process for about a week now and I am absolutely exhausted! I also brought about eight plants over to my boyfriend's house and they are all infested as well! I feel like such a terrible plant mama because I knew something was going on with them because they weren't thriving like they normally do and I just feel terrible that I couldn't figure out this issue sooner. Due to my living arrangements all my plants are in one room, all touching and this is why it spread to every single one! they are definitely doing better but I still see the spider mites in the soil and I've been doing a treatment of 1 L of water, half a teaspoon of mild dish soap and one and a half teaspoons of neem oil. I mix everything together and put it in a spray bottle and drench all of my plants including the soil. I also washed all of my plants down when I first found the spider mites and cleaned every single leaf and now every morning and night I spray this mixture on all the leaves and in the soil. This experience has definitely been an eye opener and I will be arranging all of my plants differently and spreading them out throughout the house instead of having them all in one room together!

I feel your pain ! I have over 200 succulents. They’re tricky to treat cuz they have the white powdery farina on them . I looked under a microscope and saw the scum bags . Sprayed 91 percent alcohol straight on them and watched them die . Unfortunately, this removes the protective farina from my succulents. But diluted alcohol didn’t work. They kept crawling in the diluted alcohol. But I’ve been spraying with straight alcohol, then taking the hose to them . I think stronger alcohol MIGHT loosen the eggs and webs so they can be washed off . Cuz I don’t see many eggs on the plants after I do that . I’m thinking insecticidal soap and then rinsing with a strong stream of water might loosen the eggs too . When left on my succulents, the soap makes them burn under the grow light . How has your battle ended ? Are the spider mites gone ? I hope so . They’re the devil . And you feel like things are crawling on you . Yuck 🤢. Check your trees and plants outside. I just noticed that all the trees near my house are super infested with mites. The same ones on my indoor succulents. This is where they came from . Unfortunately, the trees are too tall to effectively spray . Such a bummer !

Dear Becca, the way that I found out my monstera deliciosa had spider mites was when I misted it with a spray bottle. The fine mist obviously got caught in the webbing and that’s why it was more easy to see. That’s the reason why I mist my plants now and then, besides having a humidifier. Thankfully it was just a small infestation and I got rid of it really quickly washing it down, using neem oil and later releasing predator mites on this plant. At least for now I did not see any infestation anymore but I will always stay alert on pests. Thanks for all the information you share with us. Big hug from Germany 🇩🇪.

I have had full-on intense and sustained anxiety since realizing that spider mites had infested all the plants in my bedroom a couple days ago. My bedroom is super humid so I thought that would help, and I spray down my plants pretty often (previously with neem but more frequently with just diluted Dr. Bronner's or just water), and I'm not sure what happened or where they spider mites came from, but every plant in the room had them. I freaked out -- especially when I realized they were all over the dresser/walls/surrounding areas. I thought about rinsing them down and treating them, and I started to do that with about half of them, but then I decided to cut my losses and toss all 11 of them. I didn't have another place to put them and knew that if I put them back in the room they'd just get more infested. I'm still finding the mites on the surfaces where the plants previously were and keep spraying with diluted rubbing alcohol (so much that I feel you on the getting high on it thing). The weirdest thing is, all of the plants were doing incredibly well! Like nothing was wrong with them, they'd grown since I purchased them and were all putting out new growth at a constant rate. None of the leaves were dropping or yellowing so nothing indicated that they had any sort of pest. I just started seeing this white residue on the tops of the leaves (nothing even on the bottoms) and teeny tiny little white bugs. I deep cleaned the room but have truly been living in this perpetual anxious state that they'll somehow spread to other rooms and areas of my house. I almost wonder if they were spider mites at all? Like I said, none of the plants declined and there was barely any webbing on the plants. They were all putting out new growth. Could it have been some other innocuous insect or different mite variety? There's so little information about what kind of insects we shouldn't worry about (and so much about what we should worry about) when we find them on our plants. Thank you for making this video though. I've felt so down in the dumps about the situation (not that I thought I was immune to pests or anything) since I invested so much in nursing these very picky plants to health and then to the point of thriving that I'm just gutted. RIP monstera adansonii, philodendron micans, variegated maranta, lemon lime maranta, jungle velvet, purple oxalis, ctenanthe lubbersania, triostar stromanthe, rex begonia, angel wing begonia medora, and calathea makoyana. If anyone can recommend a treatment that's super effective but also safe for a living/sleeping space, I would be incredibly grateful. Could this have just been a soil mite situation? Like, I said, there's not much info about the insects/arachnids that we can find on our plants that may not actually be harmful.

