I also have Marimo moss balls. They are boring and more like decor for me. I have them in a small glass globe with pretty colored rocks setting on a shelf and I just find them adorable and apart of my decor. If I ever get rid of them, I will definitely do so responsibly 🥲

R. tetrasperma is one of my favorites. In my collection I have 2 and I think they are so charming. I bought my original plant in 2019 from a local nursery for $15. I live in a high desert environment but it doesn't seem to mind the low humidity (unlike my Hoya Matilde) It is hit or miss when I try to propagate it but interestingly they are usually in stock at home depot/lowes in my area every year.

Am I the only one who remembers Dioone edule having a moment? I don’t remember exactly when, but probably 5-ish years ago. I looked them up recently because I remembered there being a little fuss around them-many people were sharing their newly germinated seeds with one or two leaves, and everyone calling them “Jurassic plant”-but it was like that little moment never happened. I will also say that R. tetrasperma does occasionally appear around here. We’re a little behind the times in terms of what’s available in shops, so people locally are still into it, or sometimes just newly into it. I had decided long ago not to get one because I didn’t want to devote space to one when I preferred most Monsteras, as well a R. decursiva. But then a friend gave me a tetrasperma, and it has won me over. It’s so effortlessly robust and happy!

My friendship plant is the easiest big mama ever. I moved her into a 2 gallon pot and she loves it! She put out 11 pups this year. She lives in the northeast-facing bay window in my kitchen and I rotate her a quarter turn every time I water to keep her growing upright.

I had several moss balls in my aquarium. It seems to give a Japanese vibe when used as a houseplant. I enjoyed watching my snails, shrimp, and fish interact with them.

Loved this walk down memory lane. I’ve also been collecting since 2018 and completely forgot about the TC tetrasperma debacle. You could do a series with this! Birkin, Thai Con, ROF, and Florida Beauty all had a fall from grace!

This was a super interesting topic! I started collecting houseplants in 2021 and admittedly never owned any of the plants on this list. I do hear about the variegated R. tetrasperma now. Not sure how OG they are but ponytail palms, P. birkin and Syngoniums would go on my list.

You are on point with all that you mentioned. I was one of those that was desperate to buy a Pilea when they were going for insane prices, but waited until the craze slowed down and I still have it,still love it,it is so easy to look after,it should be called a "friendship plant"😅 as I’ve given so many pups away.still have my original tetrasperma as well, love it like crazy,I don’t really see them around anymore as well, even in Australia. Never got into the moss ball, but my planty son did,but he had to wait for his birthday as it wasn’t cheap, have to ask him if he still has it! We collected some duck weed at a local pond, put it into our pond and before we knew it,it was overtaken by water snails or could even have those pesky things that you showed. I’m always responsible about disposal of any plant matter in the wild. I’ve seen enough devastation to the wildlife on ppl disposing of plants that overtake the natural environment. I think the reason why they stop selling the trendy plants from couple of years ago is there’s always new ones coming out. I don’t follow trends anymore,I can wait a few years for the prices to drop 😅 Good topic Becca. 💚🪴🌿

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma is one of my favorites. I have one and it is the most tolerant plant ever. I also still have an older peperomioides. I find them tempermental. Some years it does well, other years not so much.

I got my raph tetra earlier this year. I had been wanting one since I started collecting in 2020, but just never saw the right one at the right time. This girl was enormous, super full and lush and already on a pole. I recently chopped her and I have around 30 cuttings currently rooting in a sphag and perlite mixture. I also have a peperomia, but I really love her sister, the raindrop peperomia. Super thick glossy green leaves that come to a point at the bottom.

I still have my raphidaphora tetrasperma, its come back many a time from just nodes in a prop box after events such as sunburn, raccoons toppling it over, and root rot. At present I have a bushy full container, soon to be ready to take props :D

Oh gosh good video with some interesting messages. I had a Pilea peperomioides and it died and that was so sad it was one that was in a sale rack and I thought that I could get it to survive so I am going to try and get one that isn't on sale just really good looking and healthy, I loved that plant and was so sad when it died because I was trying my best to take good care of it. I have never had a tetrasperma but wouldn't mind getting one. Well I wish you a great rest of your week, sending love and hugs, bye!! 😊🥰😍💕💜💜💜💜💜

They still sell tetraspermas in the Netherlands. Such a unique beautiful plant. Fell in love with it (thanks to mama botanica) at the start of my plant hobby, bought one, but unfortunately killed it. Never bought one again. But I see bug lush plants at the shops with relatively large leaves. Love it!

I've had two R.T. One I bought from Steve's Leaves back in day when it was hitting the market, because of the growth pattern I believe this was a tc specimen. It was difficult to grow for me and I eventually tossed it. Later I got a plant from a local person that I believe to not be tc and still have that one today, grows way better than the first one(maybe related to first one being tc or maybe just wasn't a strong tc specimen🤷♀️)

I love tetrasperma a lot, it's my favourite right now. I got my first one in 2020 and grew beautifully, it died when I got sick in 2022 and didn't take care of my plants for a while. I was devastated and I looked for another one for a while and it was hard to find. I ended up getting a one-leaf cutting from someone else and it's now bigger than the first one ever was. It's gorgeous and growing in all directions. I was looking for a second one for a while and just got it this summer, but it was so easy to find in 2020 that it was shocking that it was so hard now.

I think the rhaphid t. (baby ginny) went out because they are climbers. Climbing plants become very hard to handle very fast if you're not familiar with poles and trellises. I had one for awhile but never could get around to giving her something to climb and she just looked straggly. I hate the idea of moss poles and stuff, although i'll have an odd small trellis for a hoya because they are not a huge deal.

I have a Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, but I did noy buy it, I got it as a gift through my Buy Nothing group. I like it OK. It's on a moss pole and makes a nice filler in a corner where I need something thin and tall. I would probably not mind swapping or gifting it. I also have a Pilea peperomioides, also a gift, and I like it a little better, perhaps because of its unusual look and the generosity with which it makes babies. I much prefer it when it's a young plant. Once it matures and starts getting gangly, I like it less. The Marimo I have never seen being sold anywhere, and after your explanation of the invasive species of mussels, I'm glad it never entered my radar.

I have a theory about the pilea peperomioides. I think it was never hard to get here in Europe. Maybe they were mostly grown here, and it was hard to ship them to America, and maybe it took a while before propagating the plant over there caught up with the demand on your side of the sea! Just a theory, I don't know the 🌟facts🌟.

i dont see Rhaphidophora tetrasperma like ever anymore🤔 I still have mine, but yeah I think people are probably over it because there are so many new fancy fenestrated leaves from new monstera cultivars.
