Great to watch the vids, Yeah, for sure sometimes the valves can hit the covers, Not sure what cam and all it is. Actually, I had the stock cam with the 1.25 ratio rockers and mine valve cover had to be centered just so-so or I could feel it hit the valves. Actually, valve cover position may be a matter of feeling it with the engine running, But this little spider probably needs bolt-on aftermarket valve covers. Oh and yeah, probably the big end of the tube needs to be out. You can't have any hitting going on, well you can but then they start leaking oil and at least my aluminum pushrods wore down to a point they had to be changed. Now I use the CB Performance SS Wide Mouth Racing Push Rod Tubes. www.cbperformance.com/product-p/1567.htm

The carburator sounds the way it should be, no dark and filthy smelling combustion. The design is classically brute and fashionable for many generations. It has that curve and light feeling when one stares at it. Its good to have plenty of owners that does not get tired nor worn out on a breezy humid day and has a lot of instincts of the details and parts. Keep going in maintaining the details of a superb brand as bright and clever as many owners. Preserved Thy words are life. KJV 1611. Planted by the waters by the word.

Also good catch on the pushrod contacting its tube! The 912 I bought sight unseen ran out of oil because a pushrod was bent and wore through the tube on my first long drive - ended up pulling over into a grass-covered ditch. Now the car is making good memories. Thanks for another great video, hope things are going well!

Great series! I remember working on cars when all you needed was a Chilton's manual, two screw drivers, and three wrenches max. And the test drive wasn't overkill. To me that is the difference between knowing and thinking you fixed the problem, worked on a few car that were " fixed." Thanks.

This weekend I was at Blenheim Palace where there was over 1500 classics and supercars, in fact due to the Bentley centenary there was over 1000 Bentleys from the very first onwards. But a little blue car really caught my eye, it was a Spyders INC 718 RSK Spyder, I had a chat with the owner of the company and the little sky blue car really captivated me. It only had a Beetle engine but apparently not any smaller than period

Wow, great troubleshooting. When I first got the car there was a fuel delivery problem. Previous owners had installed two pint size fuel filters in the engine bay. Effectively, they acted like a second gas tank. The fuel would dribble into the filters and they would take up any extra fuel needs to carbs. Replacing the plastic fuel line certainly makes the car safer. Now, onto the comparison episodes!

What time of year was that? I remember several years ago, when I visited the area and went up in a glider out of Boulder over those hills .. I think we flew down south of Golden, then up over the divide. Wasn't windy that day though. But I do know that they will soar in the mountain wave in the winter where those lenticulars are formed. Need to get back there someday.

What a beautiful day for a test drive, I lived in Parker Co from 2015 to 2016 and I miss the breath taking vista of those rolling plains at that elevation, just incredible! I was concerned about that engine ticking a couple episodes ago and thought that something wasn't right considering that you had done a valve train rehab and adjustment. I thought it was maybe a sticky valve stem guide or worn rocker arm pivot, I never thought that a push rod could do that, it seems that there is a little more to the "story" of the ticky/leaky push rod tube to be told! I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and spending time getting to know you Franny, I hope more are coming.

Dear Frannie and Heidi, Consider measuring the OD of stock VW pushrod,compare with present chrome moly OD.....if stock VW pushrod has smaller OD-swap out....I can't remember-(i ran stock and chrome moly pushrods in different engine configurations-but 40 + years ago!!.....Stock VW pushrods held up very well up to approx 5000 + rpm (even with mild hi-lift cam-)-for normal street spurts and SCCA road racing events......i hope those expandable pushrod tubes work out!!!...one of your commenters on this VLOG #9 is/was right!!-it is best to stay with the stock VW pushrod tubes.....thank you both for all of your efforts and VLOG's!!!!! Thanks John. My guess is that the steel rods are actually smaller in diameter, but I don't have access to the new rods. I did talk to the owner about swapping them out, but he chose to stay with what he has. I think those pushrod tubes seem to work just fine, but I bet the originals would allow for more clearance. Thanks for the thoughts! F
@mrmped1
@mrmped1 5 жыл бұрын
If you look at the pictures of that you showed of the push rod hitting the tube. The alignment is off compared to the other push rods. I haven't worked on VW since the late 70s and early 80s but if I remember, the rockers were slightly different on some of the other engines. They look identical except the measurements are slightly different, you might want to measure the rockers to make sure that they are all identical. That push rod should go down the center of the tube when the valve is partially open and its already against the side of the tube before it even moves.

The reason the chromoly pushrods we're hitting the push rod tubes is due to the fact that the Rockers are aftermarket 1.25 ratio as opposed to the stock 1.1 ratio.

this replica of Chamonix made in Brazil was the reproduction of the Porsche Spyder 550, a model of competition of great success, manufactured in small quantity by the German mark between 1954 and 1956. Designed by Chuck Beck, the replica had plastic body reinforced with fiber of glass, tubular chassis and mechanical Volkswagen (suspensions, steering, four-gear box and 1600 air-cooled engine with 54 hp). As in the original Porsche, the engine was mounted between axles, behind the seats and in an inverted position; the front brakes were disc. Like standard items, leather seats and removable top. The Spyder 550 with the VW boxer engine (always 0 km) remained in production for over 20 years, but with electronic injection and 65 hp. From the outset, Chamonix has been exporting its main focus - initially to the USA and Japan - which has forced it to focus on the quality of the project and, in particular, on the details and finishes of its vehicles. The excellent quality of the body was favored by the company's (hand laid up) glass laminating process, which ensures greater regularity in the molding, without surface undulations and variations of thickness, providing lower weight and better dimensional control of the parts. The international recognition of the brand would arrive in the 90's, when the Spyder 550 was named by the German magazine auto motor und sport and the North American Road & Track as the best replica of the category in the world.