It probably was powdery mildew or mealybug, however I've not heard of them caring for anything but plants. Usually killed by pro chemical pesticides

insecticidal soap doesn't work on them because they're not insects (they have 8 legs like spiders, not 6). Sprays against mites are called Acaricides. Just spray your plants with that 3 times, with a week in between each and it will kill them all. The selfmade mixture you use won't hurt them, but it gets off the webbing, much like soap gets fat off of dishes. But the Acaricide will kill them if they get in contact with the mist, but only the adults, that's why you should do it 3 times to kill every generation of the spider mites - like you mentioned.

Hi Becca! SORRY! It is not fun dealing with pest on your plants and Leo. Webbing on your plants does not mean you only have spider mites. I was at my friend's plant shop. I saw a Ric Rac Cactus. It had webbing on it. She showed me it was a spider and they are good, since they kill plant pests. I also have a large magnifying glass with a built in light. It helps to see pests on the bottom of the leaves and/or in the soil. I always use Neem oil, peppermint soap spray to prevent and take care of pests. Good luck and keep fighting the good fight! Gerry 😎

Ugh - spider mites are so stressful. This video caused me anxiety thinking about my spider mite problem - I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I, too, did not realize what the problem was with my plant, as I had never had spider mites before. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the new plant my mom bought me for Christmas brought home the spider mites. NOT FUN. I had to clean and change out the soil on 5 other large plants. This is a good, resourceful, video for those who have never experienced the nasty little creatures.

I keep all my plants on "islands" so they dont spread to other plants. I never touch the plants either n touch the others, thats just spreading anything that may be on there. I then spent a month spraying n washing the F out of the plant with soap and neem every week , I think im at week four and still no webs again

Californicus work the best in my opinion but you will have to stop any pesticides. I usually start with iso+dish soap spray and rotate with organic insecticide/neem every 3 days (they seem to grow tolerant) until the Californicus arrive in the mail.

I had a minor outbreak of thrips over the past few weeks. The one GOOD thing due to covid-19, I was off from work & had the time to deal with the pests. It was awful. I too felt so disappointed in myself. It’s an emotional thing when you feel you’ve let your plants down.

You can find cheap makeup brushes at the dollar store sometimes. That's where I bought mine to treat with. I also learned to spray treat all my plants prophylactically during the growing season. Switch up the products used to prevent the bugs from building resistance.

dude since you posted this i checked out my own plants and i too found webbing so i'm gonna follow what you did! i don't know how many plants you'd need to have in your collection but nick pileggi mentioned that he uses integrated pest management like green lacewings because his collection is so huge and scrubbing fifty plants in the shower every day for three days is like a huge stressful task that no one wants to do. i'm definitely going to use your method right now because i don't have that many plants and green lacewings are pretty expensive so i can't afford it for this level of problem which is comparatively small but as i get more plants i'm definitely going to keep that in mind

I had spider mites. It was freaking awful. They spread like a wildfire 🤦‍♀️ I used a mix of water, rubbing alcohol & dish soap and put each & everyone of my poor plants into the tub. I rinsed them out violently 🙈 I reapplied again in a couple days. They were gone, thank goodness! Now I routinely apply a neem oil/water mix to mist them every. Single. Week. Religiously. They are free from spidermite misery and so am I 🙌🙏

I get them even if I spray those plants coming in. It is exhausting lol. I am basically wiping my orchids leaves with an insecticide and antifungal weekly and will stop the weekly when I feel I murder all those annoying spidermites.

neem spray 2 times per week for 2 weeks, then you can go to once a month preventative. neem is the lowest effort and is effective. keeping them away forever is not realistic. neem is the best one. no fumes either. 1 teaspoon oil 3/4 teaspoon soap 1 liter water.

isopropyl alcohol metabolizes into acetone in the body, and is not good for plants either. its an added stressor in addition to the spider mite damage, whereas neem doesnt stress plants that dont need their farina. its better to use the alcohol only on the plants with farina like graptos and sedums.

I use ‘grow safe’ on my plants with spider mites because I have edible plants as well that I need to treat. It’s an Omri listed organic treatment for spider mites, aphids, powdery White mildew. It works super good! I use two treatments(7 days apart) & so far so good. It’s newer on market but I think it works outstandingly well! I highly recommend. It doesn’t work on all pests but those I listed I know for sure. Great video! I also used to think I was untouchable with pests...then Boom! My plants got so infected out of no where. I didn’t know until I started searching online for problems with a certain plant & someone had written spider mites! Flash light from phone works best for me too! Thanks for this video. I’m sure it’s saved someone’s plant or collection of plants out there:)