I've liked this car for so many years, and every now and then I consider it, except, her head sticks above the windshield line by about 6 in, and I don't know how tall she is but I'm 6'2! Any guy, or anybody over 5'8 probably would just look stupid driving it! But it's a great car I'd love to borrow one for the day!

@@HeidiandFranny ....the rocker arm is too short on the pushrod side (no idea how that could be) causing the rod to touch the tube. A very odd problem, unless the rocker arm got swapped by mistake sometime in the past. It also looks like the rod is not seated central into the rocker but the adjacent one looks the same. Would love to find out. Keep up the great work. Love from Rome.

Well, this turned out to be a nice series of videos! All very interesting to fellow car nuts! I would suggest to the owner that having a good-working set of carburetors will require swapping those Dellorto carbs for Webers. I doubt the Dellortos will ever run right... Nice job on the video series!

Great video in a great series. Very informative. The car sounds great too. I guessed at a gear linkage issue when you mentioned it shifted badly. Glad you got that fixed. Still wondering about the oil leak at the pushrod tube. Is the pushrod ever so slightly bend? And are the pushrods and tubes correct for this engine?
@HeidiandFranny

The rod seems straight... All of them are close to the inside of the tube and several of the tubes have rub marks on them. I can't think that is "right". It is more about the high-lift cam I think and the stock rockers. Seems like it could be better...

Frannie, I love Doug Demuro and TheSmokingTire, but even though they have more than one hundred times the subscribers and have been presenting for a long time, a lot of the time their videography frankly is awful considering their wide audience and associated budgets. This video was the most beautifully shot car video from channel without a professional crew like motortrend that I can remember. I loved the camera angles! The sound quality on a car like this 550 with a loud exhaust and almost no windshield was excellent. I have been enjoying seeing this channel steadily improve. Best of luck! ~'75 911S Targa

Heidi and Franny's Garage What do you think of selling a turbo for a 550?
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, They are very different cars, but if you only really use your turbo occasionally for fun drives, then that might be a crossover. The Spyder is low and hard to see and has almost no safety equipment. Your Turbo is a modern car and can easily be used as a daily driver. Heidi really loves her Turbo as you can see :) It depends a lot on how you would use the cars I suppose... Franny

Dear Franny, riding the 914 in regular traffic was easy. I started having trouble when I wanted to race the car on the track. About evry fifth shift was a gnashing nightmare and I gave up racing the 914 despite the great weight distribution. Due to the mid-engine the shift linkage was incredibly long and hard to get right. Seems the 550 Spyder has the same issues. Nice when you get the linkage tightened up but always a nightmare when you´re on the track in traffic. At least this replica has a pushrod engine. Andreas

It does shift a lot better now, but it is still clunky. But, the 915 transaxle in the 3.2 Carrera can be fussy at times (especially 2nd gear).

The problem with the valve cover leak is the bail. That is not an original German bail. The aftermarket bails don't keep the proper tension. Seems like the gearing is too low. Seems like that gear box should have been built with a 3.88 R and P. Keep up the reviews. #GirlVWmechanic
@HeidiandFranny
@HeidiandFranny 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Monica, You are right; the Gearing was changed by the PO. I didn't catch the why, but maybe taller gears for a stronger engine? Not sure. I was more worried about getting it to actually select a gear ;) The bail was pretty tight. It was my bad for not prepping the seals properly. I sorted that and they are now dry. Have you worked on these CB Performance engines? I'm interested in your take on them - although this one is pretty old I think. F
@monica93304
@monica93304 5 жыл бұрын
@@HeidiandFranny CB Performance is THE industry leader. If the engine was built by Pat Downs ( Lead tech/builder) I'd be fine with the engine. But a 1915 cc engine wouldn't be something he would build personally. He usually builds 2 liter and up. He can build a bullet proof 2276. I've built engines with mostly CB products. Certain items still need to final prep.

Are the pushrods suppose to contact the tubes? What do you think of those steel pushrods... This engine actually had one different than the other four on the right side. Oh, I have to ask you about those nyloc nuts... They were on the heads and the case. I had not seen that before... How do you torque properly with them? I know a thousand questions ;) Thanks, F
@monica93304
@monica93304 5 жыл бұрын
@@HeidiandFranny Steel push rods are used on engines that are built with Chromoly steel head studs. The expansion rates are the same, so you adjust them at zero lash. I like building engines with SS windage style push rods tubes. The are wider, and you usually have better clearance.

The machine shop gave it an ok because it wasn't up to the spark plug hole. The said it is common on heads that have been bored out for those larger valves. The valves were replaced and the springs and keepers. This isn't a car that will ever see high mileage.
